View Full Version : Anyone interested in an exhaust like this?
InsidiousMSP

Just gauging interest. The exhaust is 3" from the downpipe, no cats, your choice of muffler (I recommend the HKS carbon-ti :)), full 304 stainless steel (not pictured). Incredibly clean, deep exhaust note.
$739 - Full 3" exhaust (no cats) from the downpipe w/ N1 style muffler
Option: +$50 for HKS replica muffler (carbon fiber/titanium)
Option: +$200 for real HKS Carbon-Titanium Muffler
Option: +$100 for Highflow Cat
+Shipping
Check Page 6 for Muffler Options!

I'd be interested depending on gains etc. Are there any clearance issues? Terry from spool told me the reason they didn't go with 3" was because there was no way to do it without having any serious issues with clearance.

hmm i dont notice any clearance issues with that exhuast or anything with the routing of a possible 3in exhuast, maybe he was talkin about the turbo elbow part?? the one before the dp starts...there ull have to get a step up type elbow so u can meet the possible dp at 3in.....
whats the price gonna be ??

lol a mid-pipe or dp can be confusing, im assuming this system starts at the turbo elbow or "mid pipe" and replaces the stock catback and stock "down-pipe" which has the two cats......double checkin that this is correct.....
boostisgood
12-08-2003, 01:36 PM
PEople, the HP gains will vary, from car to car. For several reasons.
1. location-the air temp, and elevation will cause variances with the gains.
2.mods-if you have a totally stock car, and add this exhauyst, you will see minimal gains. with a boost controller, and intake, you will see a higher gain.
hope that helps. :D

WOW, I know there are several boosted MP3s & P5s, but I didn't know of anyone with a boosted sedan.
Where did you get the downpipe then? All I know of are Protosport, Apex, & iON, but I thought they were all 2.XX.

it came with my turbo.... all the pipes where fabricated there... guess mine just came with a downpipe also
InsidiousMSP
12-08-2003, 01:49 PM
This product bolts up to the stock downpipe (not the elbow off the turbo). You can't fit a pipe on that elbow bigger than ~2.25" because of the bolt studs. Any 3" downpipe you see for sale that bolts up to that elbow has a ~3/4" flare. Replacing the downpipe itself will yield minimal gains.
AutoBox
12-08-2003, 01:52 PM
yeh, im talkin with a fabricator to get a larger elbow made up to work with a 3in dp......i would think replacing the stock dp would offer alot of gain, since the two cats are on it.....

In stock form, the cat assembly is seperate from the downpipe. However, fabricators usually combine the two as one piece.

Damn, oh well, I'd still like to hear what it sounds like.
Thanks
Wow. Talk about timing.
But of course, I'm a bit confused -- and if I repeat anyone else's questions that were worded in a different form, my bad. I'm still learnin' over here.
So this is supposed to be a downpipe-back system, correct? It's supposed to hook to your stock downpipe and yay, good to go.
Now here is where I ask my stupid questions.
Our stock downpipe has two cats, does it not? .. I have yet to crawl around under my MSP and look -- frickin' snow won't STOP -- but I believe that's correct. And so, if this exhaust supposedly hooks right up to our stock downpipe -- which I'm assuming has the two cats, mm-hmm -- where the hell did the two cats go in those pictures of this exhaust?
Or do you have an aftermarket downpipe on your MSP, Insidious? And I missed that somewhere, maybe -- and that's why I'm not seeing the two cats?
And if it's 'recommended' that one buys an aftermarket downpipe for this exhaust -- because yes, those two cats are evil and eat power -- what available downpipes DO work with this exhaust?
.. So, yeah. The cats are a bit of a concern for me as I have to worry about passing frickin' emissions. Damn things.
And of course, like everyone else has been sayin' -- videos and sound clips and a price, please! :D

thanks insidiousmsp that cleared up everything for me.....basically all thats left is that lil "dp" and the elbow to the turbo right? not bad if its priced right, im on board, although many places charge 600 for just a cat back so i may end up still gettin mine custom made, but post prices asap :) thanks again
Aha! It all makes sense now! :D
I'd definitely be interested in something like this -- depending on pricing and whatnot, though. Same story as most everyone else.
Thanks again for the clarification!

No, I'm not sure where that picture came from or what downpipe it is. The Billet Design system has no cats. Even if there were a high-flow cat, you wouldn't pass emissions.

It's actually a "downpipe-back" system. There are no cats. :) In the future, Billet Design may make a 3" downpipe that includes the s-shaped elbow.

up those links you sent for the pics of the exhaust were no pics of an exhaust....
.. OooOoOooOooh.
I'd love more info on the pricing with the hi-flow cat, as soon as you get get it, Insidious. But, then again .. if you don't believe the hi-flow cat would allow me to pass emissions, I guess it doesn't really matter, does it? Heh.
Or maybe, considering that you have the v-band couplings instead of the annoying flanges .. would that cut down on uninstall/install time, probably? If so, I guess I could always cheat and just throw the stock exhaust back on when it came to emissions time. Maybe. Overall, though, I'd rather just drop the money on an exhaust that I can keep on there without having to rip it off once a year.
And is that price you quoted subject to change? .. I don't exactly have that much $$$ on me right now -- I'm a poor college student, blech -- so it'd take some time for me t'gather it up. Basically, if I ask you about this exhaust a few months down the line -- is it still going to be available, and is the price going to remain the same?

Insidious -- or anyone that knows, really -- would you mind just giving me a quick blurb about how each of those different mufflers essentially effects the exhaust sytem? The mufflers are basically the same. All are 3" inlet. All will have the same performance & probably the same sound. You're basically paying for the HKS name with the "real" carbon-Ti. I think it looks the best though. Both the replica & HKS have real carbon fiber shells & real titanium tips, but you actually get a removable silencer with the cheaper carbon-ti replica.
As for the highflow cat, I doubt you will pass emissions. However, the car will be quieter and smell less like fuel. :)

are there going to be any before and after dyno runs?
is there going to be a production of a down-pipe/s-pipe in the future?
thanks,
erick

No before & after, but I will be dynoing my car next month (hopefully) to do tuning when I get the e-manage on.
Yes, there's a possibility of a downpipe/s-pipe combo. In it's current forum though, honestly I think it's fine.

do you have any ball park idea about gains with this exhaust?

No idea on numbers. But for comparison, my car is just as fast now with the exhaust at only 6.5psi, as it was without the exhaust at 12psi (based on runs with friends). You can see what my 1/4 mile was without the exhaust in my sig. Can't wait to see how it does at 10psi (sold my FCD, thought I would have the e-manage by now (hand))

any break in price for the first five people that get in on this?

also, this price is for SS, right?

It's all SS & I doubt there will be a price break because this is already a great price. The HKS Carbon Ti muffler alone usually sells for hundreds of $s.

yeah, but it never hurts to ask, right....
.. Is there a 'deadline', so to speak, on when the first five people have to commit by? I'm really interested in this, but I seriously doubt I'll have $800 together within the next month or so with the Holidays bashing on my budget.
Just thought I'd ask.

No current aftermarket downpipe will fit this exhaust.

Again, the stock downpipe is very small. Our system bolts up to the 2-bolt flange.

I'm interested in this is there a way to do away with the muffler completly and just go with a nice Tip? Also how much would shipping be (est) to 08817? Also would the Kartboy Exhaust hangers work ok with your exhaust system? And lastly when are you accepting deposits and what is the amount? Feel free to pm me if necessary.
Thanks

How about some pix of the WHOLE underside of the car w/ the exhaust. Esp. where it connects to the DP. I have looked through this whole thread and not many of the pix that u have posted so far are working for me, neither are ur sound clips, but I got those in another thread and they sound great! I would like to see some more pix!!! what size is the inside diameter of the stock DP that connects to the "S" pipe? Trying to decide on ur exhaust, or a Apex DP @ 3" connected to the "S" pipe... 1 more question, what is the wait time for ur exhaust if I was to order this week? Thanx...
