View Full Version : POLL: If you guys had a AUTO Tranny Car (mp5) would you fix it up?
WayneTeK

Honestly, i wouldn't fix it up. It just seems like a waste of $$$ for some reason. My last car, 2000 Celica, was an auto and i never fixed it up...
It just seems like a waste of $$$ for some reason.. esepcially if you get an exhaust system. for an auto, there is a continuous sound for that hum drum from the exhaust..
but if you get a manual, there is a break in the sound when you shift, which makes it sound sooo sweet....

the poll states "(mp5)" but one of the options is "Depends on if it is a BMW/Benz.... "
anyways, i would still hook up an Auto.. just because it's an awesome hobby. who cares what tranny you have. there are some sick Automatics around..

with the onset of the hiboost turbo for autos id say its definatly shouldnt be dismissed just because its an auto.
and nothing about mt vs auto makes handling mods any less fun/ benificial.

yeah... pull up next to a riced out civic in a turbo'd pro... then take off slowly and make sure he hears your auto shifting... then stomp on it. at the next light, tell him he got beat by an automatic. hahahahaaha... that's just great. anyway, i'm modding my auto. one of these days, when i'm rich, i'm going to make it a 300whp beast with a level 10 auto tranny, the biggest mofo turbo ever, forged internals, ported and polished, etc. etc. oh yeah... and a complete engine management system. i'll pay someone tons of money to do it. then i'm gonna get me some real racing wheels and some real racing coilover system, and make it my track car. i'll eat up speedvision! hahahaaha... yeah, right.

matthew is right...only mercedes doesn't offer a manual in any of their ultralux lines. the bmw 540i comes with a manual as standard, auto as an option. the competing mercedes e430 only comes with an auto. even the amg mercedes come with an auto.

Although I drive an automatic p5 with that fancy-dancy sport shift, I'd never dream of "fixing it up" to any extent. Heck, I question why I got the HKS axle-back everyday. It'd just be more of a hassle to take it off and put the old muffler on the rusted joints.
Nothing against modifying an automatic car in general, just not the Protege5. A whopping 130hp at the crank and sub 100whp is a horrible baseline to work with and I'm not even a car guy. Sleeper or not, some cars weren't meant to do some things.
Look at Micah... for weeks/months we listened to him talk about this turbo project on his automatic. I was actually intrigued (silly me). Where does it stand now? He was trying to sell it and never even posted dyno numbers. At least as of the last time I checked...
Waste of time, waste on money and energy.

who cares if its only an auto... the AMG S55 is rediculous.. my boss owns one... he let me drive it.... his mistake :D
spazspike
09-28-2003, 08:31 PM
However, who would honestly spend more money modifying an S55? Last I checked those aren't $15,000 cars.
Plus if you notice the thread title you see the "MP5" part. We've all driven nice automatic transmission sports cars, that's for sure... we all know that 99.9% of them we'd take in a heart beat over an automatic Protege5.

I've got the mazdaspeed axleback.. and I'm putting in a CAI within the next week. Other than that.. maybe headers.. everything's going into suspension and audio.. maybe one day I'll swap the tranny.. but that's not for a couple.. err.. few years.
The auto might not make the cool noises and all.. but its still fun to whip around corners and such.. and it makes it a lot easier to eat and drive and such.

I love it, makes me feel closer to my baby, and makes me feel like I have more control.

I'm in the same boat, my wife's last car was a manual. She hated it becuase of her commute. She insisted on an auto. After we bought the auto P5, he commute changed to mainly highway. If we get a Mazda3, it'll be a manual.

i've seen mention of people saying that turboing an automatic protege5 will more than likely do more harm than good, most specifically to the transmission.
the question i have is...
what about the automatics that have the manual / tiptronic mode to them? i have an auto-p5 with the tiptronic transmission, and i was going to buy the mazdaspeed turbo kit for it. if this is going to be more detrimental to me, than i'm going to save the money and use it somewhere else.

04-18-2004, 11:26 PM
If u want to turbo an auto u need a tranny upgrade... either a new torque convertor or valvebody upgrade..... they arent expensive(compared to a manual clutch or flywheel) and will guarantee that u r protected....
www.lentechautomatics.com
the tranny's are basically identical and having spoken to them they can help u out.
they have a 385hp focus drag racer....nuff said

Akhilleus How much would it cost $$$$ to build a bulliet-proof auto tranny? Let's say good enough for like 210hp-220hp 12psi+
akhilleus
04-18-2004, 11:48 PM
well u would need a new torque convertor... lentech said the strip/street would be good(stage 1) $400 and a new valvebody is $400.... figure install everything at once another $400... maybe $1200+ to more or less "bulletproof" it. They are also making a plate differential which will be fairly affordable.... apparently its a weak area of the tranny. oh and a tranny cooler($40-$80)
honestly it would cost as much to rebuild a manual with ACT and fidanza... and the torque convertor wont wear out like a clutch will.
Or u can always buy a total rebuilt tranny.... they might make some other modifications... but from what they said u only need a valvebody, cooler, and torque convertor.... unless u are that wild focus :D

So what would be cheaper manual swap or beef up the auto tranny?
akhilleus
04-19-2004, 12:34 AM
a manual swap is pointless.... it would be at least $3k-4k just for the tranny... plus installing it would be mucho dinero.... a properly modded auto tranny will be quicker off the line than a manual any day... and with the valvebody the shifts would be more precise and responsive.

akhilleus
04-21-2004, 02:31 PM
Well the Audi has the CVT... continously variable transmission... is that an auto? I dont think there is a torque convertor. However the mazda/ford auto is very durable. In talking to lentech they use the exact same transmission on the 385hp focus. The exact same auto that is in the protege. They replace the torque convertor and valvebody but it is very realistic. It neednt be a V8. And anyways no matter what auto vehicle is being raced it will always have an upgraded tranny,... just as an MT that is raced. A stock auto is as reliable as a stock MT.... add power and eventually u will need to upgrade either of them.
Lil Freek
04-25-2004, 04:54 PM
note: auto trannies ARE stronger than MT. not in the proteges.. but as far as physics and engineering are concerned.. an AT tranny can be stronger than any MT.
i plan on turbo'ing my car.. so long as i can find a decent price for reinforcing mine. ($1200 is reasonable)

This thread is gettin my hopes back up. I have a shift-tronic/ paddle-shift/ bump-shift, whatever you wanna call it, and recently i've been reading about ppl blowing there AT tranny when they turboed. This was detremental to me because i want to turbo my car. I dont wanna do a tranny swap, thats just to much money. So recently i've been put into a bind thinkin that im gunna have to stay NA just to save the life of my tranny. My question is, does my shift-tronic (what have you) tranny have a torque converter in it so that i can beef it up with the 1200 dollar option? then i can put my foot into the land of tuboed supercars and drop-dead gorgeous women!!! Levelten is located near me in NJ, however from my research they dont offer specific items... ie they have upgrades for most tranny's but they dont have experience with any specific trannies... like lentech... personally i wouldnt bother with levelten.. as has been said they arent as helpful and they might not have the kind of expertise that lentech has either on our cars. Oh and levelten makes u send in your parts wheras lentech u can buy parst and have them installed... pulling a tranny to have it upgraded would really suck and add alot of $$
yeah but for $1200 i think u could protect your tranny over 200whp at least.
Lil Freek
04-25-2004, 07:52 PM
yeah.. i want a specific quote from them.
like site says, our tranny is almost identical to the one in the Focus.
i need something that can go over 200whp.. the Terminator Series tranny seems to be good.. 275whp.. that's about the most the engine could deal with without going through forging 'n crap..
ES turbo + Lentech tranny = $5000 in the hole for +60whp off the bat, +150whp by the time i'm done. :)

boosted autos FTW!
its only a couple hundred bucks to upgrade the tranny to take moderate boost. like... a grand to build it with a new TC. I just wish our trannies were more like the gms or volks where you have controll of every gear. I have the 02 model which didnt have tiptronic and i only have control of two gears really.
I think lentech makes electronics to add that control though. or i guess you could just get the parts for the tiptronic sincethey are the same tranny.
Ill mod it for sure. although i dont know if ill bother with boost untill im 100% on modding my motor, or just getting a kl donor and dropping that. found a ford probe GT for $600 so might be cheaper lol.

Tiptronic = manual without broken shift forks & motor mounts. I have a bombproof manual in my crazy truck with sturdy shift fork & good motor mounts to go nuts in so yes, modded my auto P5 & keepin it just like I've kept the crazy truck for 25 yrs. The wife's vehicle is the unmodded comes & goes every few yrs vehicle so got it all covered except for the straight up track car. Getting triple garage next year when moving so that hole will likely be filled too. One vehicle cannot cover all aspects so get a few or several.
