Tell them it's still just a Protege if they try to jack up the price and say it's special. Don't pay more than $19k.

500 college Graduate cash too if that applies to you! Autobox is right. Don't let them get you thinking that the rebate effects their end. They get it back! You should pay about 19500- 20500 BEFORE REBATES

California right? There are plenty of people on here who could tell you better than me, but I think the general concensus was that they are pricey over there. Good luck & make sure you thoroughly inspect everything on the car before you take possession

Also try to remember that the MSP is a car designed for the twisties, not for speed. Too many people complaining that MSP's are slow.
They neglect the fact that they can approach most turns above double the posted safe speed limits.

Inspect EVERYTHING! The car I was going to get had some places on the rubber sealing around the windshield that were turned over. So instead, I got my #1699 with only 8 miles instead of 32. The only problem was the jackasses forgot to take the transfer tape off the Racing Beat sticker on the rear sway.

Not the BEST article I have seen but good none the less.
Best advice I can give. If it sounds like hes scamming you, HE IS, WALK OUT. It's not rude or improper to bail if you feel uncomfortable. You are under NO obligation!

Know what my dealer did, or didn't do. They left 3 of the battery caps/plugs off. I drove around for 100+ miles before I popped the hood and saw it. Also, make sure the alarm works properly. It's been a month and the parts are almost in.
We went to the fleet manager at a few stealerships. The worst deal we were offered was Invoice minus rebate, minus college grad discount, + TTL. The best was a little off invoice, minus, minus, plus.

Don't pay more than $200 over invoice, less rebates. The rebate is $2,500, plus $500 recent college grad if you qualify. Invoice is $19,550 (including freight- check edmunds.com) or something like that. That means you shouldn't pay more than $17,250 or so (less another $500 if the college rebate applies).
Your best bet is to search mazdausa.com to see which dealers have the car/color you want. Then, call each and ask for their best price. Some dealers won't give you a price. Tell those ones no thanks.
Of the ones that quote a price, call guy who gave you the 2nd lowest price and ask him to beat the lowest. He probably will. Then call the first guy back and ask him to beat that. He probably will too. Congrats, you've more than likely gotten a good price at this point.
