im probley going to go for a test drive today and i was wondering when you guys drive the car does it feel like your driving a wagon? or like a huge bus? i mean i think i want this car but then my moms like "their comparing this car to other wagons its a wagon" and im like shhhhh :( i just dont know what to do

when you go for that test drive, just find the most twisted road you know and have at it! You'll be pleasantly surprised ;)

this car feels like playing mario kart man....except there is no turtle shells and boxes and stuff. Seriously though. This car handles great, it makes up for the lack of straightline power. I would way rather show off my car on a mountain pass than just down the street really fast. It shows more skill when you can control your car instead of saying "yeah man, I can shift and go straight!!"

The car doesn't handle like a wagon. It feels very nice. And it's also nice to be able to haul 9 cinder blocks, 2 LARGE boxes of nails, 6 bundles of shingles, 2-4ft ridge vents, and still have plenty of room. Except all that kind weighed the ass end down a bit. Kinda felt like a wagon when I was driving all that shit home :D

You are going to take ridicule as long as you drive a P5 for the wagon factor but the performance value beats out just about every sedan on the road (ie: civic, corola, etc)

rsj - check out the picture and video section of the board to see just what people have done to their cars. There is some tight shit on here that I never would have dreamed of.

Plus, you will be able to out slalom all the cars in this class and many others. Here's one for you, my P5 can keep up with my husband's Corvette thru the twisties, THAT's performance. It's like buttah. :D If you like handling go for this car and defend it to the end. I'm damn sure all your peers wouldn't have as tight a car as this, especially at your age. Also, just think of all the possiblities w/your friends. It can haul all your buddies and your gear and still look sharp for the ladies. Do it man, I hope you fall in love with it like the rest of us - you won't regret it. :D

Hi rsj and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. (stash)

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!! (stash)

the next time one of your family ask you WHY are you buying a wagon....politely tell them its not just a wagon...its a SPORT WAGON...and the sweetest import wagon on the road...not to mention the most reasonably priced considering its standard equipment, and that it handles better than cars that cost as much as five times as it does.....sure its not the quickest car on the road...but it damn sure will out handle most anything you will find with four wheels.

I don't care too much whether people call it a wagon or a hatchback. I like having the four doors and the hatch, which gives utility in addition to the great handling and style. Station wagons have long had a stigma attached to them, but that old generation of wagons is pretty much extinct. If you look at similar "wagons" out there today, plenty of them are rather awesome, sporty machines. After all, the WRX comes in wagon form, and don't forget the Audi Avant wagons. Just tell everybody that the new generation of wagons rules. (rockon)

I always got the impression that the young guys of the world liked hatch backs....They certainly do in my neck of the woods...Hate to say it but the Honda hatchback is very cool here...and now the P5 is too!

As in: "Ha ha! You can't even out-corner a station wagon!"

Yeah, what she said.

Like today I was driving back from the FedEx depot with my new racing beat catback in the back, and on the way to the on ramp this SUV is tailgating me, like i'm not driving fast enough. Well let's just say that after the long curve of the on-ramp I was way out in front of him!

heheh...i call it a sport wagon...all my life i grew up with my parents driving us around in an 87 oldsmobile station wagon...i vowed to never drive a station wagon and look at me today...ironic life is...

this is the perfect car for a young guy to have...especially since you're 18 and probably gonna be off to college...i was able to move most of my stuff in one car load (i had a lot)...it was cool cuz my car actually did look lowered...you can haul stuff and people easily...you definitely get more then what you pay for in this car...and NO it doesn't feel big or anything actually quite the opposite very nimble...

yes obviously its a little slow but hey it's an econo box not a sports car but it handles with the best of them...

08-29-2003, 11:37 PM
Reguardless of what you or others may call it, you have to ask yourself if the car fits your needs. If you are or are planning to be college bound you should consider the cargo space, there is plenty of room for dirty laundry and beer. Even as a poor college student you can still afford to put gas in the tank. It has a stylish deisgn and you don't see them everyday, girls will see you as someone who stands out from the crowd. Oh, and you can't fold down the seats and inflate and air mattres in the back of most sedans and sport coupes (tinted windows are advised).

Man, I dunno... This is definitly a wagon, but it handles like a nice, little sedan, IMO... The difference I noticed between the wagon and the sedan was the slightly tailhappy nature of the wagon, and with my guess, it's just due to the extra weight in the back, rather than the front, or somesuch... It's a fun car, for sure, and it's great to make fun of people who can't outhandle it. ;)

'Aw, gee? Why can't your Camaro keep up with my wagon in this corner?' As I push the throttle down a bit more, and listen to the tires squeal as I hit the edge of my cornering, come into the straightaway, and the monsterous musclecar passes me, but I get a nice scowl for my effort! ;)

Beemers get really pissed when you pass them, too, but the drivers of those are generally assholes, anyway, if you live anywhere near Boston. Hehee.

Drive it. You'll like it. =) I know I do!

Station wagons became minivans, minivans became SUV's Thus its the SUV's that suck and are for yuppy's (thumb)

The Protege is a go-cart, simply put. I drove my friend's 2001 Civic...uhh...doesnt compare at all handling-wise and the the brakes sucked!

bud_d
08-30-2003, 02:27 AM
Another note too, "wagons" are typically bigger. Hatches typically are shorter. The P5 is about ~3 inches shorter then the Protege Sedan, and handles better too!

p.s. You still can't out handle my car you P5 whores! :)(mj):)

yeah, that is so true about the civic. I drove my sisters civic tonight and man that thing feels like I am pulling a weight when i turn the wheel compared to when I whip around my steering wheel in the P5. I realized how cool the car was. although I seem to realize that everytime I drive it...one of the best points about the car.

u asked how much tinting cost, it cost me 220 for all windows (excluding winshield obviously) using the most expensive tint. and as far as it being a wagon, who cares what people say, you will be happy with it. i was in a similar situation, i am also young and had a limited budget, but after doing a lot of research into other cars i ultimately chose the mp5 because turboing it is not overly expensive, and it handles very well for being front heavy.

My friends made fun of me getting a wagon because wagons are old people and family cars. Then I mention I DO have a family and the car I traded in was a friggin GRAND MARQUIS!!!! The #1 old people car. :D In fact my last 3 cars were crown vics and grand marquis'. Besides it's a "sport" wagon (naughty)

tinting windows and aftermarket rims would go a long way to making it look less a wagon.

Anyone that talks shit about the P5 being a 'wagon' is bitter because their two door, Wal-mart Honda handles like a shopping cart, or because they're some Mullit-tard that thinks anything with less that eight cylinders is for "faggots".

Damn, I love my P5 and I come from a family of race car drivers.

I'm not sure where you live, but here in Canada it cost me $220 CAD to get the rear 7 windows tinted to 5% (and the job is guaranteed: it peels/fades/purples...I go back and get it done again).

There are also tonnes of fun ways to tweak your P5 as you've probably read on this site!

It's not a wagon. It's a SPORTS HATCHBACK. :D Personally I don't care what people call it. I have the satisfaction of knowing I have a sweet looking car that handles real good, and still have plenty of room to haul around the kids. Also this is one of the best cars I have owned for over-the-shoulder visability. No blind spots at all.

I'm 27, married w/ 2 kids. She's got all gray hair, she's definately 60+. 'Course I've got some gray myself... (sad1)

Personally I'd prefer a Country Squire or Colony Park, course it'd have a turbo'd 5.0L. I'm still kicking myself for not buying my friends Buick Roadmaster- LT-1 powered (burnout) But the P5 is more sporty and gets better milage-and a heck of a lot easier to park in DC!

Just an interesting sidenote to all of this. I pulled up right next to my sister's 2001 2.0 Golf --the P5's wheel base can't be more than 4 inches longer! For all intent and purpose the P5 is just slightly longer than the dubya, and slightly wider(between 4-6 inches according to the actual specs). But the VWs also seem to have more of a "bulldog" stance, the wheels are pushed out a bit more (sorry about the VW obsession, btw, everyone around me has one).

After visually comparing the two side by side I don't understand all this wagon talk from people--although it certainly gets enough of that comment. Is it the 5 doors, maybe? Is it an optical illusion? I don't get it!!!!!! :wtf:

In any case, I love my sport wagon :D

Hmm, I actually think it's "technically" a hatch. I remember something about a wagon having glass that was movable/retractable. I remember this because our Bronco and my sisters Blazer (both full size) were considered wagons because of the power window in the tailgate.

There was an article in C&D a while ago about the P5 having to keep up with a Lingenfelter Corvette. They said that they hung with it in the twisties.

Tis is the third wagon that I've owned and I'm proud to kick your ass in it. Mine just keep getting smaller and smaller. I went from a Buick Electra in HS to a Honda Accord Wagon a few years ago (with many many cars in between). I was ready to drop $29k on a Benz C-class coupe because I wanted a hatch for sure and at the time I wanted a Benz. Hatches are very cool and useful (e.g. Supras, RX-7's, 300Z's, etc.).

The P5 is hard to classify. They don't know whether to call it a wagon or a hatchback. I call it a sport wagon.

If you wonder how it handles, just go test drive it.
