I was thinking of getting a roof rack so I looked at the Thule one that my Mazda dealership sells...They want $220.00 CAD for it. Is that a good price or should I look somewhere else?

Run a search. There's a few threads on this topic.

$220 ain't bad, but I paid $180 in Calgary. I would stick to $200...no more. http://www3.telus.net/dd90210/Dion/MP5/YON%20TYM%20cypress%20gif%20image.gif

It's a dealership - do you think they will bargain??

They will. Like you said: "they are a dealership." You didn't pay MSRP for car did you. It's there business to deal. If they don't budge then don't buy from them. Go to another dealer. (If you can.) We have a million over here on the Mainland.

$220 is about what you would pay for a thule rack anywhere you go.find out what that $220 includes because there are lots of atachments and thats where it gets expansive but thule or yakama are great racks.

Unfortunately there is only ONE dealership in Victoria...and after our beloved BC Ferries just came back from being on strike I don't want to risk going over to the mainland. They might walk off the job again! I might check up island though.

Hey Aftershock63.....I read in another thread going on, that Canadian P5's are a little differenct than US ones....I will check to see if the roof rack is the same.

I paid about $220.....If you'd buy an aftermarket thule rack that would clip in the doors youd probably pay more.

You can also fit yakima accesories on it.

I'm a little confused....the P5's I see running around town have really nice looking roof racks - kind of streamlined...But the one offered on my dealership's website looks kind of blocky...Maybe the P5s I see with roof racks are older P5's.

maybe they are US models? They have a stremlined look.

Since you do not have a factory rack, I think your options are a little different than someone who does. They might be selling you the 4 "towers" that hook to your car and then the cross bars will mount to those. These do have a different appearance. To see MANY pictures of a factory roof rack with Yakima setup provided by Mazda, go to this past thread. I just searched on "bike rack" since I am also interested in one for may factory rack:

http://www.msprotege.com/vbb225/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24747&highlight=bike+rack

I know I saw someone in this forum with the Thule setup on the factory rack too and they take a different approach (perhaps a tad more sturdy, but I like the Yakima look better for our factory rack.

I'm a little biased......................but get a YAKIMA!

Very nice indeed! I don't those big strips going down the length of my car....just little black gutter type strips. Looks like 4 places to secure the rack to.

The problem with aftermarket racks is that they have clips that attach in the door opening..the mazda rack bolts right on the roof. Trust me get the mazda (thule) rack as seen in the first pic.

True, mine bolt directly to the car. I would highly recommend getting the Mazda ones also. I had the regular attachments from THULE on my car and they scratched the roof. With the Mazda ones you wouldn't have that problem.

You are right about them..I have the same ones and they are solid as hell! I have my bike up there and it doesn't move at all. Whats neat is they can be taken off in 5 minutes, and they don't scratch the car.

Hey guys.

Brandon, which Thule bars do you have on? V2's? or Velo Vise? I want the V2's, but the Thule website does not recommend them.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help. Hey Jak-O, I don't know what 'V2's' are. Mine are the load bars from Mazda. Like it was said before, they fit the car perfectly. No rubbage...nothing.

Sorry Brandon.

I should have been a little more clear...

I have the factory load bars, I was actually referring to your bike racks....the nice looking silver ones.

Thanks

Oh,...now it's clear. The bike 'trays' are also THULE. The whole system is THULE. I picked up the trays 10 years ago. I know that they still make them. I just looked at their website and yes, they are the Velo Vise trays. The Fairing is the Medium 871 also, just in case you want to know. BTW, I painted the trays silver then put a blue strip on them down the middle.

Hey RedWagon, why did you get the Yakima system, when the bike trays can just attach to the factory cross bars?

redwagon02
12-17-2003, 12:41 PM
Well, a couple of reasons. First, I got my car in May of 2001 and nothing was available to use the OEM roof racks and use a fork mount tray. Second, The yakima set up was from a previous car, other than buying new trays (steelheads) and a new fairing.

myk are those mudgaurds i see? where did you get them?

90210brandon
12-17-2003, 09:55 PM
And Myk, where are your 'bumper marker lights'?

Myk
12-19-2003, 10:17 AM
I took the marker lights out because I really hate the orange, so either I get celica, or neon or whatever side markers and make them fit, or fill the holes in and get the bumper painted, or make little air scoops...then I just gave up and started working on the fornt grill. No its winter and I put the side markers back in.

Yeah, I got big red mudders, with a silver plate on the bottom that says "MAZDA."

I got them from a guy on the Toronto board, who had a bunch for sale. He got them from e-bay, (and yes he's all out.)

If I'm not mistaken a Thule or Yakima system will run at least $300. The only reason I got a Thule is that it was used for $100, or I would have gotten the dealership one.

BUT, do standard square bar attachments fit on the Mazda rack. The reason I ask is beacuse ROCKYMOUNT has fork mount long trays for only $99 CDN.

Does the dealership have fork mount bike trays? How much?

Does the dealership have fork mount bike trays? How much? YES standard square bar attachments DO fit on the Mazda rack. The Canadian Mazda rack was designed by THULE, so anything THULE fits. I doubt the dealership has long trays for sale.

Then I would get the dealer Mazda lock-in cross bars instead of a new rack system, Thule and Yakima cross bars, clips and towers are too expensive.

I have the thule rack system that myk has on his car with a different fairwing though. I am looking to get rid of it if anyone wants a rack. I used it on my ES sedan for a short time period and it has been in my basement since I got my PR5.

The rack was great and fit well on the sedan and wound on the canadian PR5's without the roof rack.

Can get pics of it if anyone wants to see.

Look at the attachment that Myk attached above. It is the same rack without the bike trays and has a different fairwing. Will get pics tomorrow for you.
