Hello all,
I just bought a MSP 03 (had to trade the 350Z in (bang) )
I am new to the boost scene all previous cars were N/A.
I have read through this forum for hours lpoking for insiteful info on boosting and all i got was the typical you can you can't. so i am going to make my questions simple and straight forward to try and avoid a lil flaming!!!
I want 8 psi I saw BMC and boost gauges and BOVs, now I want atmospheric BOV and no stall. I read the threads on stalls to but i am a computer guru not boost guru.
so i need a decent BOV at a decent price that releases to atmosphere a recommendation on guage or will any guage do and the same for a BCM..
3 short answers will do, (reading this forum makes me walk softly - lots of negetivity, im here to learn not fight)
noob question, what octane should i run at 8psi.
and once and for all, where do i place what- before or after so as to not stall?!?!?!?!
this is really all i want out of this car, not interested in racing yet got to get out of the 7000 neg equity on the Z first, Then when nissan fixes the suspension on the Z i will buy another one, but this car will do for now. God i miss RWD!!! and that extra 100 hp. don't miss the 622 dollar car payments though!!!!
Thanks alot for your patience. later,
-vin

First off; If anyone ever flames you, message me and they will be dealt with. Do NOT feel afraid to post here. That's so lame.
Anyway..
*Always* run the highest octane you can. This isn't as important with a naturally aspirated car but it's a HUGE thing for turbo'd cars. Lower octane = more chance of knock = more chance of detonation.
As far as BOV, you've really gotta read all of the BOV threads. There's a lot of info there and it takes a while to sort through it all but that also means there's a lot of member experiences in there.
As far as the MBC(manual boost controller), a simple JoePMBC (www.joepmbc.com) works for me and holds fine at 14psi. Not a bad deal for the $30-45 he charges. Some people say you can build one for less but think about the research and development that companies have when making products.. Then think about you putting together some random homedepot parts without that R&D. THEN think about putting that undeveloped controller on your car and blowing your engine.
Good times.
Anyway, again, feel free to post here no matter what. You may be told to search but that's because it's been covered before.

I am going to give you MY opinion, not saying this is perfectly safe, but from what I think, your engine should live through this:
8 psi would be fine, run highest octane in your area (hopefully 92 or higher)
The new dual piston Forge BOV would be a good one since it doesn't seem to make the car stall, mind you, it may stutter a little after dropping from high RPM straight down to idle. You can read about this BOV in the thread about in this section.
When I had my boost to 8.5(turned it down for winter) it was a blast. I put xylene in the tank to up the octane to ~97-98 and the car pulled great.
Good luck, and have fun.
edit: Welcome to the boards, most people are cool so don't be skeered.

im not Skeered or anything of the sort I am just tired of fighting over the internet. its GEEEEEEEEEE! im 26 and just tired of wasting my time reading throught it. That's all!!
thanks for the adcive but we forgot one thing! the boost guage. Are they all pretty much the same as far as what they do so Namebrand isn't important so much as with BOVs?
thnks again

I personally dislike Autometer gauges just due to my own thoughts about them. Plus the included materials leave something to be desired. With my Blitz gauge, everything you needed for install was included and it was all quality stuff. Plus I have a different gauge than the other 400+ MSPers here that have Autometer.
To me it's about being somewhat unique. If you like getting a gauge that matches the car's existing gauge lights, buy a Defi or Greddy. Cheaper is not always better.

I am not sure where you live but if it is cold enough there even at 8 psi you could hit fuel cut, so you may also want to think about a fcd. I have hit fuel cut at stock boost on an extremely cold day.

*Please Do Not Use A FCD* (Unless you *truly* know what you're doing or can afford a new engine at any time.)

the boost cut is there for a reason... leave it in place, that way you have a safety net.
as far as BOV is concerned its a matter of taste and experience. ive used the HKS and love it, i found it to be the best sounding and performing of all the others. it can be found for $190-200. same applies with guages, ive used the Defi link guages and love them as well... theyre a lil pricey but theyre extremely accurate and ive never heard of any failing. good luck

Thanks guys I think i have my list for just a lil more umph outa the car:
HKS SSQV BOV
defi or greddy guage
and Jobmbc
one question about the mbcs. I can go as low as 8 with these right, i hear of only 10 and all, just making sure!
Also i read the flash was bad for upping turbo but then i have read that the car is so rich it doesn't matter and i also read and heard that the cars ECU auto adjusts for mods?
which is true. I never plan on running 14 pis or even obove 10psi in this car, so should i get the flash, that hesitation in second is driving me nuts and i have only had the car for 140 miles!!! But i will deal with it if it saves my engine in the long run!
and im in MD and its been around 18 -40 here this winter, what a weird winter for MD! not normal by any means!

As far as the mbc question goes; if you have it as far open as you can get, it should go back to near stock level. I know mine did.
As far as the flash goes.. Let me be the first to say that boost is *VERY* addictive once you get a controller installed. I started out saying "8 is enough" and now I'm around 14.
I also recently swapped my flashed ECU with a nonflashed ECU so I could protect my engine a bit more. I never thought I'd be pushing 14psi, so I flashed...
You sound like you're already ready to put good money into the car. That's awesome. Just think about where you want that money to eventually end up. Do you want to look fast or go fast or a happy medium of both?

i am leaving the cars externals alone (sleeper) and i am not interested in drag racing, these cars are track cars even baha but not dragsters,
i want a reliable quick car even if that means spending a lil more but as of now it is my only car and i can't put it in for interna work, i need this car everyday. I want my Z back really and i want to make this car as close to it as i can without spending 4 grand. just a nice quick grocery getter!!!!!
FOR NOW, heheh later when i get my second car.... oh its on! Bigger turbo, big azz intercooler, internals galore and guages and meters to the heart content! but for now just a lil more quickness in its step!!!

Some people gave some real good info, here's my take.
The Autometer brand makes kick ass gauges, may companies and people who race use these gauges. The Defi ones are WAY cool as they are real back lit gauges but huge cash. My Autometer came with everything I needed to hook it up. ALL the brass fittings, huge amount of hose, extra light bulb condoms to change the color. The "red" cover matches our color perfectly.
One nice thing about the Forge set up is cost and the fact that it directly replaces our stock unit. Quick easy install without making holes in stock IC piping. I am in contact almost every day with Forge via email and they are releasing the kit soon.

Yeah, I don't mean to knock Autometer gauges at all. The one I played with when mspeedpro came over just didn't do it for me. But I'm also in Texas where just about every 4x4 truck you see has Autometer gauges and stickers and stuff..

I know about lil inexpensive cars beating the crap outta the Z, i have a friend with a o1 civic turbo'd and it was an eve race at his 5psi.
I just miss the power of 235 hp to the wheels. and i want atleast 200hp whp. Thats all i am saying

I see you getting addicted to boost just as I did. ;P Have fun and please take some time, if you dont already know, to just learn about about what *not* to do with a turbo'd engine.

That's cool. I really do like those Defi deals but man (hand) huge cash for something that shouldn't really need to be that much. I'd almost think about spending the coin on an EBC.
There also may be a reason you see so many out there. :D
ummm my new fog lights kick ass.

also i was thinking of getting a A/F gusge just to see what the hell is going on when the car hesitates, anyone else have a A/F guage?
t3ase
02-08-2004, 12:11 PM
According to the Forced Induction guys, the only accurate A/F type of gauge is the Greddy 60mm EGT. All others are so off they do no good.

Lemme say this again, no matter how stupid or newbie-ish you feel able a question, please ask it. We'd rather complain about having to answer the question again than read about a blown engine.
Good luck and since yer a geek, you can always reach me on AIM/MSN Messenger. You may also wanna fill out your profile in the user cp so we can know where you're at for meets and stuff.
