Auto Meter Air/Fuel Ratio Gauge install for the MAZDASPEED PROTÉGÉ

Disclaimer: The usual crap: If you screw up, it’s not my fault. This is here just to offer a good resource.

~What you need~

-soldering iron+ necessary accessories(i. e. solder!)
-spade or bullet connectors
-crimper/wire stripper/cutter combo tool
-some @18 awg wire

~Procedure~

1. Disconnect Negative Terminal of battery. Not really necessary, just a precaution.
2. fit gauge in panel/pod and run wires down below the dash as seen here:

3. Attach male spade/bullet connectors to ends of the red, purple, and black wires.
4. Attach your 12V power source-you have two options here
a. A lot of people like to attach it to a switched source. If you want to do this, attach it to the blue wire behind the ignition switch cylinder, as shown here.

b. ^ that is not really necessary, although some people swear you have to do it. The reality is, if the gauge does not receive a signal from the O2 sensor(via the purple wire), it shuts down. So I just hooked it to the battery as shown here. Any constant 12V or switched 12V source will do just fine.

5. run the purple wire through the firewall. If you are going to take your 12V and ground through the firewall, you need to run them through at a good place as well. I chose to run it through a plug right above and to the left of the steering column. Couldn't get a good pic of it though. sry.
6. Attach the black wire to a good ground. This is important. A good place is underneath the kickpanel, or you can attach it here, as I did. *note* in this picture, there are two wires running to the bolt. This is because I ran the ground for both the boost gauge and the A/F gauge to the same place. You will only have one wire connected there.

7. SOLDER some of the wire you brought with you (not included in the gauge kit) to the pink/blue wire after the connector (the opposite side that the O2 sensor is on). Solder it to the O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold, not the one after the turbo!! I did that the first time, it just doesn’t work.

8. Now just connect the purple wire to the wire you soldered to the pink/blue wire to the purple wire via spade/bullet connectors, tidy things up with a few wire ties, and you’re done!

Added bonus: it gets really friggin annoying to see the lights just go back and forth as it constantly adjusts, so I decided to put in a switch to kill it when I don’t care and I’m not running much boost. I just cut the red wire, drilled a hole in my fuse box panel, and connected it up. Now it’s not so annoying. Here are some pics:

i suggest a fusible link between the battery and switch, the switch you get should say the amperage to use with it. other than that, awesome write up i plan on doing this sometime this week.

I have one of these exact AF gauges, they are very cool. A bunch of people will get on here and tell you how useless it is. It serves it purpose, it's not a gauge you would tune your car with.

What color is the signal line off the O2 sensor. and which o2 sensor do you hook up the air/fuel ratio gauge to?

I cant belive no one has answered this yet. You need to hook this up to the first O2 sensor (pre-Cat). And Im 99% sure the wire is purple.
