JIC exhaust install

ok i just recieved my 505sus exhaust today from apexr1.com.... beautiful exhaust and apexr1 was great, quick delivery and all... i know its only 4 bolts to install the exhaust, but i have been reading up on it and some people have had fitment issues due to the fact that for some applications you need to use bolt "springs" in order to make sure the flanges dont get damaged because of the vibrations of the motor, urethane mounts, etc. i will be using kartboy urethane exhaust mounts and urethane motor mounts... any suggestions or a how to ???? i want to make sure i dont f up and do it right the first time.... thanks

I just used the stock "springs" that was on my stock exhaust. My JIC Magic has been on my car for almost a year. Great system. No reason why the stock bolt springs shouldn't work. Not sure about the urethane parts you have. Never used them.

ugh. I just installed my JIC exhaust and it's butting up against the bumper cut-out pretty hard. If I warm the car up, it'll melt my bumper FOR SURE.

Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe the name of some car that has longer hangers or a way to extend the stock P5 ones? Thanks in advance.

natey.. cut the cent of one of your rear exhaust hanger.. that will allow it to hang down a little more withouth swaying too much. i had to do this with one of my kartboy ones..

I tried it and it's still pressed up against the bumper pretty hard. It seems like the hangers that JIC welded into it are too low on the pipe and muffler, so the tip sits too high.

*bump* because I don't want to put my stock exhaust back on, and I sold my Mazdaspeed one. (dunno)

Before I bust out the torch, I'm gonna talk to Dave and/or Rishie. That second idea doesn't sound bad, though...Just deal with it once and for all so it'll never fit weird again.

when i got my racing beat, it said that if the exhaust hung too low or too high, you can actually adjust it at the connecting bolts. try tightening and loosening the bolts at the resonator and the axle part. a second set of hands would be most useful. hope this helps at all.

tonk: the joints don't make any difference at all, no matter how you bend them, the rubber exhaust hangers seem to be about 3/4 inch too short. It's not touching the bumper, it's pressing against it pretty hard, almost lifting it up a little bit.

Did Dave sell me an OBX catback with JIC badges onit? (j/k...sorta)

Natey, I had the exact same problem with my Corksport Powerseries. The exhaust tip was firmly pressed against the rear skirt and my Kartboy hangers have ZERO flexibility (kinda why I bought them!LOL) Anyways, my solution was to remove the axleback portion only and bend the hangers up into a very lazy "S" shape. This gave me the 1/2" of clearance that I needed and centered the tip in the skirt cut-out. My suggestion is to heat the hanger where you plan on bending it. I did not, and because the hangers are hollow, I slightly pinched tore one of them (I had a local shop re-weld it for me the next day). Hope this helps, Ryan

Thanks, you guys. :) I was just outside looking under any car I could find, and my buddy's F-250 has rubber hangers that are a little bit longer than our Protege ones. Tomorrow I'm gonna go to the junkyard and see if I can find some, then, once I figure out why that won't work(Natey's law), I'll probably go to the muffler shop and have them bent/repositioned.
Rishie told me not to bend them myself because the piping is pretty thin; it could tear if I wrench on it too hard.

Natey, sorry about the problems dude.....I have been there myself with my JIC. Mine was melting the heck out of the bumper cutout too. I bought mine from Rishie and called him about the problem - he had never heard of anything like that. So I took my car, with the problem exhaust to JIC / Ziel Motorsports in Downey, CA (not too far away from me luckily). They had never heard of any problems either. Uh huh, right. Anyways, they bent the hangers for me and made a new slightly larger cutout of the bumper exhaust slot as it was all melted to hell. Works fine now except for that now that the exhaust hangs lower, under extremely full loads in my car, the exhaust will vibrate from time to time against the underbody cross section metal suspension piece. This happens most often while I am in reverse. I am happy with the system now, except for when this vibration issue pops up. Hope this helps...

I think I have it figured out. I bought a universal exhaust hanger and chopped it in half. The exhaust now clears the bumper by about 3/8 of an inch. Tomorrow, I plan on making some kind of heat shield for my bumper. Here's a couple of pics of the hanger I bought.

Glad you figured something out...

The JIC sounds and looks pimp... glad i went custom, i have no fitment issues. mine sits about 3/16" off the bumper. i wanted it as close as possible without touching. the kartboy hangers help keep it from rattling.

hehe, so far so good. The only problem is, I'm too afraid to fire the car up for any amount of time because I've heard so many horror stories about melted bumpers. Tomorrow, I'll rig a heatshield and take it up Hwy9. I'll be able to honestly give my opinion then. I can say that it sounds WAY better than my Mazdaspeed exhaust did, and it sounded pretty good. The JIC makes a nice, low rumble with no buzziness at all...so far. (woowoo)
