Hi my son's 323 in Oz is 1993 and I think 1.5l
Will this motor be damaged if the timing belt breaks or is it
'non-interference ' motor
He's a struggling student and trying to extend the belt a few months
Thanks

i dont know if this will help but the proteges on this forum have a different motor i think. most are a 2.0 fz that was found in the old ford probes. a few guys do have a 323 as well however. im not a great sorce of info in this area but my word of advice is to simply ask a local mazda dealers service department about it. if need be replace the belt as it will need to be replaced sooner or later and could save alot down the road, good luck :)

if he has been easy on the car i wouldnt worry much. its not like after xxx,xxx miles the belt will immediately go either. just take it easy :)

Thanks for the replies- my son is at uni and not a 'car-head' unlike his Dad!!
I'll have to call a Tech in OZ to sort it out.
Its a 1.6L SOHC motor ( 1993)
Thanks for your time

The 1.6L SOHC is, indeed, a non-interference engine.

Thanks for the post- very timely as I was just sending an email to Aust- to calm my son's nerves!!
theMAN also confirmend it was a non-interference motor.
It sure is an amazing era we live in when we can ship info around the world- sure helps level the playing field
Thanks

Hey now! I have a 3rd gen! ;)
Does my Miata with a B-series motor (B6E) disqualify me from that statement? lol

It's a first gen "protege" or 7th gen familia, non-interference.
My timing belt lasted more than 90,000 miles, while the maintenance interval is 60,000 miles. good luck.

Oh yeah, 90,000 miles is about 145,000km,
60,000miles is about 96,000km.
There was no damage to the motor when the belt snapped.
