I dropped something off at Mazda R&D today for a friend, and it's right around the corner from my work. Pulled up, parked the car. And noticed that a Mazdaspeed Miata in Titanium was sitting out front with 3 other cars. The s2000, mr2 spyder, and BMW Z4. I was fixing something in my trunk, and heard someone yell "Spicy". I turned around, and it was a man by the name of Scot, who works there. I had met him at Sevenstock earlier, so I knew who he was, but he knew about me beforehand from the forums. Anyway, he proceeded to tell me how they were comparison testing the 4 cars, and how well the Mazdaspeed Miata did, and how dissapointed they were with the s2000. The colors available for the Mazdaspeed Miata will be red, and titanium. And the titanium looked beautiful. The Mazdaspeed Miata I saw had leather interior, but he told me that cloth will be an option for the car. I also noticed it had chrome/brushed rings around the guagues.. So i dont think that Dave B will be needing to come out with any for that car. lol. All and all, i was very impressed how it looked. Maybe I can swing by at lunch sometime, meet up with him take it for a test drive, and post some pictures. Well.. I can hope can't I?:D

Miatas always came w/ chrome around the speedometer and tach for as long as i can remember, that's why i wanted chrome rings for the Protege5 since the day i bought the protege. thank DaveB for that.

Those pictures are badass. There was a company offering to do full hardtop conversions at one point in the mid 90's. They still around?

man, if that roadster coupe sure looks sexy.
again steph, stop making me cry !!!!!! :'(
actually today i was reading the latest issue of autoweek and according to them, mazda is going to make a coupe edition of the miata. total of 122lbs greater than the roadster, but its structural ridgidity is supposed to be much better.

I think that article was talking about the next generation Miata. Which if you saw the concept in Automobile this month it's kinda .......well its no miata IMO
what's the date on that autoweek ? i just got mine today for dec. 22, 2003. i couldn't find an article on a miata.

I still don't like the stock hp and torque numbers on it compared to the Mazdaspeed Protege. They could have done a lot more!
MSP: (Pre-Flash) 170hp 160tq
MSM: 178hp 166tq
Mazdaspeed Miata is boosting 7.8 psi stock, the MSP is 6.9 stock.
I posted a thread last weekend about how I thought the numbers on this car were not all that great and people started posting threads saying "more than your car", "weighs 2100lbs"...blah, ...blah.
Fact of the matter is...take a Mazdaspeed Protege (post-flash), boost it up to 7.8 psi....sorry, gonna get more than 178hp and 166tq.
Not to mention that the Mazdaspeed Miata does not weigh 2100lbs, it weighs 2529lbs, 2948lbs w/ac. MSP 2843lbs, the Mazdaspeed Miata w/o ac is not that much lighter.
This is solely my opinion on the car... and for those couple of people who said i didn't have the numbers on the car...there they are, straight from Mazda's website, on both cars.
sorry, ive been away for a few days and forgot all about my post in this thread.
it actually wasn't in autoweek. it was in automobile. the issue with the new bmw 6 on the cover. sorry, my bad

This car will blow away an MSP at 10lbs boost.

well...yeah! better turbo, intercooler...HOPEFULLY won't have the hesitation issue...
It's going to be a mean ass little car, especially once people start doing mods and increasing the boost! I think they could have really cranked it out for sales purposes though.

You're telling me that a/c adds 419 pounds to the weight of the Miata ?
That can't be right.
Are you sure that wasn't for an automatic or something ?
Is there an automatic offerred for the Miata, i've never seen one.
Not flaming you, just asking that's all.
SaaBaaDoo
12-24-2003, 11:42 AM
that's what the .pdf said??? Doubt there is an auto offered. 419lbs for a/c does sound high though!
hahaha i think the weight that he posted must've been the gross weight w/ the maximum amount of people in it weighing 150 lbs. each and shit in the trunk. a miata will never weigh more than an MSP. even if the numbers may seem insignificant, it's got RWD (more traction than a MSP), lighter, and a stronger gearbox. go figure. even if the MSP was boosting 7.8 psi, it wouldn't make a very big difference over the MSM

2,387 Lbs curb weight. Please don't spread rumors when you dont know what you're talking about.
SaaBaaDoo

binary...I'm not spreading rumors, got the numbers straight off mazda's site for both car. And for not knowing what I'm talking about, how about you look up the numbers for the right fucking car. This is what I am talking about, I post numbers from the Manufacturer and people like you come along and post a gvw from a 1991 miata... :wtf:
SaaBaaDoo
12-26-2003, 01:45 AM
2948lbs gfvw w/ac, so yeah, full vehicle weight.
trust me. a miata will never weigh more than what a protege will. protege has 2 extra doors, a larger trunk, larger body frame.
edit: he got the numbers for a 2001 miata. not much of a big difference from this year model'a
where's the page u got the number from saabaadoo ?
SaaBaaDoo

jflo- sorry for the confusion on those numbers...that higher number is a full vehicle weight. I got the numbers from here. http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/flash/upcoming/MXS/download/mazdaspeedMiataSpecs.pdf
Not sure if the link will work, if not go here http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayPage.action?pageParameter=upcomingMazdaspee dMiata and click on the "specs" tab.

I agree, it's not much of a difference in the car since 1991, but everyone always tells me to get my facts straight and it kind of pisses me off when someone tells me that, then shoots me numbers from a 1991 miata. If we were...in fact talking about the 91 miata, then there would be no "Mazdaspeed" name on it.
I am not arguing that the Miata is going to weigh more than the Protege, someone flamed me about it being only 2100 lbs, so I posted the correct gvw.
also, my whole damn argument here is that Mazda could have given the car a lot higher numbers on the hp and torque than what they did.
I never said that the MSM was going to be slow by any means, and yeah it probably will beat an MSP....but none of us know just by how much until somebody races one head to head, not just on the 1/4 mile, but on a road course as well. So really, nobody has the right to say it will "smoke" an MSP or the MSP will "smoke" a MSM until 2 people actually run them.
All I have is the facts on the weight from Mazda on both cars, and I can't even post that without people making smart ass comments and telling me that I don't know what I am talking about. It's no wonder why people are starting to leave these forums.....

Thats a 2001 Miata in the link. No difference in weight between, the 2001 and MS Miata except for the turbocharger and various small components. What more do you want? 180 hp in a 2300 lb car. Look at a Lotus Elise, low weight, low HP, high performance.
SaaBaaDoo

I want you to quit telling me to get my facts straight! And all I ever said is that it would have looked better with higher numbers. If I could afford the Lotus Elise...I'd have one over my MSP anyday!

NP, not trying to start a flame war here.
GVWR is the amount of weight of the car with the max number of people...full tank of gas, all the stuff, including weight inside the trunk. if i (180 lbs) were to step into a MSM, i doubt it would weigh nearly 2900 lbs.

I have a 1991 Miata and it's much lighter than the new ones (especially Canadian spec with no airbags until 1993 I believe). All that extra safety stuff like side door impact beams, etc. add weight. The 1994 and newer models, however, have the 1.8 litre which more than makes up for the difference though!
