well im glad you are okay man, i was just saying. when i had a similar accident (only one flip, not 15) i also walked away 100% unharmed, but i still felt like shit for the longest time. and now its coming back to bite me hard, my insurance dropped me and i need to find some and they are all expensive now. when i had my accident i wouldnt even take pictures because i felt like total shit and i didnt even post on the board for the longest time (eventually i did). i gues we are just 2 different people but like i said man im glad you walked away unhurt and i hope everything works out in your favor

vultures! :D
well it's sunday, this happened yesterday.
i'm not sure exactly what's gonna happen.........tow trucks cant bring it out cause it's sittin so deep, so they will use a helicopter in couple of weeks. there is no way for other people to know where the car is because u cant see it from the road. only i and my friends know where it is :D.
i dont think anyone will touch it.......since it's gonna sit there for at least a week.........i just dont want some fucktard pulling out a radio and speakers.
oh, and i will be writing a letter to Mazda thanking them for building such a strong car.
also, after telling the CHP officer what happened, he bought me a lottery ticket :)
You are so lucky. 'Glad you walked away. That's what is important. A Deer, too! Damn! I see them quite often out here where we live. I always think about that, too. ...running out in front of me. Just a few weeks ago, my wife was on her way to work, and one crossed her path just a few yards in front of her. She hasn't forgotten that. When your traveling 50+ on a 2 lane back country road, shit happens fast.

Now there's a guy who cares about deers! ;)
Odd, I was just watching a segment on TV today about "World's Most Dangerous Animals" and they were saying deer is the worst because of the fact that both are growing in population and humans vs. deer on the road is becoming all too common. They showed several dead deer on the side of the road from being hit along very similar tread marks from those that swerved off and hit a tree only to be killed. Gotta' watch out for them things man! They're not so innocent afterall!

09-07-2003, 05:45 PM
well, since itz gonna sit there for a week, pull out what u can, thats easy to pull out, cuz that way a thief wont jack the easy shit and if they want the hard shit, let em, they want it pretty bad then, but hopefully they dont... in the end it makes the car lighter for the chopper to pull out, they can only haul so much, and if it rains its gonna ruin ur interior so pull what u can, and i'll say right now, i might ask for ur dash and side trim pieces around the buttons and all, lol, if u actually want to do that ;), but important thing is that ur ok, and im sure ur family is thinking the samething

As I'm sure you know, after rolling 15 times you're lucky to be alive. For your next car you might want to look into an SVT focus -- they're going real cheap around here. I like MSPs better but just in case you're looking for something different........

Nice skid marks, how fast were you going? I had the same thing happen to me minus the rolling. The cops ruled it as I was driving too fast. From those skid marks I would think 45-55mph but I cannot see the beginning of the trail.

Victor, glad to see you are ok. Sorry about the car, but you have the right attitude...it's replaceable, you aren't.
For the others, the reason you don't hit the deer is that there's a good chance the 400 lb. deer will come through the windshield after you hit it. Remember how messed up people were when some sh*thead kids dropped bricks off an overpass onto the cars on the freeway underneath? Well, imagine a 400 lb. brick and what that would do to you.
The only proper avoidance maneuver for this is one you practice all the time, at speed, when autocrossing: offset gates. I strongly recommend people at least try an autox course to get an idea of what your car can do near the limits of adhesion, and to train yourself to control the car properly when approaching those limits. When something like this happens, it's so fast you don't have time to think. You just react. It's worth it to hone those reactions off the street at your local autox.

Victor, you were the first person I talked to before I even joined this site. You've been very helpful & I hope you don't leave us now.
I can't even understand how you survived rolling 15 times & 350 feet down a cliff (especially without a scratch like you did), but I'm glad you are ok. You have the right attitude about your car: I missed out on a semester of school & a lot of other stuff because I was in the hospital, but I look at it the same way. Material stuff can always be replaced, but the fact that you are ok is what's really important.
You know, I think you should petition your local government to put a crash barrier there. From the pictures, I can't understand why there wasn't one there already & now it's clear what can happen. If it were me, I would want to make sure that no one else would ever have to go through what you did.

You are dumb. Go get in your car right now. Drive down the street at 25mph. Mash your brakes as hard as you can. Get out of the car with a handy dandy tape measurer. Measure the skid marks. They will not be any longer than 10 to 15 feet. Probably not even that much. Don't question me about physics, I will make you look very dumb.

Hope this clears this up for you. These skid marks are more than 50 to 60 feet long. He was going at least 40 to 50mph. I don't care how hard you swerve a MP3 or MSP at "20 to 25mph", you WILL NOT lose control like that. I owned an MP3 and trust me, it would not lose control at that slow of a speed.

Open your eyes moron. think like an investigator for a second. Look at the road, look at the back ground scenery. You can see how curvy the road is and in the background you can even see how the road ahead makes a sharp turn around another corner. He was trying to be a rally car driver. He wasn't as good as he thought. And he and his car paid for it. Hopefully he learned a lesson. And thankfully there wasn't another lane where another driver could have been.

Besides, crime scene investigators aren't at the scene while a crime is happening. Should a jury declare the offender innocent just because the investigator that solved the crime wasn't there when it happened? Try not to be so stupid. You are making it too easy for me to make you look dumb.

Dr. Sound: What an unbelievable fall! My first thought when I saw your pics was how little damage was on the MSP (course that was just the front). I'm glad I got that pic of your car w/Spicy's a couple weeks ago! You were definitely being watched over that day. I am glad to see that you are safe. That is a mind boggling fall and for you and the car to be in such good shape is nothing short of a miracle. Take care. :D

I hate to look stupid by misspelling a bunch of words. If yo look at 80% of my posts, they have been edited because I go back to make corrections so I won't look dumb. I'm just telling you what I am observing here.
I see skid marks that are a minimum of 50 feet long. I see a guy that looks like he is about 6' tall. Use his height to approximate the length of skid marks. I see in the foreground a one lane road with a sharp right turn. I see the way the road hugs the mountain in the background. I see other photos of a young guy with his young friends making "peace" signs like this is all cool and it's not a big deal.
What does all this spell out to me? What the hell do you think. Use your brain.

Ok...I don't want to sound one sided here, but...
Those marks are around 45'. I would not put them over 15 yards. They are also, not from braking...they are from the tires folding and him still plowing forward. Otherwise there would have been ABS type marks...spotty, you know? Had he hit the gas, he may have made the turn. However, for him to have to have been turning and cause a skid mark that long, he knew the turn was there...otherwise you'd see a shorter mark, and probably a lower rate of survival. Something must have obstructed him, but he was probably going more like 30-35 (40 tops) for it to drag that far on a scrubbed turn. That's my best guess.
And Ben...your older posts were helpful, but lately you're just a real bitch. A dose of reality is always appreciated, but perhaps the word TACT is missing in that magical spell checker of yours. Please look it up at dictionary.com, and use it more frequently.

I don't have any tact. I am very blunt and I say what I am thinking. Yeah it offends some people that are soft, but I really don't care either. People that know me personally know that most of the time I am kidding and that I have a sarcastic type of personallity. But personalities don't convey over the internet.:p

We all misspell and have typos (especially, it seems, when correcting ourselves). Everybody does it. It's no big deal and I don't think it should, to an extent, be used as a gauge of someone's intelligence. Especially if you don't know that person personally.
Also, when YOU flip 15x down 350 feet into a ravine and live to tell about it I HOPE someone shows you sympathy. Because you certainly don't for anyone else. Otherwise leave it alone and for pete's sake stop flaming left and right. It's getting trite.

Im with Big Ben on this one. They were racing. Tried to push the car too hard. Lost it. Rear wheel drive might have been different, but the MSP is FWD. And when you try to gas it through the corner too fast. The car follows where the nose is pointing. Off the side of the ledge. Perhaps to embarrased to admit he totalled his car while trying to be an amatuer race car driver? Who knows. But a Deer? Why not a moose, or a snake, or squirrel??? pffff I woulda tagged any deer on that road, considering there are no guard rails. My 2. cents. Peace

True, but before any gut reaction comes instinct. LIFE OR DEATH? Hmmmm? :D I like my life. I won't let even the deepest burning sensation in my gut tell me to swerve around a deer, and launch off the side of a damn mountain. Hit it, and pay for the damage, and hope it dies so it doesnt have to suffer. If it doesnt die, run it over again. I've seen people leave wounded animals in the road. Thats disgusting. Hence the saying "Put it out of it's misery". But you are correct about the gut thing somewhat. An animal pops out, sometimes you just DONT wanna hit it. But I still say he was driving like a tough guy. And rolled it 15 times? That sounds a bit much. 15 times and youd be a vegtable. Unless it rolled all 15 times in the air. lol. Who counts when the car is rolling? I have been over in a car, but I sure as hell wasn't counting. Watch WRC sometime, rolls happen so fast you won't be counting. Maybe it did go fifteen times, maybe it's a slight embellishment.
I agree that the skid marks look like plowing, they certainly do not look like braking. And it's obvious understeer, otherwise the tire marks would get closer together as they progressed. These do not appear to be doing that. I think it is hard on the brakes, steering full to the right, and car going forward. Anyone hear of the traction circle, or tire adhesion circle? Tires cannot be doing 100% of two things at once. Accelerating probably would not have saved this, but a lift off the brakes and a little less turn in might have. I agree with Morris that autocross or a few track days/schools can prepare you to react better when this kind of thing happens. After all, a "deer" is only a moving cone right?
When I was in school, my buddies and I hit a deer at about 40 mph. Fucked up the car but the deer got up and ran away. I think I would have hit the deer and taken my chances with the airbags.
If you believe that a deer was there.

p.s. by the looks of the skids, he had an ealry turn in with an early apex, this is characteristic of entering a turn too quickly and trying to scrub off speed. Had he had a later turn in and a later apex he likely would have been able to see said deer and avoid it or stop.
IMO of course, I wasn't there.
Britt
but then agian if he had hit the deer think about it, the deer could have sent him airborn depending were and how he hit it, he coudl of flown up 20 feet then slammd down and then possiblity of the car blowing up kapow... ... everyone says hit hte deer but with a turn like that i would have probablly done the same thing.

I feel kinda upset about this thread.
Vic posts that he totaled his car, and that it is still in the canyon. And people are swarming him like vultures for parts and questioning his story. That does not seem right to me. Even if he isnt dead on with his story or if he is way off , who the hell cares? Think about when you were in your last accident.... It all happens so fast. Im sure it is hard to remember details , when all that is going through your mind is "I'm going to die." Who cares how many times it rolled, or what was in the road, Or even how long the skid marks were because of how fast he was going. Point is, his MSP is in the canyon, It is gone, the damage is done. I am so glad that this is just a RIP MSP thread, opposed to a RIP Dr Sound thread.

Like I said you can say what you would do all you want but until you are in the situation you honestly can't. Sometimes things happen so quick that you react before you have time to think about the consequences.
Animal jumps out in front of you. Gut reaction is to swerve. Ooops I am driving on the edge of a ravine with no guardrail. Shit too late. I caught the dirt and down I go. Too much can happen too quick to be able to make a rational decision. Or any decision for that matter. You can try to rationalize all you want what you could have or should have done after it is over. But while it is happening sometimes there is no time for thinking. He could have been playing with the radio. Might have been in deep thought. Might have blinked. Anything that could have not made him see the deer until he was right there.
I'm not gonna try to analyze the whole situation or the variables because I wasn't the one in the drivers seat. But I have been in situations where everything happens too quick to even realize what is going on until it has already happened.

That's the same impression I got too. It seemed like every other post was "hey, sell me your parts." I think enough people made it clear they'd be interested in the parts if he wants to sell them, so there's no need for anybody else to express interest in the parts. If Vic wants to part it out and sell them, I'm sure he'll let us know.

As a nurse who works in the ER and the ICU and having worked at a Trauma Center for four years as a Paramedic and two years as a flight medic, this language might be a tad extreme. I don't doubt or decrease the impact of his experience, but it is hardly "near" death.
How about "could have died." Because he could have, but didn't and wasn't near death.
Seems trite I'm sure, but there is a huge psychological difference between walking away from a big wreck and spending weeks intubated in the Unit and months and months of therapy and rehab to over come injuries and having your family fear your impending death, having to learn to walk, speak, eat, etc...
I personally am glad to see you walk away from it, it certainly could have been way worse.

Has anyone else wondered why else he would have taken that turn so wide? Look at the picture. It's at most a 25 mph posted limit turn. It's practically a hard ninety with a cliff as the left side shoulder. Vic's also made it seem as though he's been down this road before. So I assume that he was taking the turn tight to make it little quicker. Then !boom!...deer...and he swerves to the left throwing the apex completely out, and trying to turn hard back to the right while braking. Now...I don't expect him to have accelerated w/o taking his foot off the brake. I also know from experience that if you drop the hammer in 2nd going 20-30mph the torque steer WILL pull you around that turn. This is my view...I have to believe what he told me and then back it up with science, because he has never given me any reason to question his honesty before.
Maybe you should submit those pics to mazda as crash worthiness tests, Vic! :D Might fetch you enough coin to buy a carbon fiber wallet! Good luck recovering from the loss, bud...and make sure to thank whoever up there that was watching you.

Good luck recovering from the loss, bud...and make sure to thank whoever up there that was watching you.
actually this was my very first time on this road.......i've heard pretty crazy stories about it (1 1/2 months ago an M3 flew down 150 feet just a few miles from where i was).
my tire markings went right over letters in the asfalt marked with spray paint "CHP 3/02" i asked the police officer what they were and he said that there was an accident there last year,
when i went down to my car, about 10 feet from where it landed there was a license plate with a rock over it (someone died here 2 years ago)........while i was looking for my wallet i found a rusted half way decayed motorcycle (seemed like it's been there for a long time). my car actually hit it and made it stand out from the ground.

oh and ben, there is a thing called perspective.....things look smaller the farther they are.
in the pic i'm standing where the skidmark starts.
when i lied down on my back........the skid was about 3 times as long as i am high......i'm 5'10.
not 60 feet...
i almost came to a stop, and i was sure that i will stop in gravel.......but then i felt the car rub the ground with its belly........and it just tipped over and started rolling........i think i was at 5 mph when it tipped over

WTF?!:wtf: I agree with girth
Of course I feel for the guy! Bad accidents are not cool. Key on the word accident. Shit happens. And theres no better way to put it behind him than to sell the motor and tranny and ECU. Get what you can out of it and be done with it. Your loss could totally be someone else's gain. Yes I sound a bit selfish here (not intentional), but MSP parts are hard to come by. Don't let them go to waste in the crusher. Givem' back to their family.
Now, another thing. Mister T. Let's say you own a race team. Your driver flips your #1 car and it's a write off. He gets out of the car and stands on it and gives you a thumbs up! Your reaction is :
1. He's okay
2. Oh my god the car is fucked and how much is it going to fix it?
My guess is you think about the money first. (Majority of the world would think of the money first)

ummm... if those skid marks are 50-60 feet long, can we safely assume that the gentleman walking in the background is about 12 feet tall? give me a fucking break. open YOUR eyes you condescending little turd. being the physics buff you are, you should have realized the scale of the photo before you posted your blabber. aren't you supposed to be well versed in the physics of optics? being a photographer, i know damn well that the line is not 50-60 feet long, especially with someone who is, as you say, about 6 feet tall in the back. the lens used to take this photo was probably about 35mm. if the gentleman in the back was 60feet away, there's no way in hell he would have been that big when the magnification for a 35mm lens is .7x life size. that means the farther they are away, the smaller and smaller they get, but at a rate .7x faster than with a normal 50mm lens.
and who the hell made you crime scene investigator with no knowledge of the angles of the photos and what kind of camera equipment was used? notice all crime scene investigators use a 50mm lens when they want to properly scale something, then wider and longer focal lengths as needed to show either environment or detail.

I have a deer story! Back in the day, when I had no ride, I was riding the the bus down Rt. 355 in Gaithersburg. Well, all of a sudden the bus driver hits the brakes hard and we hear this *whump*. We had just head-on'd a deer at 45mph, its head was outlined in the glass - big concave depression in the window. The damn thing *got up* and ran into the woods!!! I'm sure it died shortly after, but it still got up and ran away! 45mph BUS + deer you would think we'd be havin' some venison. It's a good think Dr. Sound didn't take the chance of hitting it, you never know what could have happened. The variables and possibilities are infinite.

Actually, at about 20-to-25mph, the deer would have simply toppled over onto the hood and maybe even roll up on to the window and break it (without fully going into the passenger compartment). Drive along at 20 and keep it at 20, and then imagine that things are infront of you and you run into them. If you're going 20, apply the brakes (not slam on them) and still hit the deer, it won't go in. It'll prolly damage a lot of shit, but I don't see it going in.
Hey Vic! Next time, hit the fucker! Or at least swerve a little so that you knock it in the ass or head and make it spin a few times! MAHAHAHHAHA!#@!$

I'm probably the 50th person to say this (I'll admit I didn't read EVERY post in this thread... it kind of turned into other discussions there for a little bit) but I just wanted to say I'm super-glad you were able to walk away.
Sorry to see your poor car all bent up, but it's clear you loved her and have had some fun. It also looks like she saved your life. I love that the highway patrolman bought you a lottery ticket!!
Our housesitter hit a deer in our 1996 Mazda Protege at the end of July, which was what led us to buying our new baby MSP. :D Interestingly, our airbag didn't go off either, but then I think airbags are triggered by an impact to the front bumper, which we (and from the looks of it, you) didn't actually have.
Who knows where you go from here? Another car, another make or model? Regardless, enjoy life. And always "enjoy the view".

Dr.
Glad to see you're okay and were able to walk away from the wreck. I was in a similar boat with my MX-6. was just getting ready to order an FS-ZE to drop into it as well as some other mods (I was actually driving to my work to place the order online) when somebody in an MR-2 decided not to see me and pull out in front of me on the highway. Got slowed down to 50 before I plowed into him.
Once we all found out we were ok and able to walk and such (I was alone in my car, but the MR-2 had a passenger... both guys were 60+), all I could do is look at my car, shake my head, grin and say "Son of a Bitch".
Walking away from something like that kinda keeps priorities in line and I agree with you there... the car CAN be replaced. Won't be the same, but it can be replaced. Family members can't.
Again, glad to see you're okay and if you are driving that road again and see a deer with a Mazda logo or the rest of your spoiler in his antlers... TAKE HIM OUT!!!!!!

Don't EVER regret swerving to miss the deer.. ever ever ever.. You know by swerving you survived 100% ok.. which is the most you could ask for.. so chances are, by hitting the deer things would have been worse. Not to mention had you hit the deer, he'd be on your hood or in your lap, and you couldn't have made that corner anyways..
That being said.. in most situations (and yours doesnt fall into 'most' in my opinion).. the safest thing to do is to hit the deer..
My parents live in the country where there are lots of wild animals.. a few close calls and an accident in the family caused my parents to do research into the 'proper' way to handle the situation...
Brake hard.. obviously.. (do NOT!!!! e-brake).. if it is obvious that you can not stop in time (or you didn't see it soon enough to brake at all).. right before you hit the animal, hit the gas, floor it.. (this is why you don't e-brake).. this will bring the front end of your car up, and help deflect the animal either to the ground and under your car, or over your roof.. instead of through your windshield..
I know it sounds sort of bizarre.. but if you think about it.. by braking only, your nose is to the ground.. and you've now created a ramp for the animal to roll/slide up into your lap.. The idea is to either create a wall it will 'bounce' off of or create enough upward momentum to make the criter airborne so it doesn't take your head off..
Anyways, sorry to ramble.. I just wanted to pass on the advice, hoping it will be useful to someone someday.

I'm also shocked it's still down there... I suppose it would be rather difficult to pull it out but still... with a number of (still)valuable parts to be had, I'm surprised someone hasn't gone fishing. hmm... actually, I'm not even sure if they make a crane that could handle that. good god!!!
you and that freakin deer are gonna meet one day up in heaven and have a godo laugh.... L8R

We all have gone fishing at his car MANY times. Everything that could be used or sold was. There is nothing left of that car..

it seemed like i was rolling for ever.
after first 2, i kinda got over the shok and started understanding what was going on.
i pressed myself into the seat as hard as i could.....mainly because after the first roll the driver side window broke and my elbow flew up and hit the ground as the car was rolling onto its side.
then i understood that i cant be loose, otherwise i'd be flying all over the interior of the car.......and would eventually fly out of the one of the 6 openings.
so i pressed myself with my arms and legs. arms on the steering wheel, legs on the firewall behind the pedals........untill it came to rest.
i remember 2 flips were in the air.......there was just silence.......then it landed and rolled about 4 more times.

Vic: " steph can you pick me up to go to Life"
me: "why, what happend..."
Good god man - You’re lucky ta be alive. I have to say that the car held up well. I would expect the damage to be far worse. When my orange MSP broke loose in the aurora tunnel I thought I had it bad. Your situation is far worse. A sad sad site.
When you’re done grieving any chance you could hit me up with the salvage yard that berried your ride? I'm looking for an 03 interior. It's going to a good cause and will be used for future 03 orange mods.
(Strike the salvage yard - It sounds like its still at the btm, RIPN)
