Ok, I hate myself for this already, but the search isn't working(for me at least) and I am sure this question has been asked before, but I'm just gonna put my question out there.

I finally have money saved for my first real mod. I am torn between an Injen CAI or one of the many downpipes out there.

From what I understand, I will get some kick ass sound from the Injen as well as a few more ponies; however I have hear that a downpipe offers great performance increase.

With the downpipe will there be any more turbo spooling sound than stock, or just a deeper note?

I heard the sound clips of the Injen and it was amazing, but I read that a downpipe will offer more hp.

If you were stock, which I'm sure some of you are, which would you pick?

P.S. please go easy on me ;)

I'd hands down go with a Short Ram Intake, and a 2.5" Downpipe with 1 high flow cat so you don't get a CEL. Emmissions will still be tough to pass, maybe not in Canada but in the US it should be tougher.
Who you buy from is your choice, or wait for more opinions.

Get the injen first, then save up some more and get the downpipe and cat back exhaust or a turbo back exhaust. Then up the boost a little. :)

Get the downpipe. More hp. As for the intake, before I had mine I just bought a cone filter. You take the stock box off throw the filter on and move the senser back. You will have to drill a small hole for the senser. Same sound almost.

intake. for me, i wouldn't want a bottleneck in the exhaust. can't beat the spooling sound either :D.

I am in the same boat as you. I am completely stock. I think i am going with the intake.

if you want a bigger performance gain, go with a downpipe.

Intake is cheaper...go with that first.

Just picked up my Injen intake yesterday and installed it into the wee hours of the night. The install was easy. It looks and sounds so neat. Already turning heads. I noticed a small increase in power too. SaWeeet!!

Also, being able to hear the whistling of the air being pulled into the cone filter really clued me in about how the turbo spins up and down in relation to how I give it gas, and knowing this can really help me increase the life of my turbo.

I say the Injen CAI is a worthy investment, Thus far at least. Oh, and it comes with a neat licence plate frame.

P.S. I haven't even hit 900 on the odo yet. I love my TSP (TurkeySpeed Protege).

IMO...I would get the downpipe first.

I'd probably get the intake first, then move on to a turbo back exhaust. That's my plan of action, at least.

Well, being the more moderate part of this board, I would say this...
Free up your exhaust and intake, and leave the rest for those who have more money than sense. When you start getting into major mods, you not only void your warranty, but you get to hear all the old crap..the other people who say "mazda sux", because they don't warranty the JOE MFC...MBC....whatever. "I want a down-pipe..how can Mazda be so down on me?" Well, here's a clue, dumbassas....YES, they will void your warranty for major mods. Should they do it? Anyrhing to do with engine itself..YES.
(my advice is this, and you can tell me to fuck-off, that's okay)
Leave it stock and be okay about it. It's a great car, and you should be proud to own one. If you're looking to kill someone from the light, this may not be the car for you.

Sorry for the rant, but this shit gets me a little too close to home. Ya'll have a good day!

get the intake for a SOUND and a downpipe for HP, whichever means more to you do first, personally i got the intake first cause i had no money to get both at the same time ....

Downpipe all the way! The car will sound a lot nicer and you'll actually gain HP as well.

stock intake isn't that much of a bottle as compared to the choke down and cats of the stock downpipe

intake will definitly affect the sound of ur car more than a downpipe, for that reason i went with injen, yes i know the reasoning is considered stupid from a lot of yall

Is the Injen guaranteed to bring out the turkey? Spending $200 on an intake vs $350+ on a DP would be nice if the HP gains are there, but I wouldn't want to spend another $100 on a problem created by a mod.

yes it will bring out the "turkey"

ive been debating the same thing for quite some time.. I just decided to do neither and get some motor mounts.. I was set on getting the apex DP, but I idecided that getting rid of both cats, and splicing into an O2 sensor wire, killing my warrenty, was not the best thing for me seeing as how my car is only half a year old.... but chances are, I'll be doing it this summer ha haha

yeah I would go with the Intake first then when you have loot for your next mod think about getting a full turbo back setup or downpipe and catback. That way you can enjoy the sound of your intake while you save up for exhaust and then you will be ready for the extra hp that the exhaust will give you plus not to mention the badass sounds you will get from a nice exhaust system. just my $.02

exhaust and intake are easy to install and unistall for warrenty issues so you dont have much to worry about.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I think I will go with the intake since it is cheaper and it sounds so good. I'll admit it, I would take the sound over the little extra power a downpipe will give me when compared to an intake, I just can't resist.

Thanks again,
Brandon

(rofl)

Didn't you know that they came out with LED's for the caps for your valve stems? Oh those net 1 hp a piece.

If anything at all I would do a downpipe

I went with the intake because it was the first bolt-on, won't kill your warranty mod that came out for the car. When I have the cash I'll get a full turbo back. And the intake on this car does help...the gains have been detailed over and over...10-15whp on dyno runs. And yes...it sounds great. The DP alone gets you right around that but costs more...that's why I'd personally suggest the injen.

I'd go with the downpipe, although the injen was my first mod. I have my downpipe and front mount sitting here in my room but haven't got a chance to put them on yet. Anyway I couldn't feel any difference from putting the intake on, only sound. But its your car so do what you want, who am I to tell you what to buy or not to buy.

Why are you acting so freakin' ignorant?!?! Here's a few things to ponder:

1. It's his car and he can do whatever he likes...just like you can to yours. We don't live in fucking communist China.

2. The intake will net at least 10whp which is noticable...the DP won't do much more than that. And if you plan on going with a full turbo back later the DP is a waste of money.

3. He's not buying an intake and expecting 30hp gains...he's expecting to free up turbo flow and spool faster. He's not putting stickers on his car and expecting gains. i fail to see how spending money on a legitimate engine modification classifies him as a ricer.

Just buy what works for you. The injen is cheaper and you seem to be leaning towards that than go for it.
