After I gave my car her first wash, I got bored and decided to use my old AEM CAI piping and filter from my old 2001 Civic to make a dumb lil custom intake to keep me happy untill I order a real one. All I did was cut about a 3-4 inch section of the top pipe off (the part that had a hole drilled for the O2 sensor) and attached it to the big black box with the wires going to it. The I attched the O2 sensor and stuck the filter on the end of the small pipe. So basically I have a cone filter sitting where the stock airbox usually is. Think I may have lossed a little bit of power...not 100% sure though..the butt dyno isn't always correct. However the engine noise and turbo spooling up are twice as loud now. As is that crazy turkey sound. Pretty neat in my mind, and free. Only problem is on my test run, after about 10 minutes of driving the car felt like it was about to die on me while waiting at a light. The RPM's went very low, very quickly, so I gave it a little fuel to save it. It only did it once. Any thoughts?

The reason it feels like your car is going to die is because the fan is blowing hot air directly into the filter; that is also why you noticed that you lost a little power.

Ok thanks. I think I'll go out there real quick and rig up some kind of a heatshield.

I made a custom heat shield:

Since when does the intake have an O2 sensor?

Another reason your car may be trying to die could be caused by a leak at your recirculating valve.

My bad buddy, I know thats not the correct term used to describe the sensor, thats just what I refered to it as. Tomorow after work I'm just going to use the rest of the piping to construct a true cold air intake.

Update: Went ahead and relovated that coolent bottle (I guess thats what it is) to make room for a pipe that goes stright down from where the stock airbox would be. Now I have a true cold air intake. The filter sits right behind an opening on the underside of the car that is cut out. Looks like it should get a nice healthy flow of fresh air from there. From my first run it feels much better, and everything is much louder. I'm getting attached to the turkey now...
