2001 protege radio antenna

I just got a 2001 protege es. I was out on the high way and noticed I could not pick up reception on the radio very far out of the city, so I rolled down my window to feel the antenna and it had not come out. Does anyone know if the antenna is supposed to come out automatically when the car is started, if there's a button to extend it, or if you need to just pull it out? I gently tried to pull it out but felt quit a bit of resistance, so I figured it's supposed to extend by some type of motor.

Nope its not automatic, you have to pull it out.

Pull over before you try and pull out the antenna. Wouldnt want to wreck your car trying to do something stupid. ;)

Nah, no worries I've done far dumber while driving :D

yeah they should do something about the antenna..... on my first car..... a 1988 honda accord..... even it had a power antenna
