bascially New zealand has very few indigenous mammals (only 6 types of bats total) so these insects take over their normal rolls. A weta can be compared to a rat or mouse in the ecosystem

If you're afraid of touching it, make sure you never take a survival course. They teach you that you can eat grasshoppers if you have nothing else.

Heh, when I read "weta" I was thinking of the workshop that made all the props and stuff for the Lord of the Rings movies. :D That is until I saw that THING!!! And I thought I saw some big hoppers growing up in Colorado! Booyah!

Uhhh... that is one scary bug. Did that come out of the MIB/MIB2 movies? If it can be compared to a rat/mouse in the ecosystem, does that mean it's a nuisance/pest? Does it move fast? Those hind legs look like they can poke an eye out. What kind of environment does it survive under? Does it make any annoying noises like the crickets? What a gross looking fish bait....
