Ok, I have had my MSP for a couple of months, but I just recently have decided to mod it. I started with the "best bang for the buck" on the parts thread.. But the next thing I want is for my turbo to SOUND GOOD, I LOVE the sound of the turbo.. What Do I Need to Do?? Please help.. any insight will be appreciated. Also I live about half way between Dallas and OKC, I am looking for other MSP peeps in my area!

umm a cold air intake will change the sound, make it more obvious that you have a turbo.
you can also change your bpv to a blow off valve....

any open filter will make the turbo spooling sound louder, just be careful where you place it or you will lose power.

Hard I/C pipes make a huge difference as well in sound.

hard i/c pipes = more or less sound, and what's the difference in sound characteristic ?

BPV? LOUDER

TURBO SPOOL? LOUDER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Metal resonates............ If you thought the stock turkey was cool, wait til you hear the flock of turkeys under the hood now.

Sorry for all the Technical Turkey Talk.

MSPDave125 got it - just wanted to know how the sound characteristics changed with the metal vs. plastic piping. Which is louder, and is the sound higher, lower, or what? More or less whistle, etc.

He pretty well got it, I think. "Louder" seems to be the word of the day. Wonder about insulating them to keep the intake charge cooler thought....

yeah thats y all the stock stuff is plastica nd restrictive cause it will absorb sound and such. everything mentioned here will really open up that turkery..errr i mean engine sound!! :D

Screw the filter and so, get an manual boost controller. Its all my cousin's MSP has and it brought the car from above average to holy crap Batman!!! SRT killer*. Hehehe.

Anyways, should try an come down to Dallas this Saturday, we are all meeting at the Car Toys car show, the 13th at 10:00am

Sorry for the lack of information. My car, a P5, has a HKS SSQ BOV, my cousin's MSP has the Pirana ;) MBC.

the turkey sound comes from the wastegate not the stock bypass valve/BOV.

What the hell are you talking about?

You MAY experirence some compressor "wobble" or even a little "surge" because our OEM BPV is weak. They both sound like a turkey when you are off throttle. But the only noise a waste will EVER make is a pop when it hits it's limit and the spring inside releases.

Please explain your theory.

If you really want to hear the turbo go with a 3" pipe off the turbo. Also the hard I/C pipes make a big difference.

FYI- Any mods that you do will increase the amount of sound your car produces. (i.e. big exhaust, FMIC, CAI etc)

I dont know how your BPVs works, but, if I disconnect the vacuum in my BOV, the turbo will make a similar Turkey Sound in my turbo Protege5...and thats because the turbo is being forced due to not venting or recirculating.

I think your BPVs are too tight from stock. I can try record it both ways.
In my case, just because my turbo is bigger, the rithm of the gobble gobble is a bit longer.

Oh man, I need to get some video of my car in action now. The turbo spool is soooo soo noticiable. You hear this highpitched jet engine sound, and then WHUTSHESSSSST! when my BPV (Flyin' Miata) hits. I live for this shit!....:D

Do you necessarily need a name brand piping? Cuz I got a shop that will make one for me.

Also 3" is not too big? I know that most people that are makeing them are doing 2 1/2!?? Sometimes it makes a difference and sometimes it doesn't. Cuz in my old honda I once had a custom pipe fabd' and it was too big and I didn't have enuff back presure.. just a thought.. please clarify for me, I am new at the turbo stuff.

thanx

if you are going to raise the boost. I recommend 2.5 or bigger.

Also, big exhaust pipes will help the turbo to run cooler. I remember mi friends Supra, he had stock exhaust of 2.25inches and when boosting a lot, when opening the hood you would noitce the turbo was glowing RED. Now with 3 inches it doesnt.

Custom piping is fine. They will be made just like any big name companies will make it (on a mandrel bender w/ a jig big enough for 3" piping). But if they are donig any welding I would make sure to look at previous work so you can get an idea of how good their welds are.

For piping size I would suggest 2.5" hot sideand 3" cold side

Cool, I think I will save the $900 bucks and get my shop to make them. Thanks for all the info.

Also does anyone know anything about this car toys car show this weekend? time, location??? Thanks

my theory came from hearing and seeing Dexter's MSP having its BPV removed and replaced with a friends HKS BOV, and hearing the HKS and turkey sound at the same time still, where else would the sound be coming from then??

BPV can sound similar.

Most likely it is a combination of sounds. BPV + Compressor wheel wobble. The wobble will make the "wuh wuh wuh" sound.
Wobble is common in Ball Bearing turbos. Nothing to be affraid of.

Like I said before. Your wastegate will make one sound. A POP. That is it. That is all it is meant to do.

Agreed. There is nothing to argue about. Your Wastegate does not sound like a Turkey.

Thanks.
