yes, I buckled......I traded in the Element tonight for a brand new 04 SRT-4 (the 04's now have the LSD and the bigger injectors from the 03 stage 1 kit). Looks pretty good in the red actually but DAMN it has a lotta wheel gap....gotta get some springs. It has a sunroof too which I didn't really want but the 04's are so hard to find I just bit the bullet. I just drove it home and didn't go over 5k rpm's cuz I'm breaking it in but here are some first impressions compared to my MSP:

1. LOUD!!!! The SRT is really loud inside cuz there's no mufflers......good thing is that it's throaty as shit so sounds pretty cool....on a long drive it may get old but the stereo should drown it out.

2. Brakes - the brakes in the SRT feel really good........nice feel and stop on a dime.....first impression here is that it's on par with the MSP.

3. Solid - the MSP just feels like a more solid car.....the SRT has a bit of a "floaty" feel but I think some lowering springs might fix that......it's not a huge thing really but you can tell.

4. Shifting - the SRT gearbox is a bit slushier than the MSP.....where MSP shifts feel solid and exacting the SRT doesn't feel as precise......but the SRT gearbox feels better than any other domestic I've driven.....quick shifting is no prob in the SRT, especially with that big ass shift knob that feels good in my big ol' hands.....that little MOMO knob in the MSP is forever slippin' outta my hands.

5. Interior - this one was actually closer than I thought it would be......actually pretty much a draw. The SRT dash has the silver gauge faces with the red letters and looks really tight all lit up at night.....plus the boost gauge is there too and looks good. The recaro-like seats in the SRT have huge bolsters everywhere and whip on the MSP seats......but for a long trip I'd rather have the MSP seats because they have more lumbar support for me. MSP has lots more headroom though and overall feels like a more comfy daily driver car. Oh, and the SRT has power windows only in front...they're crankers in the rear......I've heard different reasons for this but it's between cost savings and weight savings....I really don't give a fuck which cuz I don't sit in the back :)

6. Looks - MSP wins hands down.....by far the best looking sport compact there is IMHO. Gotta say the SRT isn't too shabby though....the red is that really cool Viper red and that combined with the fog lights and the big intercooler in the front make it look a little mean......should look damn nice once I get rid of that friggin' wheel gap.

So, those are my first impressions after the 1st 70 miles.....it's kinda cool now that I can personally attest to any shit talking between the SRT and the MSP without being really biased. Although at this moment the MSP is still my fave......no question I would have bought an MSP to replace the Element if we didn't already own one.....so the SRT gets a shot......more comparo's to come as I break her in !

Cool. It would be quite an experience to own both, that's for sure and it will be interesting to see which you prefer after a few months.

If you don't mind saying, how much did you pay for the SRT?

I paid sticker.......haggled for a few hours about the trade-in though since I was upside down in the Element so that worked in my favor for about $500 extra bucks.....here's the price breakdown on the SRT:

Base MSRP - $20,450

Sunroof - $695

Destination Charge - $545

Total Sticker - $21,690

For now I think everyone will pay sticker on the 04's.....if any dealers try those retarded markups like they were doing on EVO's a while back they'll be called out on the forums.....nobody should have to pay markup.

not sure......none of the lots I've visited or called had any 03's either so they're probably still getting sticker.

The MSP is a HUGE step in the right direction for Mazda, and much better things will be coming I believe.

BUT, I hate to say it, the SRT is a BAD ASS car. The thing can even hang with my lowly S2000.:D If I miss a shift, it will beat my lowly S2000.

Damn someone beat me to the MSP/SRT-4 garage. Hopefully when I get back from my deployment, I will have both. Same setup - SRT, mine MSP, hers. When I get home is forever a mystery. Our deployment just got extended two more weeks! YAY!

congrat's on the SRT-4. i'm thinking of doing the same thing that you did but with a STI or EVO as my daily driver and give the MSP to my girl.

yeah, I actually had a deal worked on both of those cars but bailed at the last second because I just didn't wanna quite drop that much cash. My local dealer has one blue STI left with a sticker of $31,065.......and 7 miles on the ODO......."drool".

great, now the MSP are being relegated to 'girlfriend's car' status :(

"yeah, my gf can't handle all that massive power from the SRT, so I thought I'd like to let her drive the cute car instead"

Cool comparison man. I'm sure that once you get to open the SRT-4 up a bit after break in, you'll get to enjoy all of that power. So basically, what I got from your review is that the MSP is more refined than the SRT-4. That sounds about right to me. I'm glad that they decided to throw the Limited Slip on the SRT-4, that should work wonders for handling. Especially once you throw any halfway decent damper ajdustable coilover kit on it.

the SRT-4 is muffler-less.
And BTW, someone already has that driveway. he has an orange MSP and a Red SRT.
Congrats buddy!

No mufflers, but they have a couple of resonators to quiet them down.

Definately a nice purchase... i think that if i knew what i know now about srt4s, i mightve bought one over the MSP... but i still love my car.. and i can hang with stock srt4s... problem is... no one keeps em stock. :/
