On your 5 speed, you shouldn't be able to go from 5th straight into Reverse. I was able too, which is bad, especially when you go to down shift, with out even trying, grind reverse. I had been to a previous dealership several times over a rattle, and the service manager there told me it was nothing but me. I found in the manual (yes, I RTFMed) that I was right, went to another dealership, cause was pissed at the other one. They found the problem, no car for a week, the fork was broken, and sitting on the magnet in the bottom of the transmisson.
They are replacing all my gears for me, and Mazda got me a rental (crappy cavalier, whole dash shakes while driving, would rather be back in my noen).
So if you can go into reverse straight from 5th, even with the car off, take the car in, new gears are awaiting you!!

They replaced ALL the gears for you?
I'm able to shift from 5th to reverse as well, but I never really thought it to be a problem. I've never actually done it at highway speeds though (and don't plan on ever doing it either)

Yup, because they don't know the cause, they are taking precautions..
It's in your manual that is says you shouldn't be able to go from 5th straight into reverse..
Go get it fixed, some new gears maybe in your future..

I don't care what car you drive you should not be able to go from 5th to reverse when the car is running down the road. I hope you take the repair sheet to the original dealership you went to and show them where to stick it.

Let me get this straight, PeaB0dy.
Did you ACTUALLY shift all the way into reverse while downshifting from 5th? Or were you looking for 4th and grinded a little trying to (accidently) go into reverse and then pull back out of gear?

I was trying to down shift, but it would just slip into reverse, grinding..
I am usually doing 100+kph in 5th, going into reverse (if I could actually get it in.) would be deadly...
I would pull out of 5th, to leave it to fall to centre position, but sometimes it would slide down a little..

Ok then. That's exactly what happens to me sometimes.
Any chance that you can post a copy of the work that was done so that I can show to my dealer when they try and give me the "Oh...that's normal for this car" crap?

I always love that.... "Its normal, If it gets worse come back." and "well its not doing it right now and everything seems ok, bring it back if you have any problems." I hate dealership mechanics.

There is a lock mechanism that is supposed to prevent this from happening. Roll down the windows and turn off your car. When you shift from neutral to 5 you should hear a loud click. This is supposed to be the mechanism that is preventing you from now going into reverse. If you go into reverse, without even letting the clutch out, while you're on the freeway, you are kind of fucked.

To tell you the truth, I have a hard time getting my car into reverse when I want it to, especialy in the morning. lol. Supposivly that (what I said happens to me) is normal, but your car sliding into reverse is not at all. Grinding gears is one of the worst sounds in the world. I remember the first time I did it in my Stealth, I was like "WTF was that!!!?" Anyway, good to know. How many miles do you have on your car? Just wondering if it starts to do it after a certint point...

Happened sice day one, and I called the origial dealshit up several times about it, they said I was wrong..
So one day when I bring it back (for the 5th time) to repair the rattle in my back door, I was sitting in a miata, glancing through the manual, and I see this thing, a protection device to prevent going from 5th to reverse, and the previous time I was there the service manager said it was just synchronization thing, where the gear was off a little, and that is why the protege and miata in the dealership showroom would not go straight from 5th to reverse.
I was gonna chew him out, but lucky for him, he wasn't there.. I was really pissed, cayuse they got the wrong part it too, and I was there4 like 5 times.
I took it to another dealership, with in ten minutes, they agreed that there was a problem, and that they would repair it, no problem..

Well, I guess I'll be bringing this up while getting my alignment done. Thanks for the info.
BTW, PeaB0dy, I'm not sure if you read my other post where I asked if you're able to post a pic or scan your printouts of the work that the dealer did. If you can, it would be appreciated.

hey would this happen if the car wasn't moving? i'm not willing to try this 5th to reverse thing while the car is moving.... or is the lock mechanism only supposed to work when the car is in motion?
I say this because I've had some trouble with the gears lately.... what happens is that sometimes when I do the diagonal shifts either up or down I would almost slip into the gear next to the one I want to goto, but this didn't happen when I first got the car.... so i dunno if something is wrong or i suck at shifting ... i've been driving stick on this car for 2 years now...

You shouldn't be able to go to reverse from 5th even if the car is off..
So car moving or not, it should never happen..
