View Full Version : Whine while idle?

Alright, as many of you know, I have the worst luck with this great little orange econobox. New thing starting happening now. When the car is idle and in neutral, there's a whine under the hood. If the accelerator is pushed down at all, the whine stops and it sounds fine. I've opened the hood and it sounds like it's coming from the turbo housing itself. Any ideas?
I'm taking the car in to a new dealership tomorrow to replace the broken I/C pipe and thought I'd see if I should have that checked in to.

I AM a newbie, but I'd like to put my .02 in...
Does the extra whine happen ALL of the time, or if you're idling, will it come in sporadically?
I noticed that when idling, the 2nd radiator fan will spin up every so often...could that be the source of the whine?
Just trying to apply Achim's razor to the problem. :)

Thanks for the help, but it does sound like it's coming from the turbo housing. The turbo still kicks in without a problem, so despite JDM Sam's opinion, I believe it's fine.. I'll let them know about that when I take it in for the replacement of the I/C pipe. We'll see what they say. I do no they can't say it's an "Operational characteristic of the car" this time..

It should barely be turning at idle, which probably means it isn'tthe turbo.
Mine whines at idle too, just like you are describing. I would have described the sound as a very soft whistle.
I would have guessed a very small vacuum leak, or the car is just whistling along happily. Nothing has happened as a result of whatever it is, so I'm happy leaving everything at "status quo".
It doesn't do it nearly as often anymore though, more when the car was new. I've got 10000 kms on the clock now and I don't recall hearing the sound recently.

It didn't do this before the I/C pipe split, it was quiet. Along with the noise from the A/C compressor, my car is starting to sound like a econobox rather than a tuned sports car.. I'm not liking it.

i dunno, but the two may be related... have the dealer take a look though.

anyways mine does the same thing even with the aftermarket stuff i have the one in the back is the fuel pump but noticed that the one under the hood is caused by a melted fan shroud dunno how far the factory turbo setup sits from that fan but mines melted from the exhaust housing from the turbo just a idea.....GL clay(k) (k) (k) (k) (k) (k)

I have noticed the same whine in my MP3. When sitting still at idle I can hear it at times... I thought I heard it more when I had the AC on as well but I haven't listened again recently, but then again I almost always have some music playing and I'm generally concentrating on that. Good luck with finding out what this is, I'd be curious to know. It goes away once I give it some gas *shrug*
