do you guys hear a noise, almost like an airplane engine getting ready, as the rpms increase in reverse? when i press the clutch, i can sorta hear it too.

is this normal?

I only notice it coming out of my driveway. It's on a little hill. I figured that was it because i never hear it any other time.

i think it also depends in how long you have been in reverse, because if it is short you for sure wont hear it because the exhaust will be heard..but if it is longer the exhaust will die down and you can hear it. i guess its normal then. i thought it was because one day on the freeway, i accidentally almost slipped it into reverse. of course as soon as i heard the grinding i stopped, but yeah.

if it's a high pitch whiny noise than it's normal. In all my exp either driving or riding in a manual car it always have that noise when in reverse.

some autos do the same thing
just the layout of the tranny makes the manual ones louder

ok good. but about those couple of times i shifted reverse while the car was moving, it wont destroy anything right? heh.

i tried to do that move Paul Waker did in 2fast 2 furious in his Lancer Evolution 8 on the freeway where he spun around and started going in reverse My tranny made a weird noise at that time till it dropped out of the car

I think every import does that. My Hondas did the same thing.

My girlfriend thinks my car sounds like a remote controlled car when it does that...

i beleive it happens because the gear is cut straight while all the forward gears are cut at angles. this is done because the reverse gear is not always in contact with all other gears and needs to be moved into place, requiring the teeth to be cut straight rather than at an angle.

and autos have the weirdest gearbox EVAR, youve got to learn your astronomy to get them... :D its pretty amazing.you shouldnt count on anything acting or being the same. manuals are so damn simple if you compare.

ok guys and girls the reason reverse sounds like that is it is a strait cut gear. Now do you know the difference? Normal trannies the teeth from the foward gears dont come strait out of the spline they r curved at an angle, looks like the kind of lay down. Now strait cut gears come strait out of the spline. Imagine a regular gear, thats what a strait cut one looks like. Strait Cut gears r a whole lot stronger because they dont put stress on the teeth of the gears like normal ones do, all the stress is on the spline which is alot stronger. They Just r really Loud! trust me my friend has a dogbox in his WRX with all straitcut gears! sounds like GT3 cars lol! that now includes our lesson on trannies lol JK!

as far as it not being in contact that has nothing to do with it! reverse does not have a synchro so it needs to be tough to handle the abuse it will indure

straight gears create a stronger connection, not stronger in themselves, as it should put more stress on the teeth since only 1 tooth is engaged at a time, where in helical gears there are 2 or 3 in contact at one time.

price is also a factor, straight gears are cheap, and easy to put into gear. a reverse helical gear would need synchros... which adds to the cost.

Just a quick note: you'll notice that whine on an automatic Honda because their auto trannies are very similar to a manual tranny, and their reverse gears are straight-cut (dog). Honda autos are hydraulically actuated gears on shafts, while most other autos use planetary gearsets.

If I am not mistaken it was an Evo VII. I thought that they didn't want the Evo VIII to be seen during the filming of the movie.

Please correct me if Im wrong.
