Hey guys and girls,

I just got a quick question, how much different is the '01 2.0L engine from the '00 1.8L engine? Besides the obvious displacement increase.

The reason I'm asking is that this site mainly deals with the 2.0 ES/MP3 engine and I'm hoping some of the stuff you guys mention would apply to my 1.8L.

Thanks alot :)

Some of the things do apply to the 1.8L such as cam's, exhaust, and intake manifold. The main difference is the ignition system. I believe the 1.8L still uses a distributor where our cars are all elec.
One other difference is the intake CAI systems. The 2.0 and 1.8 are different there as well. Other than that you can use most of the 2.0 parts on the 1.8.

Actually the 1.8L in the 3rd Gen is the exact smae as the 2.0L just the 1.8L is a destroked version of the 2.0L it is DIS our coil packs are just located in a different position than the 2.0L If I remember right the only difference is the Crank. The CAI will work on the 1.8l that is made for the 2.0

This has also kinda annoyed me, because it seems like all Protege boards (except www.protegeclub.com) are geared towards either the 2.0/MP3, or nothing else.

I have a '99 1.8l, which is manual, and I've driven a 2.0l as well. I find the 1.8 is much faster from take off.

I did some research and the pistons are much shorter, so there is faster acceleration with the 1.8l.

I bought a Ractive intake system, that was designed for the 2002 2.0l. After a LITTLE custom work, I got it to fit in my 1.8l. I guess the biggest difference was the size of the engine bay, which seems a LITTLE smaller in the '99.

The factory airbox all of the 3rd gen Pro's are the same, including the P5's.

The engine bays are teh same size its just that the 2.0's are shifted slightly to the passengers side to accomidate teh G series tranny.

Also the size of the headlight casing is much smaller. The intake was touching that slightly.

I find it hard to believe that the 1.8l acceleartes faster than the 2.0L.

Not really if you think about it they are geared different, the 1.8L came with 15" wheels instead of 16" and also teh 1.8L has a shorter stroke thus quicker revs...

Just as chdesign said. Although I don't have the stock tires, I have CSA 15"s on my car, and it moves. I know another guy where I live who has a '01 2.0l, and even he says my car is faster from take off.

I think the 1.8l protege's are quicker on the start cause there geared different and alot lighter. I know the 97-99ES protege 5-spd manual can do:
0-60: 8.4sec or less
1/4mile: n/a but guess wise i say 16-3-16.6sec
Topspeed 125mph

What the Fastest anyone who has taken there ES protege up to. Do any of you have a governer or can you achieve 125mph??????:)

I don't have any proof, but hopefully my word means enough, but the fastest I've taken my pro is 175km/h... leme say that was pretty damn fast... I wouldn't go any faster, unless I was FAR FAR out of the city...

So in MPH, that's about 110mph that's pretty darn fast though. Seeing that it's only a 1.6l DOHC 16-valve.

it certainly will....the engine will rev up quicker...a short stroke motor will ALWAYS rev up quicker than a longer stroke motor will...the longer stroke will USUALLY develope more torque...but the shorter will rev up quicker...the reason? ROTATING MASS....simply put.....the rotating and reciprocating part of your motor weighs less....thus it can and will spin up faster...which when coupled to the correct set of gears...means a quicker car...even IF the motor is smaller.

do you remember or have you ever heard of the 302 c.i. CHEVY motor? it came in a late 60's camero....had the numbers on the hood in RED WHITE AND BLUE....it was nothing more than a DESTROKED 327.....but would rev like lightning!!!

another case in point....I have a freind that has a drag car...its a 70's VEGA...it has a 350 in it and is really quick....its stripped out and set up for the strip....anyway....his daily driver is a VW BUG..and not one of these new things...I am talking a 1970 VW Beetle....(I am bug nut as well :{D) anyway....these things only have a 60 HP motor...so you can imagine how they must be geared.....he will race ANYONE in his bug...and let THEM drive his drag car....and put ANYTHING on the line.....for 10 feet..lol....and he will kick your ass EVERYTIME too. if you have the proper gearing and the motor to get you moving....you can be VERY quick. even if its for only a little while!

I have a 99 Protege LX (a canadian car) its a 1.8L 5spd manual. The fastest that I have ever taken the car is 205 Km/h (127 mph), The tachnometer was at 5100 RPM and I was running my winter tires. Aside from a K&N Filter and 91 Octane my car is bone stock.

Apparently these cars are supposed to cut out at 180 kph (110mph) but I think there were a few early batches (like mine) that were sold in late 1998 and probably werent required by law to have the cut out. Anyone else ever gone faster then me in a 1.8?
