View Full Version : Msp engine will it bolt on to any other car?

I am trying to do some research if the Msp engine will bolt on to any other car (yes a probe). I heard from a few people that it will but they did not give me enough info as like what year and so on. How will i find out if the mazdaspeed protege turbo engine will fit another car?

I would think that the motor would fit in the FS equipped 4 cylinder probes fairly well. I've seen FS-ZE motors swapped into probes, so I would assume that the MSP motor would fit pretty easily too. The one problem you might run into is the ECU. I'm not sure how compatible it will be with the rest of the Ford electrical system. You may need some type of stand alone engine management. I'm sure others will chime in on this topic.

hmm, its going to run a premium to get an MSP engine, unless you already have it...

As I sometimes refer to them ..... the Anal Probe. Naw, probes are cool as long as you got a Mazda motor under the hood.

Anal Probe :wtf: i didn't come here to flame anyone but you gotta have some respect for probes as i have respect for all mazdas. There is a few guys in Probetalk.com running low numbers in the 1/4. All probes besides the 1st gen v6 have mazda engines on them. Thank's for the info guys i was looking into getting a DOHC for my 1st gen probe and since it is a mazda engine i was just doing some research on the msp to see if it'll fit in it. But now i see it'll only fit the 2ng 4cyl probe so i guess i gotta go back to the drawing board and hope i find my j-spec engine. By the way anyone know of a GOOD jap engine importer? Oh incase you guys are wondering.. i'm not lost i'll be a future mazda6 owner soon.

corksport imports all sorts of JDM mazda engines, some of which will work in the Probe.

if you have access to a MSP motor..tell me where you live..so i can steal it from you..that motor is almost impossible to find

Anything 'can' be done - that's for sure. I'm speculating the basic bolt patterns would line up w/ the 2L probe Tranny...into a 1st gen? Figure custom motor mounts; you'd have to buy the MSP tranny/axles, etc, as well.
If you want a motorswap, don't waste your time w/ the MSP Engine. Find an FE3 DOHC engine. I know of guys running close to 500 WHEEL HP with those, in 1st gen Probes/ MX6s.
Figure, $5000-10000 for engine, install, turbo, stand alone, tuning, etc.
Of course Kenetix would tell you his car has close to 400whp... ;)
But I don't stretch the truth! :p

I know the FE3 is the way to go for my 1st gen and i know what i gotta do and i am aware of how much money this project takes. The only thing is the emission, people say that they'll give me hints on how to pass with a j-spec engine but a wanted to go all legit.

With an FE3 and stand-alone, you can tune it to run however you like :)
I'd wager it'd cost as much for the MSP engine, however, to swap into your car. It may be best to simply rebuild your engine, and apply liberal amounts of boost.

Fe3 engines goes for like $800-$1200 and a standalone ecu is about $1200.
let's say i paid $1200 for the engine
another $1200 for the ecu
that's $2400 just for the engine and standalone ecu. also i have connections i could go with a small turbo if i wanna turbo it, i can keep it at around $2800-$3000 for everything i need. But i don't think i wanna turbo it i'll be happy with the 170hp that it'll give me. Shit now that i think of it it's not a bad project and it won't cost as much as i thought. Of course this would be a winter project for me.

If you just want 170hp, find an F2T to swap in. Much cheaper. But if your heart is set on a motor swap, remember:
it'll 'always' be more expensive than you think. Adding 30% to your numbers is a good start! :)
Good luck!

The f2t won't give me 170hp clean i mean i'd have to boost it up to like 12-16psi to get that much. Don't get me wrong i've been on a probe gt at 16 psi and i was getting whiplashed. It is an amazing engine although it had like 220+k miles on it and i think pushing over 180hp. This is my plan B if anything gets in my way of my Fe3 project.

Word. The Probe's actually a hell of a car. Immaturity keeps a lot of our members from seeing the real world. I apologize on their behalf. :D

From my understanding. the MSP motor is just a regular 2.0 Protege motor with a bolt on turbo. Why go through the headache of finding a MSP motor?

yea both you guys are right, i should of changed to i wouldnt buy or prefer to own a probe , but hard times are hard times . i apologize for being an ass, just havin some fun . ya know alot of translation is lost when you try and be cute while typeing

Don't know much about the F2T do you?
145hp stock, at 10? psi, Stock ECU - a $3 Bleeder valve allows for 14psi and high 14 second 1/4 mile times.
At 16psi, on a stock F2T, I'd guess 170hp (At the wheels), 205-210ft-lbs.

FWIW, I've got a Probe which would wax 98%? 99%? of the cars belonging to members of this forum. Big deal, right? The point is, people can say whatever they want about the car, as it pulls away from them. ;) :D

never heard prote-gay before. But anyways who ever gives bad names to our cars are people that don't know nothing about them and has never driven them before. I never thought that my 2gen probe gt would have the handling it got or the power at only 164hp stock untill i drove one.

i know little of the f2t as you can see. but i do know that it is possible to get 170hp out of it. i own a 1st gen gl and a 2nd gen gt both mtx

whats up with the probe bashing, i know a few guys with probes, they are pretty quick! though, i dunno about swapping a MSP motor in, its just a regular Mazda 4 banger w/ a turbo that can be added aftermarket.

whoah i just read all this thread...hehehe whats up probeguy. hey man of course everyone will tell you to seek the ultimate FE3 but if not I think the F2T will work out good for you. Forget about a MSP FS or any FS motor, too much work and money to fit the 1st gen Probe plus a N/A FS wont give you much. I know you said you dont want to spend much but how much is too much?

Why don't you just buy my ~300hp Turbo 2nd Gen GT - $5500 + Half shipping. :-)
Yeah - frankly, if you want ~170hp, it'd be easiest to sell your GL and find a good 1st gen GT - you can pick them up for a couple thousand dollars - the price of a motor swap, with 100% FEWER hassles.

I heard that it's possible and not too difficult to swap in a 2.2L turbo 4 out of a 1st gen MX-6 in either the 2nd gen MX-6 or Probe. I haven't been able to confirm this yet, but it might be something to look into.
Good luck.

i also have a 94pgt that is going to be worked on as soon as i get what i want for my 1st gen. selling my gl is a no no, i have lot's of $$ into it i have pics but i don't know how to post them so if you want some give an e-mail ad and i'll send them and you'll see what i'm talking about. it's all show no go unless if i'm toying around with with a civic. i can get a whole complete 1st gen gt for less than $800 and all that i need to do is just swap everything over so that option is not going to be expensive. now the Fe3 i know i need a lot of crap but it looks like we gonna have a long winter so i should have the time and $$ to finish it by spring.

Just a basic F2T + ECU Swap would be MUCH more straight-forward; and provide solid power...and they are 100% emissions-compiant. No worries.
:)
NOt wanting to read all this I will do my own thing.
Why waste money on the "MSP" engine. Its the same 3rd gen engine every protege since 2001 has had.
Why waste money on a Probe to do a fairly unproductive engine swap. just get a 2002 protege for alot less pain in the ass.

i was just checking my options on newer engines but it won't fit my car so i don't need anymore info on it no more thanks
i have spent alot of $$ in my 1st gen but that is what you do to make it look and run better. I am going to sell my 2gen gt to buy a mazda 6 but i am still keeping my 1st gen of four years it's to hard to let her go so i'm keeping her till death do us apart.
I wasn't flaiming just so yo know, I genuinly didn't understand the intention.
