Brother just bought an evo thursday. Tired of getting my ass cracked . I bought a greddy profec b spec II boost control. I have heard that you can only run 9.5 lbs of boost before the car stalls. Just want to know what to do. I would also like any other opinions on how to make this car run 12's. Money is not a problem.

make it run 12s? first i would go to the dealer. they have this awesome mod called "trade in"
then you get a new car and its like WHOA.

If he got an EVO, your best bet to beat him is trade in your car for an EVO RS. :p
Honestly, that's probably the easiest, cheapest, & most reliable way to do it. Enjoy your MSP though. :D

Welcome fellow Houstonian!
You've got your work cut out for you if you want to see 12's. The car won't stall at 9.5+psi of boost but you might want to think about getting colder spark plugs, a FMIC and a turboback exhaust.
In no particular order, you'll need these to eat an EVO.
Colder Plugs
Front Mount Intercooler
3" Turboback Exhaust
Walbro Intank 255lph Fuel Pump or Peirperg Inline pump
Atleast 440cc fuel injectors
Lighter Flywheel
Stonger Clutch
Engine Management
Larger Turbo
New Forged Internals- If you want to be on the safe side
Misc. other things to keep the car in one piece
Tranny upgrades
Money's no problem right? :)

to run 12's you would need new internals, turbo, ems, fmic, and all the other mods to suport it all :p, and sliks

Buy an EVO or an STI, that'll probably be cheaper than upgrading your MSP to run 12's

Before the car *stalls*? I'm one of two people on here (that will admit to, anyway) running 15psi daily and the car is fine so far engine-wise. Now, clutchwise... :D
I'm not in ANY way saying this is safe. Don't get boost happy.

agreed. $19,000 front wheel drive MSP versus a $29,000 four wheel drive EVO? more work and more money than would ever be worth it in my mind.

I can understand that you could go buy a car off the lot and have it be fast, ie Evo. But there are some people out there, Me, that like doing things the hard way, even if the money it is going to cost could have been saved by doing something differently. There are a number of Evos and STIs out there already. MazdaSpeed Protege is not as know out in the Import World and I think by tuning a MSP you kinda set yourself apart from everyone else out there. Atleast that is what i am going for, plus I have a passion for Mazdas, can get away from them so buying something like an EVO or STI is out of the picture for me.

I agree completely. I love the fact that my car is rare. Yes, it gets annoying because of the lack of aftermarket support (few companies want to cater to such a small market base). And despite what everyone says, the MSP IS faster than *most* of the cars on the road today. And it is fairly easy to make the car even faster.
No matter how much money you spend, and how much you do to your car, there's always someone faster than you :)

I was riding around in my brother's Spicy Orange today and I agree our cars are so different from everything else (Especially the Orange) that it gives me a real sense of pride in ownership.
So if homeboy wants to dump a load into his MSP that's fine by me at least it will be unique.
I would bet a large number of "more money than brains" EVO owners could be beat by a decently modded MSP with a good driver. Not that it would be all too common but a few suprised looks might be in order.
chino

Why does everyone insist on doing this to the MSP? Comparing an MSP to an EVo or trying to make one as fast as an EVO is like comparing a new Thundebird to a Z06. Yes the are technically in the same class, yes they both represent competing manufacturers and yes they share similarites and even heritage. Can a Thunderbird take a C5? 99% of the time in 99% of the categories, NOT A CHANCE. HEAVILY HEAVILY HEAVILY HEAVILY HEAVILY Modded against a STOCK STOCK STOCK Z06. maybe.
Why even compare an MSP to an EVO? It's as pointless as the Tbird vs. Z06 comparison I just made if not worse.
Also keep in mind that I think that just maybe possibly there might be a slight chance that EVO owners are MODDING their cars.
Whats next should the MSP say ..... turn water into wine, perhaps die for your sins?
Next up, I try to mod my neighbors Dodge Stratus to hang with a Nascar. Stay Tuned for the Dyno results!!!!!!!

If you are REALLY into spending money,
Fuel Management (perfworks is making a Piggy Back)
Upgraded injectors
FMIC
Boost Controler
Downpipe (S pipe)
or Turbo Back Exhast (3 in)
Upgraded Clutch / tranny
flywheel
E bushings
Don't get the PCM Flash
T3/04
Forged Internals
Poly Motor Mounts
SRI/CAI of your choosing
Anything else I'm forgetting?

A multitude? really? A multitude? Where? The quarter mile thread has how many 13 second cars in it? Discreet just ran a 14.4 at the track.(Most agree with more traction he could be in the 13's) Is that a MULTITUDE? A car that has the POTENTIAL to run 13's doesn't count :D
Also quoting the EVo as running high 12s all the way to low 14s based on the driver is STUPID. I am sure Dumbasses in EVOs have managed to run 14's but pick a mean number and go with it. Nobody says " Car X runs anywhere from a 12.8 to a 14.2 Stock."

I think that with some time and some tuning, especially with the fuel system, that we can be contenders. Granted that our cars did not come with amazing speed like the Evo, I think that after a little while, since our cars are fairly new and the Evos and Subs have been around for a while that they have more information on how to tune them to the full potential. Just give us some time, some experience on tuning our cars to higher potential and i am sure that we will be competing with all the other top notch imports out there. Atleast that is what i feel, sure it might take some money, but it would be well worth it to me, plus the feeling of beating an Evo or Sti would be a big rush to me.
Matt
Sorry for the spelling error earlier, i meant to say love the mazdas, CANT get away from them. Just to clarify.

When you compare the performance of the EVO and the MSP, remember to incorporate the price of both cars. I got the MSP for $16350, compare that to the sticker of an EVO or STi. My opinion, the MSP was the route to go.

I'm telling you that there are a helluva lotta cars that can do it easier, cheaper and better.
the MSP was made to handle, not accelerate. The suspension is NOT designed to aid in drag racing. It was made to take turns...thats the opposite of drag.
The neon runs 13's stock and with the stage 2 upgrades through dodge I bet it runs 12's. You will have to invest so much time and money into your MSP to make it even keep up with an EVO. All the evo has to do is add an intake and he's smoked you again.
You need to learn to think things through before doing them.

Take your car and $15K to Perfworks and Andy Wanger.
You need a new turbo and all new plumbing, new intercooler, new exhuast, Standalone engine management, new axles, new transmission(none yet available), new clutch and flywheel, Forged internals(Pisons and Rods), engine mounts, upgraded suspension, larger and possibly more injectors.
That should get you started.

True, but the problem is we have all heard these statements of his about 4000 times now and not only is money an issue but none of the people that start on this quest have 1% of a clue what is invovled.
NOw if someone came on here and anounced they had an MSP with a budget and a plan of attack in mind, then we'd be a little more behind them. However that is not the case.

I haven't been there much as of late but the only problem I ever picked up on was the clutch noises that didn't seem to actualy be a mechanical problem. I am not a fan of them personaly but I won't deny it respect either.
THere is a women up here, shes on there boards. SRTGURL, she runs the times I mentioned before with those mods. She has very little done to it and that its made almost 100 passes down the track with no issues. No MSP will do that running those times...EVER!

The only reason that is a problem is you live in a climate that humans aren't made to live in.
Take your car and $15K to Perfworks and Andy Wanger.
I like the one stop shop idea.
The problem is regardless of what you do to get anywhere near 12's in this car will take away any daily driveability and reliability.

ok here is the final solution then we can all just walk away from this debacle:
Parameters: (1)MSP, $12,500 to spend, Don't want to open the motor.
Simple Pull the motor and cram the biggest thing you can find in there. I don't think anyone has talked Chevy Small Block Swap. Lets say use an LT4(those are fun). Your hood may not fit anymore and there MAY be some cutting involved. Then go buy a new tranny and a solid rear axle(I hear good things about Dana) Ok now you have a RWD. Just don't hook anything up to the front wheels(It'll be fine, I promise) Now go to Ligenfelter and tell them to put the Twin Turbo set up from the C4 Vette on your car. See if they will toss in a bottle of Nawwwz as well. Oh, also you are going to need stickers, lots and lots of stickers. Now we gotta get this power to the ground, go buy some Weld Racing Drag rims and some slicks. We broke your budget a little but that will get the job done. Sub 12 second MSP coming at ya!!!!!

Well I finally need to chime in after reading all of this. I am the brother of "evo..eater" and have seen it all... so to speak. I bought my 2nd civic in 1995. I started to see its potential from the now abundant magazines at Barnes and Noble. I was one of the first people here in Houston to mate a T28 to my B16. I loved being able to spank the mustangs and z28's around here because they never saw anything like it. I have to commend my bro for starting out like this. His MSP is quick, but not quick enough for him. I can't blame him. I would want my older brother wiping my ass all over the road either. I hope that he can get some usefull info on this site, and crack my ass one day. But as someone said on this post, I'll just put an intake on and take him out again. BTW, I am not a Mazda hater, I also have an 03 6 that my wife drives, but I think he should just buy an Evo and be done with it. If he doesn't, then I'll be the one turning the wrenches to get his car faster.
