I have been itching to post but I need to get pictures. Planning to enter it in a show cause it looks insane. I'm gonna get pics up as soon as I can and I'm gonna put together a HOW-TO cause the hood latch needed a tiny mod. Oh yeah I forgot to say it's unpainted but it still looks bad ass.

I was gonna order one of these today. But I caled NOPI here in Atlanta and they said it was on backorder. They said it would be 4 or 5 months before they had any. So I just broke down and got a DG hood.

Why does everyone want the EVO Hood? To have a new different look or is there something else?

Dr.Sound

as for why everyone wants it.....i did it for looks alone, but there is some SERIOUS heat venting going on. Unfortunately I have yet to rig up a thermometer to get actual numbers....

09-30-2003, 05:45 PM
did it come with some sort of cover or something to prevent water from getting inside?

Umm, why would you want to paint it anyways. If you wanted a light-weight hood, and wanted to paint it, go with fiberglass. carbon fiber is as much for looks as it is function for most of us. Why hide it?

KyRaceFan

Not a bad looking hood... i think it would look better on a black car, or yellow, maybe blue.
Its still kinda ricey, but hey, its nice.. and weight savings are weight savings!

i want it for the heat venting more than looks actually...

FrozenMazda
09-30-2003, 06:30 PM
Can the hood be painted? Like the heat vents, but would like the hood to be body color and not just clearcoated.

Don't get me wrong, the carbon fiber look is slick, I just want the car to be a little more subtle.

I'd paint the vents black to match the rest of the hood, and my car.

slug420
09-30-2003, 09:59 PM
my vents should be gunmetal to match my wheels within a week or so

im waiting until i get my front grills in to have them all PCd at once

Yeah, I understood that Slug420 got the hood first and all. My hood didn't come with screws nor did it come with the plastic covers to prevent water from going in the engine. So I gotta figure some crap out.

how long did it take to get your hood and where did you order it from?

Sazabi
10-01-2003, 01:57 AM
I placed my order back in May, some time after I saw the hoods at International Auto Salon. An old friend of mine that used to be sponsered by wings west was able to order it for me. My predicament is that there are four or five other owners in my town that drive orange MSP's and I'm not the one doing stupid ca-ca like driving recklessly or dangerous street racing and losing to honda civics that are not even turboed. The youngest driver of one of the four or five is like 16. But like the adult I am, I'm, teaching him control, because he has so much to learn. And the other guy I know races everyone, loses, and complains, then asks me at what revs should he be shifting at :wtf: SO basically I want my friends to say,"Hey! There goes Kenny's(AKA Sazabi) car!" I'm getting a bad name because of these people. So I needed a drastic change and I hope these other people don't get the same hood, exept for you Slug 420 your cool cause your doing a whole body kit thing and you don't live in my town, so it's all good. All I need now are hard pipes, bigger intercooler, better exhaust system, and a boost controller. But first I need money
...

btw, did you have any or do you now have any kind of fitment issues on your hood? At first mine fit perfect, and I would latch it, and then press down on it above the latch to get it to lock. But after a few weeks with it, I popped it this one time, and when I went to close it, it was like an inch higher on one side than on the other when it was resting in the closed position. I looked at it for forever and couldnt figure it out and ended up dropping it from like 6 inches up to get it to lock since pressing down on it wasnt working anymore.

im assuming it has to be something to do with how the hood was torqued when I put it on and it must have been tweaked just a little bit to one side but I havent had a chance to really look at it.

Also, keep an eye on your bolts. I used the ones that came witht he hood to install it and when I popped my hood after a few weeks of driving 2 of the bolts were really loose from vibrations and the other ones werent too tight either

Where did you get it again?

Is it mounted the same as stock or does it have some kind of pins?

slug420
10-04-2003, 07:21 PM
its a wings west hood from wingswest.com, I think Mitch has it for 750 or something, thats where I got mine and eh hooked em up.
www.protege5online.com

it used the OEM hood latch so no pins are needed although you do need to do a little dremeling to get the OEM latch to lock

Ok, here's the dealio with the latch. Mine's had the very same problem when I first got it. It took me awhile to figure it out, but what I did was use washers to make the latch catch with the locking mechanism. I just put the washers on the screws in between the latch and the hood( I'll put up pics when I get my ca-ca digicam back if all this is confusing). As for the screws loosening on the hinges, thanks I'll check up on them, but if you didn't use thread lock, you will have issues like that. What sucked ass was my hood didn't come with bolts, so I spooled over to my nearest Pep-Boys and bought four "8 cast" type bolts. Strongest bolts I know. And the irony is my hood came with thread lock - Locktite 262.

Damn, that looks sexy. I like that grill, AutoExe?
Just out of curiosity, what paint did you use to paint your EVO grills. I want to work on the engine before I go in to the exterior stuff.

slug420
10-06-2003, 02:12 AM
RH Evolution S7s on the rims, for which I must credit Phrisco.

the hood is indeed WW, and the grills on the hood along with the Wings West mesh in the bumper and in my autoexe REPLICA grill were all powdercoated flat black...if you have run your evo hood without the plexi then im sure you know how ridiculously hot those vents get. I cant imagine anything other than powdercoating could stand up to it.......

EvilMSP
10-06-2003, 04:08 AM
How much did the powdercoat cost you?

Also when I see the hood on the site it is painted. Does it come naturally all Carbon Fibre like yours? Any idea how much it weighs vs the stock one?

why does the one hood have those side vents and the other ones dont. is it something extra to get installed
thanks
