View Full Version : Joe MBC Question

I've read random comments here and there but I haven't found a clear answer yet.

If I get the Joe MBC will I be able to set it up on my own with just driving around? Or do I need to use a dyno to really be able to fine tune it? Would it be really hard to do it without a dyno?

I would get it in a month or so and put it to around 9 psi since that seems to be the standard for people after the flash.

Thanks

Well I have had mine in for over 16000 miles and I spent a couple of days on and off just driving around the country side getting out of the car with it running and adjusting it in every gear until I had the boost I was after.
I also had some boost leaks that I found and corrected but after it was all set it ran perfect.
It would hit 12PSI then hold it until shift in the first 3 gears.
Now that I have the flash I am going to have to play with it some more to get it exactly where I want it.
All in all a good little device.

Also I set mine right back to 10PSI two days after the flash and now I am at 12 PSI again. I have about 1500miles on it post flash and so far so good. I am being very cautious about the boost levels. I just need some time to get it set in every gear mainly 3rd.

as long as you have a boost gauge in your car, you will be able to set it up just fine by driving. repeated third gear pulls until you get it where you want it basically is how to set it.

how is gas milage after installing the MBC? Do you get a lot less say at 12 psi? or is the difference minimal?

I hear that a lot to but I am unfamiliar with dyno terms. What is a third gear pull? My guess is that you put the car in third and run it through the entire gear, is that right?

Is the boost different in different gears? Why third?

You don't need to get to a dyno to tune it. You just need a boost guage. What you do is run it in third gear at full throttle from 2000 rpms to redline while keeping one eye on the boost guage. Then you make appropriate adjustments to the MBC which is either more boost or less until you get the setting that you want.

So it's basically trial and error.

yes, like stated above, just go through third while watching the gauge. boost will read differently in different gears because of the different loads on the engine. i don't know exactly why third, but that's what it's always been. it's either because it's halfway between 1 and 5, or it has something to do with the gear ratios. either way, just do third.

I get shit for gas mileage...
~20 MPG

Just drive normally (stay out of boost) and gas milage will be the same whether you're at 6psi or 12psi.

Well post flash I got the best "granny" driving milage so far
442 miles out of 12 gallons. It was hard to keep my foot out it but all in all I can achieve good milage with some restraint and 1,3,5 shifting under 3k RPM.
Hey, it aint entertaining but it does save gas on my 100+ mile days.

hey Yashooa where were you getting boost leaks from? Could you snap some pics so I can check and see if mine is leaking too? Thanks, Evan
