The Protege5 is in the Speed World Challenge ladies and gentlemen. I just though i should make you guys aware if you havent already been made aware. For anyone who keeps on top of this competition Roger Foo who use to drive the Civic Si hatchback is now driving the P5. It actually looks pretyy good and i went to JT Designs who helped modify this car but there is nothing on their site about the P5. heres a pic.

Sweet pic! Where did you find it? I've been looking for pics from Sebring but haven't found any Mazdas. Which track is that from?

The pic is from laguna seca this past weekend that started off the 2002 season.
heres the site

I dont know if you notices but there is yellow tape on the gaps holding up the front air dam for better aerodynamics. I found that quite smart AND cheap for those who plan on racing there cars.

it's NOT Leguna Seca, it's at Sebring Intl Raceway down at Sebring, FL. It was part of the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring weekend. :D

here's a nice summary:

speedvision (speed channel) showed the entire race last night from 1am to 2am. i felt so proud. it was great to see a protege5 compete with civics, integras and even MB and BMW. there were also 3 or 4 mp3s competing but two dropped out right away due to tranny trouble. the p5 was doing good, the highest spot it was running it was 12 but closer to the end of the race, something happened and they did not what so the car was lapped. it was really exciting though.

I find it funny that the race car got the moon roof option... not to mention they took off the standard side skirts... hmm what does that tell you.

I guess they wanted the ABS since that only comes with the power package

well, 31 is not too bad, can't wait for the next race. Never actually notice the moonroof, haha, i wonder what that is for. :D

For Foo, 31 is garbage, the pro's had MAJOR tranny problems at sebring. Foo was 11th going into the last lap, then the car died. And if he was like the MP3's it was a tranny error. Anyone see the "drift" that he pulled? more like an ass drag, but looked neat! later guys:D

[Nomad sits down, pours a glass of JD]

Back in the old days it was just MP3 owners trying to figure out if there were any better intakes and exhausts out there. Then they realized the P5 was going to have the same engine and got jealous because it looked better. Then Foo drove a P5 in the Speed World challenge, not an MP3 and everyone realized the superior 4 door hatch platform was about to shake up the car industry. All the cool people migrated to the P5 forum, along with a few whack-jobs.
The P5 was a test car to see how the market would react to a 4 door hatch platform for Mazda's future redesign of the protege series in to the current 3. All the other car makers jumped on the wagon concept and the Toyota matrix, pontiac vibe, scions hit the drawing board. Now, no car make is complete without at least one 4 door hatch offering.

Coincidence? I think not.

Well in keeping with the theme of title of the thread. I will use my P5 for autocrossing, also it will be seen at every race weekend where I work corners, so if you see a black P5 at the corner station at Road America that be me.
