I got my ugly steelies with my Pirelli tires on my MSP while back in Philly over Thanksgiving .. and it's a good thing I did. Woke up this morning t'head to class at PSU .. to about two inches of snow. Then came out of lab to see another inch had fallen.
And so, I figured I might as well take advantage. Took my MSP to a big empty parking lot to see what funky ways I could get my car to spin or slide with the Pirelli's.
I gotta say, for being a 'sport snow tire' .. the Pirelli's are excellent. Not even a hiccup while stopping -- unless, of course, I was going fast enough where I knew stopping solidly was obviously beyond reason. There were a few slips while trying to get going now and then -- but nothing extreme. Even while spinning the car around -- gotta love donuts! -- they stopped the car short a lot of the time. Very grippy. Very responsive in the snow.
As far as dry performance, they're obviously no Potenza's. They don't have as much grip when you first stomp on the gas -- I got a few spins and chirps. And they squeal around corners when the Potenza's would be silent. But they DO hold. Just not as easily as the Potenza's do. But that's to be expected.
All in all, though -- I think the Pirelli's are excellent. So for those of you still wondering over winter tires .. there's my vote.
And if anyone can think of anymore 'tests' they'd want to have tried on a set of Pirelli's .. it's supposed to snow again most of this weekend. So let me know, and I'll head back out to that parking lot and try whatever! .. Well, as long as it's not purposely runnin' my MSP at 90mph towards a brick wall and then slammin' on the brakes to see if the tires catch. :p
