I was just readin someones thread and they had 1.8l 323 with 9.7:1 pistons. It was an Espec familia. Are there any 9.6-9.7:1 compression pistons for the 2.0L. I already know about the j-spec 10.4 and 10.7:1 pistons. I also just did a search and australia has 9.7:1 is this correct and can i get those pistons without a engine management unit. I am gonna pm our resident aussie twilight too about this.

espec 1.8l 9.7:1 pistons become 10.2:1 when used with the 2.0
the faq has ALL the info about this

I emailed corksport about these pistons and i gave them the part #'s. Hopefully they will carry the e-spec and Aus-spec pistons. Although i am not sure as to what gains to really expect. twilight is gonna talk to mazda too. There are 2 different kinds. A 9.4:1 for the 1.8L that has oversizes. And a 9.7:1 for the 2.0L. I would think that a gain of 6-7whp from the 9.7 pistons could be possible. Although twilight dynoed @103+ with the pistons and j-spec cam stock + intake.

just spoke to my local mazda dealer - the 9.7:1 pistons cost
standard size and 0.5mm oversize both $127.38aud each (around $89usd each)
0.25mm oversive (in the shop at the moment - the guys wants to get rid of them) $87.80aud each (around $61usd each)
i dont know how that compairs to US prices....

i did read the faq. There are different pistons and compressions for different engines which i guess are both offered in e-spec and aus-spec models. Stock pistons here cost about $75 each. I will contact u twilight if i am interested in those. Also find out shipping prices to the US. Hopefully corksport will invest in the parts and there will be cheaper prices. thx

the guy i spoke to said the 0.25mm oversize are cheaper because he's had them sitting there for a while - they were ordered in for a job, but never used
shipping prices for sending them to be received in 2-4 weeks will be about $32usd, or 3-10 business days for $40usd
obviously these prices depend on the value of the US vs AU dollar

well the 1.8L supposdly has a diffeent comp ratio. But i thought that your sp20 had 9.7:1 2.0L...so i would use standard size with no oversize

yeah...thats what i thought. But there are also 1.8L pistons that are oversized to fit a 2.0L. supposdly they give a higher compression but since they just have fatter rings that isnt very good...real 2.0L 9.7 is better

so you're saying 7mm of stroke difference only equates to 0.6 increase in compression ratio? that doesnt sound right

Alright explain how this works Man. I think what u r saying is that the fp 1.8L pistons are used in the 2.0L with an oversize .5. The faq did say that the fp and fs are interchangable. Is that how it works. If thats the case i could buy 1.8L pistons here right ...or wrong. And then does twilights 2.0L have the oversized pistons or are they an e-spec class. Or are there standard size 2.0L 9.7:1 pistons. help me out cause i am getting confused. the faq doesnt explain it well...

I think he is saying that the US 1.8l pistons will fit in your 2.0l motor just fine and you will have 9.7:1 compression. This saves you the hassle of buying pistons from Australia and having them shipped.
This saves you money. This saves you time.

just sounds strange that there is a 7mm increase in stroke, but you only increase compression by 0.6

The crank is different between the two motors, head design is slightly different and a few other minor points.
But yes, the US 1.8 liter pistons will fit and give the 9.7:1 compression ratio in the 2.0 liter motor.

that works for me...Are there any problems i have to be concerned with in regards to using oversized rings? Any other issues? The ecu should handle up to 9.7 right? What gains should i expect?

i cant see why the ecu wouldnt handle 9.7's because there are people going around with 10.4's in their p5. gains, not sure. i dont think it'll be mind blowing or anything, but 5-10whp with everything you've done i'd guess

actually from my research on this site i would need engine management to handle the 10.4 and 10.7. Even Tripoint, which races 3 proteges, told me the same thing. If i get the 9.7 i can take full advantage of the gains. I think mp3moose has hi-comp but he never noticed much gain and supposdly is havin problems.
