I wouldn't think it would be worth it. Yes, you'd get more airflow if it's relocated to the front, but it's still too small for our turbos (the smaller a turbo is, the more heat it generates, which means a larger intercooler is required).

The stock IC is EXTREEMLY small, and a tube and fin setup to boot. It would really not be much more efficient in the bumper, compared to its current location.
Here is a pic of the stock IC, against an aftermarket IC./members/boostisgood/stockvwagner.jpg

I agree. I don't think it is so much the location of the intercooler, it's the fact that it is inefficient.
Even if it was mounted in the front it would still suffer from heatsoak. In the end, since custom work would be required anyway, you should find a more efficient intercooler from another car or an aftermarket one off ebay and then make the custom piping.

thanks good information here. i was looking at installation pics for wagnersport's version of the FMIC and it looks like it goes in front of the radiator. won't that hurt the engine cooling system?

Not at all. I have the IC in right now, and the car has not seen any raise in temps, since its been in. :D
