Hey,

I have a 2000 Protege 1.8L LX here in Canada (ES in the U.S)
My ignition Coil went at 63,000KM
I just talked to a friend and hers went at 60,000 on her 1999 1.8LX

Is this a known issue? Anyone encounter this?
Cheers

The coil pack in my '99 CDN LX went at about 30,000km so maybe there is something wrong with them. It was replaced under warranty so I have nothing to complain about.

I received a recall notice from Mazda about a week ago to have the ignition coil replaced. The recall was for 1999-2000 Protege with the 1.8L engine. Symtoms described in the recall were anything from a slight stumble in the idle to sudden jerking resulting in the check engine light coming on. I had my car at the dealer twice for a stumble in the idle (still under warranty) and they told me it was my air conditioner cycling on and off. My car is in today for the fix!

if you're having idling/starting/ignition problems with your 99-00 1.8L Proteges, do not hesitate and go straight to your local Mazda dealer and ask them to check your VIN to see if your Protege is part of the ignition coil recall campaign.

Yes this is now a known issue (hence the recall). It ONLY affects the 1.8L engine Proteges. If you have a 1.6 or the 2.0 this recall has no effect on you :)
