i went in for service last wednesday(1-7-04), left it over night and and picked it up thrusday(1-8-04). the attched picture is what it looked like when i got it home. i have never been soo pissed about anything. i could not believe that they left the oil cap off. not to mention that oil is EVERYWHERE. and then when i called them and told them that i was a little less than statisfied with my my missing oil cap they offered to clean the engine bay and give me a new oil cap. i stated that i didnt want to drive any further without a cap and that they should deliver it to me, they said that the shop was closing in 10 minutes and that the mazdaspeed tech had already left for the evening. so the best they could do was leave a cap in the show room for me to pick up. i have not had bad expieriences with my dealer in the past and i hope that this was just a fluke.

That sucks.. any damage to the hood liner?
Might want to relocate your alarm siren. It would take less than 45 seconds for me to break your window, open the door, pop the hood, and cut the siren wires.

whoa, not cool at all. I'm surprised the mess is only that bad - If figured there'd be oil all F-ing over the place.:(
Best of luck getting it straightened out. Try to get some free stuff from the dealer - it's the LEAST they could do now.

my wife drove her car for 3k miles with no oil cap because the dealer forgot to put it back on after a "free" oil change.

Agreed, you should consider yourself kind of lucky. I had the exact same thing happen to me in my DSM, and I only drove it for like 2 miles before I smelled burning oil. I popped the hood and it looked like an oil bomb went off, it lost 2 quarts:eek:. Needless to say, there was oil absolutely everywhere, and I never took any car to have someone else change my oil.
That still sucks bad though man, hope they get it cleaned up good for you.

well the thing is that the buring oil smell has gone away and i have an oil cap. however, oil is still all over my baby. but i left for school before the service department opened back up. so if i wanted them to clean it up for me it would be about a 4 hour trip. so im thinking that some "simple green" cleaner would do the trick... ive heard good things from members in the past. let me know what yall think.

You should be able to clean it pretty easily yourself, Simple Green is pretty good at cleaning up grease and oil.
I'd make sure your dealer has documented their foolishness in case you ever encounter a problem where they try to claim you didn't check your oil and ran too low.

Guys,
Just had the same thing happen to my P5.
Drove it home, went to an automotive shop to pick up some K&N filter cleaner, popped the hood, and no oil cap! I only drove 10 miles with it. There was a bit of spray around the air intake but I didn't lose any oil.
Did this do any damage to my engine??

lol, I hear you can find anything on the internet, ya know.
Anyway, sorry to hear that. The pic isn't loading for me, but I'm sure I'd be mad as hell at the dealership. Hope you can get it cleaned up.

The oil that would come out of the valve cover isn't under pressure at that point. That's why you won't lose much oil. You would have to drive around for a really really long time to lose any substantial amount of oil. The only damage that would be caused is if something fell in the valve cover.
