I can not post a new thread in the "How-To" section so someone please move it
After carefully reverse engineering, testing, and verifying. I figured out a way to disable the DRL’s and to have the fog lights on without the headlights.
If you don’t want to read a long winded explanation of how and why I did the mod skip to the procedure.
For the fog lights to work independently from the headlights you need to separate the switch from the DRL module, and supply power to the fog light relay from the parking lights. Why from the parking lights? So you don’t forget that you have them turned on.
There was no real easy way to eliminate the DRL module completely without some major hacking. Also it’s a good thing to have on the car and my way makes it for easy reversal of the mod. Since I’m not eliminating the DRL module I decided to have a switch to just turn the DRL’s off. I’ve heard of people driving around with the e-brake up one notch to turn off the DRL’s. That’s not a good thing, for one you will wear out the rear brake pads prematurely and secondly you have the brake warning light on the dashboard. This light tells you if you have a problem with your braking system. So having it on all the time is not good either. So I looked into the electronics of the DRL module. Basically the e-brake and the low brake fluid warning switches are connected to each other via the DRL module.

NOTE: The wire colors are "solid color/stripe" if there is one color then there is no stripe.
1. Find the Fog Light relay. Located in the drivers side foot well. Look up.
2. Using the 10mm deep socket unbolt the two bolts holding on the DRL, FOG light and other stuff up there.
3. On the FOG LIGHT RELAY cut RED wire about 2” from connector.
4. Crimp a male butt connector on the connector side, and crimp a female butt connector on the harness side.
5. Take a length of wire about 3’ and crimp a female butt connector on one end.
6. Plug the new wire into the RED wire you just cut with the male connector on it.
7. Label the free end of this wire as FOG LIGHT RELAY.
8. Find the DRL module. Again located in the drivers side foot well. Look up.
9. Unplug the 2 harnesses. You only need to modify the small harness with 7 wires in it.
10. Cut the YELLOW/GREEN wire about 2” from the connector.
11. Crimp a male butt connector on the connector side, and crimp a female butt connector on the harness side.
12. Cut the BLUE/ORANGE wire about 2” from the connector.
13. Crimp a female butt connector on the connector side, and crimp a male butt connector on the harness side.
14. Plug wire YELLOW/GREEN into wire BLUE/ORANGE on the harness side.
15. Take another length of wire about 3’ and crimp a female butt connector on one end.
16. Plug the new wire into wire YELLOW/GREEN on the connector side.
17. Label free end of this wire as DRL OFF.
18. Run both wires up the wire harness and secure with tie wraps.
19. Remove the cover on the side of the dashboard to expose fog light switch.
20. Run the free wires along the harness and into the area of the foglight switch. Use tie wraps to secure.
21. Find a suitable location for the SPST switch. ( I used the empty switch plate)
22. Terminate the free wire labeled DRL OFF to one side of the switch.
23. Terminate another length of wire to the other side of the switch.
24. Label this new wire as GROUND.
25. Unplug the fog light switch harness.
26. Cut RED/WHITE wire about 2” from connector.
27. Crimp a male butt connector on the connector side, and crimp a female butt connector on the harness side. (ignore my picture I put the connectors on the wrong side)
28. Take a length of wire about 1’ and crimp a female butt connector on one end.
29. Label the other end GROUND.
30. Connect the new wire to the connector side. Leave the other end free for now.
31. Splice the wire labeled FOG LIGHT RELAY into the LIGHT GREEN/BLACK wire.
32. Find a good ground location.
33. Take both free wires labeled GROUND and terminate them with a ring lug.
34. Remove the bolt. Put the ring lug over the stud. Fasten the bolt back on.
35. Double check all connections are solid.
36. Plug the harnesses back into the switches.

DONE! Bumble G, YOU DA MAN. I give you props in my sig. Took 2 hours, recommended for all who want an easy mod that changes your look a bit.
As for what it allows you to do Initial:
Any combination of lights is possible. One restriction, parking lights must be on. So:
- Parking Only
- Parking + Fogs
- Parking + Fogs + Headlights

okay...how you said that if you wired the fogs a certain way they would be on all the time and people would forget about them...dead battery, etc....why not just have the ignition as the main power wire? so you can have the fogs on anytime the ignition is on...i dont know, just something i was thinking about...im going to try to see if i can think of how to do that...i mean, basically it just has to be hooked up to a switch and a power and youre in...
bumble g??? try that maybe?

RED wire from Fog Light Module on the harness side, and the RED/WHITE wire from the Fog Light Switch on the harness side?

Just finished the mod, and wanted to say thanks to Bumble G for the write-up! It weas pretty simple and easy, but it's hard splicing wires, etc in those tight spaces. Finally I can have the fogs on with the high beams! The only problem I ran into though is that after turning the key to on, the parking brake light only illuminates for a second, then goes out even if the E-brake is on. Will it stillilluminate if a low fluid level exists? I was hoping that it would still alert me if the brake was still applied too. Is anyone else having this problem?

Also just finished this mod. I opted to wire the fogs on the Accessory power, so I don't have to drive around with my parking lights on all the time. Also chose to bypass the switch for the DRL and just ground it out. I don't intend to use them ever again.
Looks sweet with my new yellow fogs, too.
Thanks!

Sweet man. I didn't use a switch for the DRL's either. I jsut grounded them out too. But I meant to ask, does your e-brake light work as it's supposed to? Mine turns off 3 seconds after starting the car even if the brake is on... Yours?

Ya, I talked to Josh (Net_Guy) yesterday, and he showed me his car. The E-brake light on his car after the mod works as it's supposed to. I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I wouldn't mind it being fixed.

I have no clue on a fix...I'm pretty bad when it comes to electrical stuff. It's not really a big deal though, as long as the light works as intended with regards to problems with the brake system (brake wear or whatever it is). But if anyone comes up with a fix it would be much appreciated.

I'll wait for spring to come back before doing the mod since I have no garage to work on the car but I'd sure be interested to know by then if anyone else did it and how it turned out...
As of now it works fine for 2 people and 2 other people encountered a problem...
I say we need a tie breaker! (scratch)

HiKsFiles, the mod works perfectly fine, looks good, the only problem is that the parking brake light doesn't come on when the brake is on. I doubt that will be a problem, as it's pretty easy to tell when the brake is on, and I figure it's routine for most people, if you put the brake on when you leave the car, you'll automatically just reach to put it back down when you need to drive...not a problem at all, for me at least.

fvellani,
I don't mind at all the e-brake light disappearring after a few seconds...
I'm only afraid this will screw up my remote starter since it reads the e-brake status before allowing or not the car to start remotely (manual tranny).
I guess I should rephrase my question for : anyone did this mod with a manual tranny car having a remote starter kit installed?
Thanx again,

I wouldn't mind the fact that there was no light when the e-brake was on. But, I DO want to know if I ever run low on brake fluid (that light is used for a low fluid warning as well). That's the reason some people are a little hesitant to do this mod. BTW, I just picked up a factory service manual so maybe I'll look into a way around this problem if I get some time. I'm not driving my car now (it's in storage until spring) so I will probably get a chance to try some things out.

Hi guys,
I just want to disable my drl, so before I hack wires, I just want to double check. So I would just cust the yellow/green wire, and the blue/orange wire and connect the two wires on the harness, thus bypassing the connector? Is this right? Thanks!!

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but I'll take a stab.
The original how-to, first post in the thread, is a 2 step process. First, you re-wire the foglights to come on with the parking lights, as opposed to the headlights. Then you re-wire the DRLs to use a switch that you put in, rather than using the ebrake on/off as a switch.
So before the rewiring, your lights are as follows, with the ebrake off (e.g. you're driving around)
1. Light switch off: DRLs are on
-foglights cannot go on
-highbeams go on if you pull the lever back
2. Light switch in the middle: parking lights are on
-foglights cannot go on
-headlights go on if you pull the lever back
3. Light switch at the end: headlights are on
-foglights CAN be turned on/off by the OEM switch
-highbeams go on if you pull the lever back or push it forward
After you rewire, as described by the first post:
1. Light switch off: No lights
-DRLs can be turned on/off by the new switch wired in
-fogs cannot go on
-highbeams go on by pulling the lever back
2. Light switch in the middle: parking lights on
-DRLs can be turned on/off by the new switch
-foglights can be turned on/off by the OEM switch
-highbeams go on if you pull the lever back
3. Light switch at the end: headlights on
-DRLs obviously aren't in play
-foglights can be turned on/off by the OEM switch
-highbeams go on by pulling or pushing the lever
Because the DRLs are the same bulb as the regular headlights (running at a lower output), there is obviously no way to turn both the headlights and DRLs on.
The highbeams will go on momentarily if you pull the lever back, and will stay on if you push the lever forward. Obviously, driving around with your highbeams on 24/7 is a good way to cause an accident and piss off everyone around you.
Sorry for the long-winded reply, and sorry if I didn't really answer your question.

Thanx for the help guys
nice how to. i need to do something like this soon.. very soon. (me p5 btw)
I'd like it slightly different though. Is there any way to get it so that:
1. Fogs are DRL's (by themselvs - ie: no parking lights)
2. HID's can be switched on with regular "lights on" position on stalk
3. Fogs can be switched on or off with the fog light switch
4. High-beams still available.
can anyone of you guru's tell me if this is possible? (or possible with this particular mod?)

Just hook your fogs up indipendently and you'l lget what you want. Then youcan ust run them and no drl's (but you have to press the switch)
thanks for the how-to, bumble G. it works. i didn't put in a switch for the drl's, but i will figure that out another day. all in all it works fine :) (oh and my ebrake light still comes on - just so those few of you who had a problem know)

Is there a way to just disable the DRL as in this Mazda6 how-to? I don't want to go through the trouble of routing my DRL module to my fogs, but I just wanna get rid of my DRLs to avoid flickering my HIDs.

Hey I installed my fog lights seperate from my headlights and just ran a switch into my car. It worked fine for me but you just have to remeber to turn them off because theres no beep for them, and I guess you have to have your parking lights on if your fogs are on? My lights are also pointed too low and I couldnt seem to adjust them, anyone know how? Thanks.

Ok well I figured out what my problem was it had to do with my alarm wires. Anyways if someone is looking to run the fogs without turning on the parking lights then you can run the cut red wire to the thick blue ignition wire instead of the light green/black wire. You can also use the black/red wire which is for accessories but I don't want to run the fogs if I listen to the radio with the car off.

The purpose of this thread is turning off the DRL (the lights that turn on when you lower your handbrake) and be able to turn on the fog lights without turning the headlight switch on.
Therefore if you have a stock protege by pressing the fog light switch during the day your fog lights will not go on unless the headlights switch has been turned on.

I've done the mod and thanks Bumble G it looks so sweet! I've only got one question, what is the new switch supposed to do? Because I can't figure out the difference either it's on or off, maybe I missed something...? I didn't start the car though, just tought about that

Bit of an outdated thread but....
I've followed every bit of the instructions and my fogs don't seem to be working? I've gone over the wiring again and again and I can't seem to find any mistakes. Any ideas?

Yes, this tread is old but let's face it: our cars too now... I just did this mod today and everything is awesome. Everything seems to work fine: brake warning light, fog, DRL (no more).
I took time to print the first pages of this How-to and the two schematics (Before & After). I did everything exactly like the plan said and, Boy, Bumble G did a great job! To make things easier, I also took out the driver seat (4x15mm bolts and a fun connector) and the center console (6 screws and the shifter knob). I was lying on my back inside my car, now let's talk about easy access!
I've also included some over-exposed pictures about the principal units we're talking about here.
Here (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2520378580082908832XAmUkJ) you have the link for the driver side foot well, looking up. You can see what a DRL module looks like and what a Fog Switch Relay is.
Here (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2936070900082908832WLZkcq), you'll see the access point to get to the back of the fog switch. The connector is the blue one. Also easily accessible.
Here (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2056908410082908832rUoOwX) , you'll see where i install my DRL switch. This switch is used to re-activate the old DRL system, Remember that Bumble G did a great job creating this how-to and making it completly reversible.
I took the freedom of modding the mod. I wanted to have full control over my fogs and i wanted them to turn off when the car is turn off too (why not!) so instead of splicing the wire named Fog Light Relay into the LIGHT GREEN/BLACK (as seen on no. 31 of Bumble G's masterpiece), I splice that wire way over to the BLACK/WHITE wire of the cigarette lighter. Since the lighter is activated when you turn the ignition to accessories, I tought it was a perfect location to activate my Fog Switch Relay. This is why I removed the center console. If you took 3 feet of wire to create the Fog Light Relay wire as said on no. 5, than it should be enough to reach the lighter or, for example, the fan switch. My guess is: For the new no. 31, you want an automatic output of 12 v when the car is turn on. So feel free to explore like I did.
This way, with the new SPST switch installed, you'll have total control over all your lights! (yes).
Here's a list for the visual ones:
OEM DRL only
Parking lights only
Normal lights only (this includes parking lights)
High beam only (this includes parking lights and normal lights)
fogs only
OEM DRL + parking lights
OEM DRL + Fogs
fogs + parking lights (this is what the original no. 31 gives you)
fogs + normal lights (this includes parking lights)
fogs + High beam (this includes parking lights and normal lights)
Hell, I'm not sure that list helps...
Good luck.

Yes, more or less. Did you resolve your problem?

You can use the thick blue ignition wire which has power all the time or the red/black wire which is the accessory power wire. I wired mine to the blue ignition wire so my fogs are completely independant.

I've found 2 red/black wires. One is coming from the DRL Module and the other is coming out of the module beside the Fog Light Relay. Does it matter which Red/Black wire?

Found out that the Module beside the fog light relay is an unknown. And the Red/Black wire coming from it didn't have any voltage at all. So I spliced the Red wire from the fog light relay to the Orange wire from the Flasher module. I just need to remember to turn the fogs off and on when getting in and out of the car.

question about step 14... am i connecting them together? both male and female from the harness side or what?
and if so then what happens the the blue/orange from the connector side? that doesnt get connected anywhere?
please and thank you
NOTE: The wire colors are "solid color/stripe" if there is one color then there is no stripe.
