I can get regular oil changes for free. But would have to pay for the Synthetic. But I want the best protection since I will be stuck with this car for a long time.(NOT a bad thing.) What would you guys do?

regular oil is fine........ synethetic maybe a BIT better, not worth the cost IMO. you could save more money by being nice to your car.

Dino oil for the first 5k miles, then synthetic exclusively. First 5k miles lets all the parts wear in and polish each other really well, then the synthetic eliminates a lot of wear, especially at startup when cold and under hard running when hot.

There. That's my 2 cents. :)

Can you just pay the difference between the synthetic and normal oil costs and then have the oil change? If so, I'd go for that option as it will lengthen the life of your car especially because you plan to keep it for a long time.

MOBIL 1 (5w 30) every 5,000 miles.

Oh - on topic - if you can get the oil change free and pay the difference, I'd go synthetic every 5k.

If you get the oil changes for free with no mileage interval specified, get dino oil every 3k.

OR... get dino oil at 3k, then synthetic and go 5k, then dino 3k, etc.

perhaps this is not true, but I thought that once you went synthetic it was recommended that you not go back to dino oil. that's why it was such a hard choice for me to go synthetic; because I see how many miles I rack up on cars and that's a lot of oil changes (bling)

any ideas on whether you can or cannot switch back and forth?

edit: mobil1 5w30 every 5k with a Bosch filter for me

edit No 2: why is this in the Mazdaspeed section?

can't go back and forth...you can only go to synthetic once and then it's synth all the way. Studies have shown it's actually dtrimental to go back to dino, i believe.

I heard that same myth but I've gone back and forth between syth and regular in the past and never had any problems. What problem could it possibly cause?

It's a myth. Done it myself and seen it done... we have one truck at work that had synthetic oil for about 50K miles, then back to dino, the odometer reads 175K now. And this is HARD miles, our guys beat the living shit out of our trucks.

As for preferences... I like synthetic oil for turbo engines, higher resistance to heat, and more stable viscosity. For non turbo engines I always use dino oil and change at 3000 miles or less.

For regular driving I don't see why your free dino oil change at frequent intervals wouldn't be just as good as paying for synthetic oil changes at longer intervals.

If you change your oil frequently and it's free, I'd just save the money and use your "synthetic oil" money to buy something else. Dino oil doesn't lubricate as well as synthetic, but unless you are racing your car.... I don't see why you absolutely need to waste that extra money to go synthetic.

If I had free oil change at regular intervals, I wouldn't be using synthetic today, IMO.

Yea I could change it every 1500 miles if I wanted for free.

Also I dont think that I would go 5000 even with synthetic due to how small the filter is.

I got made fun of big time by my dad as he changed my oil for the first time.

Dad quote "Geezus christ my damn harleys have bigger filters then those."

Me "Sorry man Japanese stuff."

Dad "Kids and there damn Japanese stuff."

Me "Well Japanese girlfriend and car too. :), both ride better and are more reliable then domestics."

Dad

Sorry just reinactment.

not meaning to be an ass or anything, but it's Japanese, not Jap...that's a derogatory term for us Japanese.
