welcome to the club.
I'm at my 3rd windshield and its got 2 cracks on it. First 2 where warranty covered since no "rock" impact was apparent... this last one won't so i'm trying to last it as long as i can.. 1 crack has made it all the way from 1 side to the other thank you cold weather.

Good luck....many people have had similar problems and the dealer wouldn't replace it under warranty because of the chip.

yeah my last crack formed right after the rock hit.. instantly... couldn't even go fix the rock chip since there was a 6" crack already. I guess its a design flaw that mazda won't admit to.. i've had 843204932 rocks hit my old 323 and never did the windshield even crack.
Good luck tough!... it depends alot on the dealer, my 2nd windshield there was a small small small rock chip visible but they changed it anyhow.. dunno if they were nice or they didn't see it?

talk to your insurance co. down here in florida we have the florida rock law- insurance replaces your windshield free of charge if the crack was caused by a rock on a roadway.
worth a shot.

It's a combination of the cheap glass that Mazda uses and mostly the extra firm suspension and rigid chassis of the MSP and MP3. My 2000 ES had the exact same glass and got hit with plenty of stones but never cracked. It's a fact of life that the firmer things are with the car, the more risk there is for windshield cracks.

I say its because of the Clunk.
Have you clunked today? :)

Yeah, I had the same problem with my glass. I got hit by a rock on the way into work, nothing right away. 8 hours later when I returned to my car there was an 18" crack that grew steadily over the next few days. I had to have it replaced by insurance and the new glass goes in this Friday.
Fact of life with these cars.

Yeah.. I'm on my third piece of glass as well.. lol
It's a special piece.. diff from regular proteges... thicker I imagine... but still... guess the forces on the windshield from the car is really just that strong...
crazy... on a fun note... bang on your glass w/ your fist.. it's fun watching it grow... lol.

nah the suspension firm idea is bs cus my 240sx was riding on 10k/8k hks full coilover suspension....nuttin stiffer then that besides race cars :) and it had rock chips 10 times as large as this tiny ass thing...at this point i dont think it was hit by a rock....i dont remeber hearing any rock hit it and thats just bs how it grew cus it was 10 min that i noticed it....how the hell a long as crack like that grow in 10 min? im 100 % sure at this point that some how the pressure on the windshield caused it to crack.....ill have pics today...im tellin u the lil chip i found could not of caused it.....but we will see....im sur enot payin 260 bucks for something as dumb as this

Mine had a little tiny rock hit it and I got a 9" crack from it. Didn't even see the rock, just saw the crack start. You'll be able to get one for $230 or less. The only thing you might want to check on is the molding. The company that did my windshield used a generic molding. It looks like crap compared to stock.
I guess the new one is better, some bird shit hit it and put 3 chips in it. No crack though.

I had this problem...little tiny rock or something hit the windshield and caused a huge crack that prolly wouldn't have happened in a good piece of glass. Anyways, took it to the dealer because I heard the protege windshield is prone to stress cracks, but the dealer pointed out a microscopic 'star' that marked where it was hit. So I had to buy a new one...but it seems better than the original piece of glass, because a few little rocks have hit it and no big frickin cracks....
could be the cold. cold weather will make the cracks shoot across yer glass as it tries to expand and compress.
i'm on my second windshield, should be the third, and it's got several cracks already ranging from 2" to 14".
edit:
also, check the ins. company first. the sooner you report it the better off you'll be. they covered my first windshield replacement, and they'll cover the rest of em if i have anything to say about it, and my monthly payment hasn't changed.

same thing happened to me the day I got my car, its generally covered by insurance, and the fluctuations of the air sealed inside your car all day are responsible for the crack's growth

i have heard if your windshield gets hit any where in the black outlined areas of the edge then you will get a crack. I have 3 that all hit the black and one chip that hit in the center of the windshield no crack
black=crack!!!!!

lots of people have encountered the horribly weak Mazda glass. When I replaced my windshield I got aftermarket non dealer glass. It holds a lot better. My Wife's mp3 has a chip in it for almost one and a half years now and hasn't cracked. My car had one chip in it, and the crack spread 6" within an hour.

Same thing here also. I was driving up to Big Bear. I drove way behind the car I was folowing cause I know about the gravel. I got to the top of the mountain and saw nothing. The next morning I walked out and saw a good about 14" crack. Kinda sux. There goes my exhaust I wanted to buy....

That's good to know since I've already been nailed once on the A pillar & hit again by a smaller rock on the windshield. FL highways are scary...we had that one person get a metal rod through the windshield a few years back here in Ft. Lauderdale.

i owned my 03.5 MSP for TWO DAYS before i drove by a dump truck and a fricken rock shattered my windshield!
o well....insurance covered it and plus the cops got the guy to pay for it too, caz my friend happened to look back and get the MOFO's plates:D
the MSP is cursed. i'm on my second winshield as well. my first was broken by someone with a brick around 2 in the morning. i was like wtf. it cost me about 100-150 to replace it. cant really remember. now on my second winshield. i was driving home from work when a stupid rock hit my winshield and cracked it. at first it was around 2 inches long and now its all across my winshield. i'm going to ride on this winshield until it falls out. fuck that. i'm tired of this car.

I just posted a thread about this eairler this week. Its warranty if there are now chips. It sounds like a stress crack. Just like my MSP

Mine cracked halfway across and then came back... Just picked it up from mazda today. They said it was Mazda Glass but it doesent look like the same stuff that came with my MSP...There is different etching and stuff. Im kinda pissed because they wouldent put my VIN ID etching on the new glass.

i just got a crack in my winshield last night. there was a minor spec i mean you cant even see it that hit the top part of my passenger side glass and it spread about a foot now. i took it to the dealership and of course they are denying any warranty work. so i have to shell out 100 dollars for my deductible to get a new winshield. i am very pist off right now. crappy ass glass!!

Same thing happened to me(im also on my 2nd, needing a third windsheild now). I was going to get my exhaust installed, and a mtorcycle cop kicked up a rock as he cut in front of me. Instantly got to be about 4 inches long. By the time I got to Auto R&D, it doubled in size. My insurance company said they would only replace it if it were less than the length of a dollar bill. I had never heard that before, but it was that long before I even got off the freeway.

was it geico?
They told me the same thing, I've been measuring that damn crack of mine with a dollar bill every day, but now it's about 1" longer than it
I guess if it's smaller it can be repaired, any larger and it needs replaced. Glass dude is coming to my house tomorrow so I'll see how that goes.
That and I got pegged for going 61 in a 35 the week before..... I'm screwed.
I no likey my pro anymore. I wasn't going 61, i was going 42, but my car had the look i guess.
Fuck it. Whatever...
Good luck with your shitty glass guys
