K, I know that new ES has disk brakes, my LX has drums. Is ES 5 lug or 4 lug? I want to convert my drums to disk brakes. What parts do i need for conversion?

I believe the ES is 5 lug. I dont know much else about this conversion than that.

I mean, not necesary for ES model parts. I just want to get 4 bolt disk brakes and just convert. Eh might as well change the brake lines while at it.

You might want to check out the Protege FAQ

the earlier model proteges are 4 lugs and have rear disc brakes. also i believe you should be able to use the ones off of the 91-96 ford escort gt seeing how they were modeled after the protege...i mean after all they do have the 1.8 bp motor.

me and another owner here are chasing this too... you will probably need to change the master cylinder, or something up the front end, coz those disc brakes require a lot less pressure than the discs

I did some research and I believe that the 2001 protege was the only 3rd gen model year to have disc brakes in the rear. I'm doing more research on that to back up my finding. I talked to my buddy at mazda and he said that all 99-03 models did have rear disc. All you have to do is call your local mazda dealer. If i get the time I'll try to get part numbers, but no promises. And yes you can get both 4 or 5 lug hubs.

the 99-00 pros have rear drum even the es. The 01-03 have rear drum 4 lug dx, lx and 4 lug es rear disc.

If you do find a 4 lug rear disc well all be greatfull. right now the only optin we have is replacing the spindle with an es but then wed need to go 5 lug. It is possible theoreticly to use the 2nd gen parts. They had the 4 lug rear disc and depending how a few trials go the same strut mounts. 1st gen parts supposedly should also come close, but would need custom parts.

the 1.6 and 1.5 l engines have disc/drum brakes - no others!!!!

the exception being ABS equipped models!!!

the 1.8 has discs front and rear

the 2.0 have discs front and rear, with a 5 stud pattern

aaaaaand only the rear setup needs to be changed - the proportioning valve is all sweet - so just rehook the handbrake, as even the control lines are the same

hope that helps y'all !!

Incorrect.....at least in the US, which is where the question was asked....

ALL 99-00 Protege's 1.6L and 1.8L had rear drum...

All 01+ DX/LX's are still rear drum...only rear discs are P5's, or 01+ ES. And of course the MP3/MSP.....

Thats incorrect my work contacted the mazda dealer down the road and the parts guy their said that all 2001 and up model (dx, lx, es all 4 lug rear drums could of had optional rear dics brakes). The mazda dealer say that they can get all the parts to convert. Try calling your local mazda dealer to see what they say.

canadian ES had rear drums, but the ES-GT had rear discs (GT is an optional package of rear discs, spoiler, and other good stuff)

Canadian ES-GT is standard ES in U.S.A.
and once again, US models 2001+ Protege DX/LX come with rear drums and they are 4 lug pattern. ES, P5, MP3 and MSP Protege's have disk brakes 5 lug pattern

if it is a 3rd gen, wouldn't the MSP rear and front disk fit?? coz as far as i know, the rear came only on 5 lug....which is good...but you'll have to swap the front disks for 5 lugs too...

i was thinking on doing this to my protege...but it became to expensive...so i left the idea

I'm getting confused LOL I have a 2000 ES and it has rear drums, but when I ask for rear brake parts the parts stores always ask me if its drum or disc... (scratch)

I'd love to do the conversion though
