View Full Version : Foglight Covers (Gauging Intrest)

This is probably a lost cause, but I figured it might be worth a try. I, like many, am very interested in Sti style foglight covers for the P5, MP3, 03 MSP bumper (I suppose 03.5 MSP with moodification too). I did a search and found that while there have been many suggestions for this product in other threads, I couldn't find an actual list of how many would be interested in getting these produced. So, I am thinking it couldn't hurt to start a list and get some numbers to turn over to DG or other vendors so this product could get some serious consideration. I personally don't care if its FG, CF or urethane, they all can be painted. If there isn't much intrest I'm just going to go to the local custom bike shop and see if they can make me some in FG, but I figured hey it might be worth a shot to try on here.

lol. I doubt I'll use that exact phrasing, but thanks for the tip. I didn't know anyone had actually undertaken producing some.

I was going to start making some (both STi type styles, full cover and mesh cover) soon, and probably will anyways, no matter what DG decides. Most likely around or under $100.

This is a must have for anyone with painted black headlights IMO. I could PS it for you, but you should know by now that you always supply the pics when you ask. I wouldn't even know what to PS on there other than actual WRX fog covers.

the covers i'd like to see are the ones that have a bunch of holes so the light can still shine thru. my friend has them on his wrx so it looks like he has no fog lights. looks nice and stealthy

Yeah that sounds like one of the designs Dexter is talking about producing. I am really looking forward to seeing what he can come up with. It would be very cool for onr of our own members to produce a product that several members want and have asked for. Might make the vendors start listening to our suggestions a little more instead of just remaking the same products other vendors already produce. Ok, time to get off my soap box.

On a P5, MP3 or 03 MSP yes they should work with the Pilot fog kit. I have the pilot fogs in mine. I think I was the first one to put them in and I used the factory brackets. The stock lights are around 5.25" so they actually stick out farther. Of course it is hard to say what "they" will or won't work with since we don't have a finished product or prototype.

As for how they will connect, that's a good question. Honestly, I haven't been able to get close enough to an Sti to see how their's work. But, I figure where there's a will (or demand) a company could find a way.

ok, i have made some for my car, only they work with the bra only!, thers a few ways to mount them if you wanted to have them with no bra, but this requires drilling into the bumper, my has less 5000 miles on it, so keeping it clean and nice is important.. i used plexy, cheap, like $5 for an 2'x2' sheet and 1/4 inch thick.. but it breaks easly when trying to cut it..hasnt broke on the car and has taken some hella blows from rocks!! - mabey ill make a set to fit with no bra.. let me know you guys think!

I'm removing all of the "If the price is reasonable..." subtext. This thread is simply gauging intrest in this product to show DGM or any other vendor or member interested in making these for us how many potential customers they would have. Like any product price will be a defining factor. I am sure if anyone does decide to make these they will start a new GB thread where the price, pics and details will be listed. So, if you have intrest in this product go ahead and sign your name to the list, it by no means obligates you to purchase if a vendor/member produces the product and you aren't happy with the price or design.

I personally perfer the mesh type.

Actually I want to ask everyone who read this thread, which type of the above 3 covers do you guys prefer most?

Well, with the mesh ones you could actually use double sided tape or something to keep them on since they wouldn't be pulled on and off all the time. With the solid ones they would have to make a clip or something to retain them. I gotta get a look at an Sti to see how their's work.

hmmm yah, well the sti covers go with the flow of the body, i guess the area around the fogs were made for a cover. looking at our car, i dont think it was made to have a cover, if any at all. idk, im studying all night, so dont mind if i start a debate lol i have to stay up. i think cf fog light covers and cf headlight covers would be dope for a show though. gotta do some drawings later of this whole concept lol - chris

Yeah, I don't know. With a lip you're gonna run into the same problem that the 03.5s are gonna have. Of course with the lip you could actually incorporate that into the design as a place to anchor the bottom of the cover to. For the 03.5s they don't even need a cover if they want to run mesh. All they would need is to pull out the grill material put in the foglights that are available on the forum and then put the mesh material in front of the lights.

You're right the Sti's front clip, whether it was designed to or not, is better suited to the urethane covers, because they can clip over the opening instead of having fit inside of the opening. Oh well, if DGM can't come up with something I'm gonna see if midnight customs can whip something up out of FG.

Good luck on your studies.

I can see a mesh pattern looking very good! You guys have no vision, the lines are perfect!! Just get the STI line pattern outta your head and you can see.

vodapas77
02-11-2004, 01:33 PM
Actually it seems that most people are leaning towards mesh as their first choice. I see your vision and would be very happy if someone could make a mesh design along the same size and pattern of the "round eye" Sti. As for the Sti logo I think it would be the shit to have the JDM "MS" MazdaSpeed logo painted on in the same way. Probably just me though.

02-11-2004, 03:01 PM
Mesh would be cool, but I prefer the solid one, that's not on the STi. =) Just a nice, solid insert. Either that or the mesh would be fine with me, but I'd like a nice, sturdy way to mount it so a stray rock doesn't send one flying.

mrpopnfresh
02-11-2004, 05:40 PM
We might have to get so complicted as to have it mount from behind the foglight, where the bracket is. Maybe if you make brakets that go around the fog and connect to the fog light bracket, then have the fg or fg/mesh or whatever, clip or skrew into those brackets. I guess I'd have to draw it out.

I think it's awesome that forum members are going to make a product that has been ignored by the vendors, no matter how many times it's been requested. The more members who make them, all the better. Nothing wrong with a wide selection. Especially considering this particular product can be made so many different ways. I just wish I had the skills that you guys do.

Well here you go. This is a pic of the prototypes. They attach via brackets which mount to the fogs. The production versions will have the mounting screws recessed so everything is nice and flush. The frames will come to you in bare metal so you can have them color matched or chrome plated.

I've already made some casts of the foglight area (P5 not MSP) and will be sanding and cutting to get a design that I like so that I can make a mold. My plan is to make casts from urethane and leave it up to everyone else to paint. I can't think of any good way to attach them except with 3M tape (foglights are in the way). I want to keep the fogs in there so that some light can show through. However, all of this won't happen for at least another month, I have other projects higher on the priority list... ;)

Man,

I had completely forgotten about this thread. I ended up just replacing my foglights with the grills that were available on some of the Canadian P5s. For those of you looking for something more like the current Sti you could get the same grills and just fill the mesh with FG and sand it down smooth. That would take care of the mounting problem. Only drawback is they wouldn't actually be foglight covers then since you would have to remove the fogs. Just an idea.

I actually just went to the Mazda of Canada website and found the listing for dealerships in BC (since it's the closest to me). I then just called dealers until I found one that had them in stock. Unfortunately, they didn't ship them. But, I asked if anyone in the area could pick them up for me and ship them. Sure enough, Niv (of the Gemini Hood GB) was cool enough to pick them up and ship them to me. (Gotta love these forums.)

I'm sure your friend would have no problem finding a dealership in Toronto that could get them for him. That way shipping shouldn't be too bad at all.

B32E-50-C21 cover-L, lamp

these numbers are under protege5 MPS2 Susp. Option. And if you get this code 0000-86-C09 claiming that its a packaged thing then thats the wrong one.

woot? we can get the fog light covers here in CANADA?! you must be kidding me...
