looking for general info on aftermarket exhausts? visit the sister thread for a comprehensive exhaust faq: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110722&highlight=exhaust+faq

umm...well, i guess this thread is in need of new links. great......someone else wanna take over and start a new thread?

**PRICES ARE NOW LISTED, PLEASE READ BELOW FIRST**
Ok, so I finally had time to go through and list the approximate prices for the exhausts. Here's how the prices work. I did NOT list prices on anything custom because I have no idea how much people were charged for the custom work. Custom work prices vary greatly so if you go custom, shop around! Any prices that are listed are approximate prices only and in no way guarantee that you'll find the exhaust for that price. It might be cheaper, it might be more expensive. If a website is listed, that's where I took the price from and is probably the only place where you'll find the exhaust. If you see "shop around", do exactly that. You'll never know what kind of price you might find. I simply took a price from a random website. You might find a place that has a sale, or that is simply priced lower than others. So please please please shop around!! I cannot emphasize that enough. And finally, all prices listed are for the exhaust section only; any mention of an added midpipe, etc. is not included in the price, nor is shipping or tax.

If you have any questions, feel free to send me a pm :)

CURRENT LIST AS OF 03/20/06 11:32 PM CST

How much space do all of the current clips take up?

Striker187
11-02-2004, 10:20 PM
jersey - approx. 60 MB. that's not including mazdaspeed75's clip. i completely missed that one. i'll have to add that one to the list when i get the chance.

fai - i'll try. but i think i'll only list the prices for some of them, namely the ones that are available only through a vendor (i.e. iON, Perrin, **********, etc.) since these will probably be the only accurate prices i can get. all the custom ones, the prices can vary greatly depending on which shop you go to so i see no point in posting prices for custom exhausts. don't plan on seeing an update for the next two weeks though. i have a chemical plant design project due the 15th so i won't be doing anything else except that.

Hi all, I am totally new to this forum and driving a humble 1.6L 2001 protege.
I intend to change my stock exhaust. Can anyone advise wats the size best for my car?

Stock
Current header piping size= 1.5"
Current down pipe size= 1.3"

I understand that too big will affect performance instead, so came here to seek advise.

Turbotech?? Who where and how can I get in touch with them. Those are some kickass #'s.

How much is that exhaust? We should try and set this thread up like the SMIC&FMIC info thread. Info much more accessible.

it depends on how much hp you plan on going for. there's a lot of info in that same thread, i'm sure you saw it. 2.5" is fine...it'll support up to about 300-350 whp. 3" is purely preference at low boost levels.

yeah the files probabl expired cause no one's downloaded them in a while. i'll try to re-upload them tomorrow night. and yes, the ghl dp can be made to fit the catback. mine was made to fit my custom catback actually. cullen at ********** was kind enough to have them put on 6 inches of extra piping and threw in 2 flanges and a gasket so all my guy had to do was cut and weld two flanges on.

Let me rephrase, it starts at 70mph and continues from there on up. I swear our cars were born needing a 6th gear.

orng1
02-03-2006, 01:26 AM
yeah everyone feels like you about that missing gear, but I don't know what everyone complains about. Do you have no resonator or something. I love the way my car sounds and it should be the same as everyone elses, a little loud but deep not to anoying (however you spell that) and mean when you get on it. custom 3" with a resonator and 3" hks hy power.

bingo. a resonator will help cut down on the droning. it may give a slightly more mellow tone too.

mmmm....possibly. though doubtful that you would have burned through that much packing. is there packing inside a resonator even? i'm not really sure. but even then, with two resonators, it should be pretty quiet. are you sure it's not an exhaust leak? has the sound level gotten progressively louder or has it always been loud? the greddy seemed pretty loud from the soundclip i heard.

copied straight from #3
"I measured the stock piping at several places, including the crushed sections at the bends. Here’s what I found. These are inner diameter measurements:

1 11/16 inches - 2 3/8 inches = 1.6875" - 2.375" = 42.8625 mm - 60.325 mm" - me :)

incidentally, if you wanna try to keep the stock look, you might want to look into something like a magnaflow universal oval muffler and then welding on a muffler tip that looks similar to the stock one.

Stock - I took out the S/J (Corksport) & the midpipe (MAM catless) and bolted up to the stock from there.

I'm pretty sure I'm leaking at one of the joints - if I'm sitting still I can smell some fumes faintly.

And it's VERY raspy. Like, the dominant sound is that nasty asthmatic wheeze on acceleration.

Hm so this weekend I jacked 'er up and tightedned everything down.
I have one nut on the Spipe to the turbo that isn't very tight b/c it's freakin impossible to get at and I def still am leaking.

are people getting new gaskets for all those joints when they swap these pieces out? I reused my originals. Those are the other two things I can think to do right now - find someone to tighten down that last $@^@$#^ nut to the turbo outlet & replace the gaskets?

Striker187
05-22-2006, 04:12 PM
generally it's a good idea to use new gaskets but i think you should be ok with your stock ones. i wouldn't worry too much about the nut on the s-pipe. there's one actually missing on mine cause the stud sheared off inside the housing.

two other things you might want to check: make sure none of the piping has a crack someplace. the other thing, check your exhaust turbine on the opposite side of the s-pipe. there's one bolt there right by the cartridge.....that one actually fell out on me. not a clue how it came loose. but it happened shortly after my s-pipe was replaced. can you kind of hear where the leak is?

chwood
05-22-2006, 04:36 PM
I'm not sure which joint it is b/c they are all so close in there, but it's def coming from that S/J pipe/turbo area. I've listened with hood up but not from underneath the car yet. I can't seem to reach the pedal while I'm under there. Drat.

I did get under the car and check for cracks but nothing was visible - and they were without visible cracks when I put them on.

I need to get under there again to silicone spray my bushings - it groans so loud my wife thought we had run over something. LOL

Striker187

chwood
05-25-2006, 10:34 AM
not yet - hopefully this weekend.
What about obtaining new gaskets for the s/j pipe? dealer? (ugh.)
I figure I try those two things - if that doesn't work then I'm going to have to slap the stock midpipe back on there and take it to the dealer.
