What is the best savin' gas way to drive a stick?
When will u guys shift to the next gear? I always shift to the next higher gear when it runs to 3000rpm-3500rpm. How about u guys???
I'll have problem to shift to the reverse gear even though I step the whole way on the clutch sometime.... Do u guys have the same problem too??

Thx alot~~ :D

well you want to make sure you aren't rolling forward anymore before you put it in reverse...
I usually shift at 4k, but that's just me
if you want to save gas, try and keep your rpms down

i got 380 miles in city by shifting at 2.5k rpms 95% of the time. just acceleratle low, and put in 4th or 5th gear when possible :)

gas saving mode for me = 2800 rpms on a shift and try to keep it near 2 at cruising.

so boring though. thats why you need to do canyon runs every now and then. keep the engine at 3500-5500 the whole time. feels goooooood. :D

You can drive the hell out of these things and still get good gas mileage. Like everyone said, shift at relatively low RPM's. Not too low so the engine is lugging however.

Reverse in this car must be straight cut gears with no synchros. You have to be stopped completely and there's sometimes still a little grind if you rush it. It's noisy too.

A friend of mine has Saab 9-3 and that thing that tells you when to shift... and it says to shift at 2K RPM... I bet you it's doing that to save gas...

I like to change the gears at like 3500 or 4000 rpm's.. you get a bit more power at higher rpm's I think.. :D

Was it Sir Nuke or 1st MP3 that shifts from 1 to 3 to 5 and drives like a granny? He said that he gets about 34 mpg driving that way.

Me, I shift at around 2000 rpm when possible, and jump from 3rd to 5th when I don't need to rush things and I get maybe 29 mpg, but that's with the crappy congestion in Jersey...

skipping gears??

Yeah, you can skip gears...there's no rules with a manual as far as that is concerned. Except downshifting from 5th to 1st or 2nd. That would be trouble if you overrev.

Again: keep revs low, and drive in fifth when cruising -- I was around 2000 rpm at 40 mph on the way to work. I only rev it when I feel like it, which with this car may happen all too often! BTW, anyone considering buying on soon, find one with leather. Gotta love the smell when you get in your car! Although they're slippery -- so you just hafta tighten the seatbelt down.

I'll post some pics this weekend.

Thx for ur opinions~~:D
'cause in last week, I got 16.9 mpg..... Crazy...

also when slowing dont coast this still keeps the fuel injectors going. If you downshift and "engine break" it cuts the injectiors off.

oic, thx
So... if I don't shift to any gear, and let the car coast. Will it still keeps the fuel injectors going???

BTW, I just filled up today went 300 miles on 12 gallons = 25mpg. I can't seem to make my car get much less than that. How some of ya'll can get 16mpg I don't have a clue. Are you sitting in traffic frequently?

Has anyone noticed any specific mod's that reduce fuel economy?

I just installed a Racing Beat catback, and it seems to have hurt my city fuel economy. I might just be revving higher to listen to the exhaust though......

Highway doesn't seem to be affected though. I took a trip from Hamilton to Windsor (300km) on half a tank and it was about the same with the stock setup.

No,

That was Yashooa... that crazy devil :D

I on the otherhand don't drive slow most of the time.. I try but it's hard not to push it on straight aways... I usually get between 22 to 24 in the city

I just had a brullen catback installed and it also has hurt my fuel economy. i think we tend to rev the engine to listen to the exhaust.

I haven't bothered to calculate my gas mileage yet, but I can't imagine it's that great on the freeway. I usually travel around 65-80 MPH which is about 3500-4000 RPM range. Damn this low gearing.

Personally i don't notice much of a difference in fuel economy when you shift at 3k and when you drive it harder. I feel the optimal shifting point for these cars is 3.5-4k rpms. I find my P5 doesn't feel right when i shift it at or below 3k...the engine bogs down too much.

Thanks for the correct ID of the suspect. Anyway, you're right, it's soooo hard not to push the little bugger hard. It's too much fun!

Lisakay, yah, us guys like to shift and skip gears. Remember your car is a boy!

My rule of thumb for cruising or following people: if you take your foot off the gas and the car doesn't coast (but instead it lurches forward and slows down), you should be in a higher gear.

Around town:
I shift at about 3000 for 2nd and 3nd when I'm not following someone (meaning I can accelerate as fast as I want) and quickly to 4th prolly around 2700 and 5th as soon as I reach 40mph. If I am following someone, I usually shift sooner for 2nd and 3nd but depending on their driving style and speed I adjust when I shift into 4th and 5th. Some people can't maintain a constant speed an waver between 35-40mph. I can't be in 5th if they're gonna go 35 and I can't be in 4th if they slow down below 30. I get very antsy if I can't go at least 30mph. I don't like driving in 3rd gear.

For highway:
I usually wait till about 5000-5500 to shift when merging cause its fun, but once I'm in 5th I usually stay there.
