Im going to buy an exhaust for my car next year but im not sure what i need to buy for what i want.
First: I want the most HP i can get
Second: i dont want any CEL
THird: I want to be able to pass inspections
Fourth: im unflashed and plan to boost at 9psi
Fifth: im going to drop my car
SO what do i need? a turbo back ,Cat back or what?
oh yea and last thing..If you have a cat back and buy a downpipe later do you then have a turbo back exhaust?

cat back if you want to pass inspection, the turbo back will usually take out your cats (which will fail you)
but a turbo back will give you the most hp (mainly because it removes the cats which are the most restrictive parts)
you may get a CEL with the turboback it depends, you can get rid of it with an MIL eliminator

and yes, if you buy a catback and then a down pipe and midpipe you will have the equivilant of a turbo back (basicly if you replace all your piping)

The best compromise( for your specific requests/needs) I have found might be the new exhaust Billet is doing; 3" pipe all the way from the downpipe.
This would give you good gains, and since it's just one piece/product all the way back AND mounts to the stock downpipe you can swap in the stock exhaust when inspection rolls around. The CEL is easy to fix.
Other wise just do a catback and leave it at that.

a real turbo back also replaces or up pipe/s-pipe/cast elbow that is connected to ur turbo, the "downpipe" conects to the above up pipe and then ur cat back exhuast is the last part......as stated above once u lose the cats ur offically bad to nature and to emissions :)

altering the emission devices is considered illegal. Most of the times it's not a problem as long as you have at least 1 high flow cat.
1 dealer told me that removing the cats will void the warranty. I know that's not possible so I asked why and they could not tell me why.
