I get a 10% off of the maintenance check up that the dealership recommends every so many miles, but is it really necessary? I mean, I am faithful about changing my oil, checking tires, and such, but the only other thing that they do is maybe change the spark plugs (which may not be necessary just yet) and flush some fluids. They charge so much money for those things, is it really necessary?

You didn't mention your current mileage but check a manual for the schedule. You can pretty much do everything yourself except perhaps the timing belt, depending on skill level. That item is critical.

Maintenance check up (exclude oil change) is free if you are still under warranty, right?

not here they arent. The typical maintinence schedules are thus:
every 3k change oil
every 6k rotate tires and change oil
15k, 45k etc... different dealerships put together different services. some include lubing the hinges a fuel induction service, air filter and oil change
then comes the 30k 60k 90k: these are the most expensive. the dealership I have here wanted $400.00 to 'test' drive the car 4 different times (called something different each time) change my spark plugs radiator fluid flush, and oil and air filter. I was like fuck that. Didnt even mention the timing belt.

At Nissan for $389 they change the spark plugs, oil change, air filter, rotate and balance all 4 tires, air induction service, fuel induction service, flush the fluids, lube the locks and hinges, check the rear brakes, service the front ones, wash your car and detail the engine for free. it goes on. I was thinking about having them do my car...but they cant get it on the lift.

No you dont need to do them, I did my 60k that mazda recommended myself. I thought it was BS that they wanted 400 bucks to do something that took me less then an afternoon and $30 to do.

I know it's pathetic, but only 11K miles on it and it's a 2001!!! (boom07)
