View Full Version : Newbie Cheap Mod idea

OK, I'm a newbie, and have never really worked on cars, so excuse my ignorance in advance, but...
I had this idea the other day. OK...the air intake is designed to suck in air then allow it to pass through the filter into the engine, right?
Now, as I understand it, more airflow = good. People get CAI's and stuff to increase airflow. I got my K&N panel filter to increase airflow.
Now...the idea i had was to increase airflow using the stock airbox. Is there a way to modify the stock airbox or that stupid Callaway plastic tube thingie to increase airflow? Like attach a high flow computer case fan to the end of it? The only reason why I thought of a computer case fan is that a computer case fan's diameter is similar in size to that plastic piece, and I've got this super high flow [like 90CFM] computer case fan sitting here. I know that this fan runs off of 12V DC and draws 9.1W of power. I would guess that a car's battery could be rigged to power one.
Am I just a crazy newbie? Any insults, derisive comments, observations, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

YOU CRAZY NEWBIE!!!!
some people drill holes in the bottom, butdoing anything to your stock box really wont do anything significant at all. Shell out the damn money! car mods are expensive, get used to it! :D
electric "turbo" stuff is a waste of time. dont bother.
if you wanna go faster get a mbc and turn it up. :P
A fan will hurt airflow actualy.

Hmmm at speeds of even just 30 Mph I think air is moving into the Airbox faster and with more force than a case fan would move it in the first place. So the air is essentially rushing by the moving fan.

i hacked off the entire bottom of the airboox, then reattaches it and put in a k&n filter. Now my turbo has all the air it needs, until i go with a real intake. Some heat does go in from the fans positioning though, but at high speeds it doesnt seem to make a difference.

^........especially with a turbo

I'm cheap, what can I say? *grin*
Did I mention that it's a SUPER high-flow case fan? *laugh*
Anyway, an EBC is on my list of mods to get...when warranty's up. *shrug*. I have a feeling that my dealer would be a real prick about mods, so I've just left it be.
I had to beg and plead for them to even look at the damn TSB for the flash. I still need to get the clunk fixed, too.
BTW, I've gone through the main clunk thread...did I miss the TSB number somewhere?

the newest bushing's are the e-series.
Think about it... the compressor blades in your turbo are spinning at up to 150,000 rpm... a high-performance case fan makes 2,200 rpm tops... put that inbetween your turbo and fresh air and you're just restricting airflow. Dropping in a K&N or a SRI is your best bet for fairly inexpensive intake improvement.
As for warranty, as long as you're not taking your car in for engine work then it shouldn't matter. They have to be able to prove your mods caused whatever problem you go in for, so if your bushings are out, I don't think they're going to care whether you have a MBC or not. 'sides, from what folks have said around here those typically aren't too difficult to remove before taking it in.

threadjack?
Yeah I need to get my clunk fixed but I am going to take out the MBC when I bring it in. I know they are going to drive the car and it will be pretty easy to tell it's in there especially with a boost guage right in their face.

In this riced up world we live in gauges don't mean Mod per se. so If the MBC is not in there than there is not much for the dealer to say.

That is all you need to do- hack the stock box and get a K&N panel filter. The price of the CAI isn't worth it compared to the minimal gains. You could easily accomplish the same or damn close to it for next to nothing.

i did this back in february and i have had nothing but good to say about it so far. Loud woosh, more performance, etc. The only thing is dealships tend to be anuses about it, but if there ever is a problem and they try and blame it on that, ill just ask them to prove it.:D

Really? I can't believe they would say something about that. I brought my car in with a K&N, broken MAF that I fried designing the FCD and a ton of crap hooked up everywhere- gauges, volt meter, etc. and when the tech pulled the codes from the ECU he just shook his head and said- "I am getting about 5 different codes (from me playing with the FCD :) )- can you just tell me what is broke and I will change it" :). He didn't give a damn- just didn't want to spend hours chasing problems that weren't there.
