Due to an rather unpleasent hit and run last night I am in the market for a new used car. I am as short on money and job security as I ever have been so my options are rather limited. I have found:
1999 Mazda Protege LX Description — $4,100, White 4DR Sedan, 93300 Miles, Automatic Transmission, 2WD, 4 Cylinders, Excellent Condition.

Features: A/C: Front, Airbag: Driver, Airbag: Passenger, Alarm, Anti-Lock Brakes, Bucket Seats, CD Player, Cruise Control, Power Locks, Power Seats, Power Steering, Power Windows, Premium Sound, Rear Window Defroster, Remote Keyless Entry

I will of course run a carfax on the VIN if I do decide to test drive the car.

What do you guys think? Are there any common problems with this model I should be cautious of?
Is this a resonable price?

that is no MP3, it seems like a good price for a hi milage protege, i would stay away from the auto's. (worse gas milage, higher repair cost)

yeah an mp3 is a special edition car sold in 2001.

Some ways to identify the car to know it's an MP3,
Only comes in Yellow or Mica Laser Blue
Only sold in 2001
Came with 17" Racinghart rims
Steering wheel has a badge on the bottom spoke reading "Nardi"
Seats have Silver Vinyl strips along the sidebolsters
Comes with a Kenwood MP3 player
Has a yellow strut bar on the top of front struts (under hood)
Exhaust tip reads "Racing Beat" on the side of it

There are other things it comes with, but these are some of the more obvious traits.

As far as the Protege, like most Japanese nameplated cars, they last around 200,000 miles or so! But DEFINITELY, have a mechanic you trust check it out! The only problem I have heard of is an internal oil leak! But, again, a good mechanic should be able to help you there! Just do maintenance on a regualr basis (oil change, tranny flush, spark plugs, etc) and the car should actually last you another 100,000 if need be! Good luck!
