View Full Version : Stock MSP with Track Times

Hey everyone, just got back from Capitol Raceway in Maryland and ran my stock MSP. There were other peeps from the VA and MD area that came by and ran with me, 3 P5s, 3 Black MSPs, and one RX7.
These are my times:
R/T: 1.006
60': 2.599
330: 6.991
1/8: 10.635
MPH: 67.92
1000: 13.716
1/4: 16.352
MPH: 85.62
I have the PCM update. I was eying the starting lights so I do not know where I was reving on the start. I also never redlined.....shifted at 6k rpm.
Amber, 2nd black MSP got a 16.28 as her best 1/4 time and she also has the PCM update.
Carl, 3rd MSP and only ran once cuz he came a few minutes before closing received a WHOOOPING 15.59 in the 1/4 mile!!!!!!!!! HE DOES NOT HAVE THE PCM UPDATE! Although he had a better start and redline each gear. There are many different factors, so I am not certain if the PCM did or did not provide better acceleration times at the track. He isn't part of the forum like Amber and I are, but I told him to check it out and post his slips for everyone to see. I was curious to what times other "stock" MSPs are running post/pre PCM Update. I'm weary about modding my car till I know I can run 15s stock ;)

Oh yeah, Nate (Midnightracer) and his P5 ran a best of 16.8-16.9 1/4 mile time. Mind you this is a stock P5. Crazy shiz niz.

man i expected the msp to least hit 90mph and low 15's.
Pretty disappointing when my honda civic ex was pulling 84mph trap times.

Carl hit 88.59 MPH when he got the 15.59 1/4 time. Close enough I'd say.

Not to be rude dood, but those times SUCK. A good driver will get mid 15's at about 88-89 MPH trap times. Try working on your launches, and if your hitting 4th gear in the 1320, your still driving wrong. :D

Not too rub it in, but my old 90 civic si, stock with a cherry bomb ran 16.1 all day.
I don't have the flash yet, but I still feel my car would be mid 15's for sure.
Keep on tryin, maybe its your launch

I'm pretty satisfied with my times. It's the first time I've been in a track and racing. In due time my friend. Sorry for not being an expert like you Boost. I ain't worthy.

Yeah, I've seen a stock MSP time as fast as 15.1@91mph, but that was driven by a pretty damn good driver. You're going to have to redline it if you want to get at least into the 15's.

WOW, only 16's after the reflash, thats weird. I dont even have the pcm update and I ran a 15.8 at 88mph. I know that I could have done better because I peeled out almost all of first gear, LOTS of wheel hop. Other than that if you redline you should hit 15's. PS. I was running consistent 15.8's, but still peeling out cause I got nervous!

Don't worry. Your times will get better. I ran a 16.125 @ 84 mph after flash. But thats at 3,000 elevation. Converted to sea level its about 15.7 - 15.8. Also I only got 2 runs and i didn't redline all gears. Next time I go, i will be sure to do that and let you know what the difference is.

I ran a 15.1@90 in stock trim and currently my best is a 14.07@100MPH.
You need to drop about .3-.4 tenths off of your 60 ft for starters and also run the damn car to almost the redline on every shift or your times will always suck!I hope you are good at shifting as well and not granny shifting it.I personally power shift the 2-3 and 3-4 shift to acheive my best times.

Yeah, I feel better now knowing everyone had similar times the first time they ran their MSP or the first time they ran in a track. It was a fun time. The start is the hardest thing to practice. Wheel hop or sluggish start totally affects everything. I don't have problems shifting fast on the run....it's just the beginning....getting that quick jump. But hey, getting there is the fun of it all. Hope everyone puts their track times no matter stock or what not, cuz it's always fun to know what everyone is running.

Motor Trend drove a stock MSP to a 14.9 back in OCT 2002 just before their release and it seems that the times for this car are very Driver dependent.
I know for one I am running 12 PSI again post flash the car is definitely running faster that it was pre flash at 12 PSI.
I was getting horrible wheel hop before the flash but now it spins the wheels in a very stable fashion and will sit still and bounce off the rev limiter in the first 2 gears if I dump it at 2500 or higher.
Hooking this car up for such a run will never be that easy it is not designed for such an endeavor.
I will install my vericom again for some "hard" times.

Hey Yashooa, running at 12psi have you hit detonation? With the pcm update isnt the cars timing advanced further possibly causing this. IF you did have detonation how did you cure it?

yea i ran 16.333 and 16.999 stock i thought we were runing mid or high 14s

Power shifting is when you don't let off the gas when you shift, that's how you chirp the tires.

there are a lot of things that can cause slower times, elevation, temperature, etc... but it is mostly just driver making the times slow. you can't go out there the first time with a car and expect to run the same times that professional drivers who do this for a living run. i'm going to the track friday and will be happy if i get in the 15's, since i've only been to the track once before and it wasn't with this car.

Right and wrong.
You don't pull your foot from the gas between shifts but this does not neccessarily cause tire "CHIRP".I can chirp my tires between shifts by granny shifting all day long.It is all about the technique and driver skills.You notice that I don't power shift the 1-2 shift as it is harder to control tire spin that way and wonn't yeild as good of results.But the shifts between 2-3 and 3-4 won't create tire spin like the 1-2 so it is more effective to kee the rpm's up as I row through the gears!:D

You said it correctly
It is mainly the DRIVER!
Just don't get discouraged if you are not running what others are with the same mods,ask questions and PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT(or at least closer to?)

I ran terrible times my 1st time at the track on my Turbo MP3, and I know I am faster than a stock MSP! Keep practicing, I know I will! It's the launch.

Like I said,DRIVER!
And learning YOUR car.Every car is different and will react different.I had a few horribble runs in the MSP my first time out with it but nothing over a 15.4 bone stock.I have been racing for a long time though.I just had to learn how to LAUNCH the MSP for the best 60 ft times.

Do you guys rev to a certain rpm or just hold on the gas till the light turns green? I've noticed other drivers where they just press down on the gas and hold it and drop it from there, a lot of wheel spin too. I was pumping the gas to keep it within a certain band in the rpm...
Also, how far does our needle pass the redline? or does it instantly cut at 6500? Never tried. In my friend's Spec V I noticed he was able to get a cuple hundred more RPM pass redline.

I blip the throttle a bit around 2500rpm and slip the clutch.
Revlimiter is at ~7,000rpm.

With a new motor :p
Naw there are some freaks on here running really high boost cough ...discreet...cough...
You can buy a knock sensor that pulls timing if it detonates.
At least I think that is the deal ask Nixy Racer he is a SMartY MaN.
He can give you a link.
There is also some guy named Bcbadboy or some such that has been running 14PSI and up for months on end.
