View Full Version : Gas Leak

Went to the local gas station today to try some high test gas (93 octane). No really reason for it but wanted to try it for the next several gas tanks on a fresh oil change (first one) to see if MPG improves any. As you know the gas tank holds 14.5 and the 1/4 tank mark is approximately 2.5-3 gallons remaining.

I go in side to get a drink at the convenience store and I see a guy jumping and screaming pointing at my car. Mind went blank... as I run to the car and notice it still pumping gas.

The counter reads 17.4 gallons pumped and I had a 1/4 tank when I pulled up. So it pumped 6 gallons of unwanted, premium gas all over me the car, the ground and covering my pants/shoes as I struggled to get it away from the vehicle.

I had just washed, waxed and detailed my car.

So I go storming over to the gas attendant screaming every possible obscenity in the English language and Spanish language (to ensure he got the message). His response:

"Sorry buddy, at least the car didn't blow up."

Blow up? We'd all be dead in 500ft+ radius if my car blew up. I intend to write a letter to corporate and file a complaint and demand compensation. However, I realize it'll fall on deaf ears.

So who's fault was the spill? The gas pump or my car?

The pumps here in Canada, or at least Victoria, do not have a locking device to keep the gas flowing while you are away. You have to keep squeezing the lever in order for the gas to flow. Probably a good safety measure.

So if I told you that this gas station did not have a signed posted, would I still call you ignorant... no. Careful when you use strong words like "every."

In NJ (for those clueless) it is illegal to pump your own gas. So me leaving my car unattended is a force of habit. However, the incident was in DC and this gas station did not have any signs posted.

While I thank those that responded, not one person could answer me correctly... gas pump's fault or the car's fault.

I had engaged the little nub that keeps the throttle on the nozzle depressed but every other time I've ever had to pump my gas it's disengaged before "topping it off." This time it did not...

So, is this a car issue or a pump defect?

To me, I think that is a pump defect... since I've never had a car spill gas when using the knob thingie... I know what you mean about illegal pumping in NJ, but I'm in PA, and there's very few full service stations. It's hard to say though...

I agree...pumps fault not the P5

Ya, that's what I had figured. All the more reason to write a letter. While I didn't run into problems those 6 or so gallons of fuel could cause one if they don't evaporate quickly.
