I have a question that I didn't find an answer to after quite a bit of searching.

I drive a '98 626 with an FS motor. Stock output is only 125 hp, but I noticed the FS in the MP3 puts out 140 hp. Do any of you know where the extra 15 hp comes from? Is it just PCM calibration? Compression? Intake/exhaust? I have DIS, so it's not that...

Thanks for the help!

advanced timing and racing beat exhaust.

i belive the FS-DE in the MP3 is a different engine from the FS in the 626

same family, but definitely different engine

i dont know if this helps you at all. but check out this post. it describes the different fs-de's. and like somebody said. the mp3 has advanced timing and a axle back exhaust.

The 626 got crappy parts...

When Mazda put the FS-DE in the Protege they put on a better intake manifold and a few other parts are better.

And then the MP3 has advanced ingnition timing and the exhaust and a few other minor bits that add to the hp total.

Like what?

So far it looks like exhaust, maybe the intake manifold (does VICS add power?), and advanced timing, which means a differently calibrated PCM. And thanks for that link...it was interesting!

I wonder why u ask this question?
I dun think 626 use the same engine as the MP3

I know that MP3 use the same engine as P5 or other 2L pro, and the 10 extra hp is from the ECU and the Raching Beat exhaust.

sky - the four cylinder 626's and probes use the FS-DE motor like us. the older ones had a few differences with the head and crank/pistons. but essentiall the same motor. actually LInuxracer is using a block from a 626 in his car.

shaundarbie - the only power differences betweent he 130horse pro's/p5's and the 140 horse MP3 is:
1. ECU (advanced timing)
2. Axle back exhuast.

if your 626 is only 125 i dont know where the 5 extra horse the protege has is coming from. Maybe edwin knows but I'm not sure. Where did you read that you only have 125

Yeah, and I figured my '98 FS would be MORE similar to you guys, having DIS and all...

Hmmm...does the VICS have anything to do with it? I've wondered that, too. It also seems like the P5/MP3 have a kind of ram-air intake...

Everywhere. Every car mag, edmunds.com, etc. It's accurate, trust me. And it stayed at 125hp through 2002 when they discontinued the 626. Bummer, huh?!

The intake manifold has a little to do with it, but not much.

The lack of VTCS and the addition of VICS makes a minor difference.
