$2 for the oil drain plug washer?!

I was doing my first oil change for my car this past weekend. So I went to the stealership to get couple washer. I can't believe they charge $2.00 for a washer :wtf: For all the cars my family/friends has ever own, from Honda, Acura, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes....none charged $2.00 for a washer. The Honda dealer would even just give me the washers for free.

I ended up not getting one and just flipped the washer. What's up with the washer? For that price I better be getting a gold plated one.

LOL....When I had my Protege I got a pack of 5 washers for less than $2 bucks. Try a different stealership.

I never have changed that washer either -- never any problems (except for the 1 time that I left it in the drained oil and forgot to put it back on before filling it back up). Besides losing it, I don't see why you'd ever need another one.

It is a crush washer and is not designed to be used over and over. You may never have a problem if you don't change it, but you might have a little bit of oil drippage around the drain plug in between changes. IMHO it's a good preventative part to change.

Damn mazdadan u beat me to it!:p I was going to say is it a crushed washer because on my previous car (Subaru) had a crushed was on the drain plug. It's a washer w/ waves in it. Your supposed to change that out during every oil change, but you can get away with it once by flipping it over but I wouldn't recommend using it anymore after that. If you keep re-using it, it will leak.

Mazda Part # is 9956-41-400 for a pack of 5. That is the only way most dealers sell them.

Yup they charge me 2 bucks on any washer I buy for any car at the Mazda dealership. So I told them where they can put that washer.

YOu can buy a freaking box of these things at a home improvement store for a couple bucks.
You can also switch to a silicone or urethane washer which will not leak, and does not need to be changed. Also, for weenies like me, less heat is transferred to the nut which means you can actually touch it during hot-oil changes (if you change hot).

Yeah, I'll be changing my washer for the 1st time because when I was in San Antonio, some bone-head at Jiffy lube over-tightened it. :mad: I usually do my own changes, but since I was in San Antonio, I didn't have the facilities to do so.

Huh? My 2000 ES had a LOCK washer on it and I think that my MSP has the same lock washer. I could be wrong because I've only changed oil once on the MSP..........(dunno) don't know....guess I'll have to pay more attention to it next time I change oil. I think I would have noticed a wavy washer on it though.....ah well, like someone else said - just go get a box of them at your local hardware store.

never paid attention to the washer,lol i change my oil every 3k miles, never changed the washer and i have 24k on the clock. thats 8 changes, damn ive only had the car a year and a half!

I was thinking of wrong washer! I don't how ours looks but the crushed washers I've seen look likes this (from my old subaru ignore the part number). No waves to surf on. Sorry I was tired last night I just caught myself today.

any 14mm washer should do.
