I paid $19950 for my Protege5. The top of the line model with side airbags/tinted windows at dealership. HOT RED baby.. Zoom Zoom Zoom Love it's unique styling and trendiness. :-)

$16995, for 5 sp w/ ABS, side airbags, moonroof, and floor mats.

It was one of those "one at this price" ads in the newspaper, but it had the exact options I wanted. Only drawback was the color (black), which was not my first choice.

I paid $18000 (plus tax) for my P5 with moonroof, ABS/side, polished wheels, mats, 5speed. That includes the $480 destination charge. They drove it up to my door, too. Of course, if you pay the destination charge, they had better at least do that and take care of all the paperwork at your house! I didn't have to do a single thing except sign for it. 5 speeds are really hard to get in Southern California.

i paid a pretty good price for my p5 as well.

keep in mind this is in canadian dollars but for 21600 list (i paid 25500 out the door or about 16500 american) i got yellow with a/c and power moonroof, 5/speed. in canada all abs/airbags etc... come standard. the only options are a/c, moonroof, and automatic t/m( although who would opt for it if you don't have to) all else is standard. up here we don't have the chromed rims which is too bad.

all in all a great car for the money

In June, I paid $16,500. It's nice having friends in the automotive business. BUT, I also heard of some Mazda dealers offering $500 over invoice. Might just be local here in Seattle.

11-10-2001, 03:23 AM
I paid 17000 OTD (out the door) manual, black, tapedeck, rugs, no moonroof :(

did I mention the damn thing is tornado damaged (actually its not too bad, just a bunch of sratches on the windshied) and I live in arlington va where everything costs x4 for some reason...
hey atleast I get an idea of how much i got ripped off....

I paid $18,600 for mine.....5 speed, moonroof, abs/sideairbags.

maybe you guys in northern states should look into purchasing in canada.....we pay max sticker of around $21,000 CDN dollars here....that's about $14-15,000 US.....just a thought...

Problem: Buying a car in Canada and then registering it in the US loses the warranty. I'd rather spend the 2 grand. Besides, the speedo would read KM's, and our roof rack looks much nicer, and is standard. HOWEVER, if you don't give a damn about these, then $2000.......

roswel
11-13-2001, 02:07 AM
although buying the car in canada would result in a speedo in km's and quite possibly voiding the warranty (don't know to much about that kind of thing) the "standard roof rack" you get in the states would be no big loss. it may look half decent but it's completely useless. although pricey the thule rack with mazda towers that incidently fit the existing mounting holes with a ski and bike module and deflector looks way cooler than any other rack i have seen. but like i said pricey ($600 cdn).

if i had any idea how to put up a picture i would show you.

I got my White P5 for $16,500 Out the door. Moonroof, ABS/side airbags, 5spd. They threw in 5 year/100,000 mile warranty and free maintenance for the year. Although I should also say that I was able to get a discount through my company's partnership with Ford...heh. I even got the College grad program so I don't pay for 6 months and get $400 cash I appropriately used towards the down payment. I bought it Sept 14th and I have 5300 miles already...eek. My car is getting the Oil changed today and I got a speeding ticket in the Mazda Loaner car...haha :D :D

I have to agree with Roswel on this one, but the roof rack is no big loss! It's so ugly! i hear a lot of ppl in the states are trying to get rid of it. btw, roswel, wouldn't WHITE be an awesome colour to have in Canada?

i agree white would be pretty slick but the option i would like are the chromed rims...now that would look sick with my yellow. there is a yellow p5 like mine in my area but with powder coated yellow rims...what a disgrace the yellow doesn't even match and it came like that from the dealer. it looks stupid if you ask me.

My fiance and myself are looking to get a protege5. What's the best way to get a good deal on one? 16K would be great. The lowest I've gotten a dealer to go so far is $16,8.

That's with:
ABS
Moonroof
floormats
cargo net
moonroof deflector

Tom,

Are you causing trouble the the CT Police Dept again? Remember speeding is bad. Just kinding, I really have alot of fun pushing my car. Now if I can just wait out the springs I'll be happy.

Just curious, did anybody get the dealers to throw anything in extra? Not sure how it goes with relatively high demand cars like this, but dealers have to at least show they appreciate your business, i figure.

Mike,
I can't help but cause trouble. I admit it was much easier in my the Talon tsi. I went 2 years without a speeding ticket, then I got three in Maine in a 4 month span this summer! Now I get one in the Mazda loaner car, must be losing my touch! Good thing is I sold my problem child (talon). Some kid brought 2500 in cash yesterday, what do you think the Mazda dealer would have given me for it with a busted cv joint and a bent up fender? haha....yeah that's what I thought. I actually made money off of that Talon from selling it and the insurance check I got from that ladies a$$hole insurance company. I think I'm going to start my own defensive driver course. The first thing I'll do is show people how to stop at intersections and use that little column lever called the BLINKER!

Thomas A. - I sold my Talon AWD a few months ago. I couldn't stand to keep repairing the transmission in it. 5K AWD launches are apparently BAD... :-)
Fortunately, I still have a '89 Mirage Turbo that's making about 220hp, so I still get my boost fix when I need it. ;-)

Damn, I'm gettin slammed over a roof rack. Some of us actually use it, and I wouldn't have wanted to pay extra for one that looks WORSE than the one on the US version. Since I do use it on occasion, it's nice to know that I can put it on, and still look acceptable, and then take it off when not needed, and it didn't cost me any extra. That's all I meant. It's all personal preference anyway. ;)

I'm waiting for the first cold spurt and I'm up in the mountains. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. The roof rack won't come off this winter while I'm snowboarding. I'll deal with the whistle.

Protege5chick,

I snowboard. Was locally sponsored by a shop, now I just kinda help out for the discounts. Kinda like what I'm doing for the extra's to the car.

Most evey car made in the last 10-15 years has a recommended oil change interval of 7500 miles. the last three I have bought all have said this int eh manual. The 3000 mile rule is only for very heavy engine load conditions, ie: racing, constantly high heat temperatures, serve cold weather year round adn the like.

w00tw00t i win ;)
taking mine on first real road trip tommorrow. i seem to remember the dealer saying something about tire rotations every 1k miles, might have been 5k.

sttl013
01-25-2002, 11:57 AM
Tire rotations every 1000 miles? seems a little much. Wouldn't hurt anything, just more work than necessary. I go by the schedule every other oil change. I usually try to get oil changes at 3000 miles, even though it's not recommended until 7500 unless under high stress conditions. So rotating about every 6000 miles usually turns out fine, about 2-3 times a year.
The only drawback I can see doing it every 1000 miles would be the stress on the lugs coming off and and going on all the time, but that's really looking for something wrong. ;)

what's your point?? Don't quite understand. Sticker price on my P5 was like 17000 or so. It has a moonroof, cassette, mats, 5sp, paint protection, and 7/100,000 warranty. Not quite sure of the exact dollar amount of the sticker. However, I told the dealer that the only way I would buy the car is if I drove home financing the sticker price. Gave me a grand for the trade, so that brings the total to 16000, add in the price for the warranty and paint, plus tax, etc. ... I only paid like 300-500 over invoice(i know there are several invoice prices, no bashing please). Told him I wasn't paying for a cassette, since I waited for the car for 2 months, and that was all he could get, and I absolutely refused to pay them for $80 floormats(which they gave me)that are made in Bangladesh for a bowl of rice. Please, I have had my experiences with car dealers b4, and have been burned. I swore to myself never to be taken advantage of again. I probably paid, without counting in warranty, tax, and trade, about 16000, plus I got 5.9% which was good considering my outstanding college loans.

hum well then arizona must just be expensive because when the first came out here i didnt know one person who got a mp5 for less the 18,000 infact i know some people who paid almost 20,000 or higher because somany peeps wanted them............i got mine with the whole deal also except for moonroof because i didnt want one..... and mine came out after takes and waranties and registration fees and stuff it came to almost 18,800 for mine................... :(... also i am just saying that with out that tradein you would be where i am at 18 because you said you got a grand for it .........thats all i aint baggin on ya homie just saying some of these guys are like i got it cheap yeah not that cheap the sticke anywhere isn't less than 16 so if they are getting it just over 16 or under 17 they either traded in or put money down.......... plus this was my first car i have ever bought..........

I know you aren't baggin on me(lol, I have no idea what that means except for out of context). And really wouldn't care if you were, it would take a lot more than saying I didn't pay what I paid for my car. However, Let me simplify my previous statement in saying that when we sat down to do the #'s, we worked backwards to get the out the door price to be the sticker price. You have to realize also that in the beginning, dealers were trying to make money off the demand, but I told one dealer, who didn't get my business, that he was selling a 4cyl. station wagon, and to have a reality check. When the gave me the first quote, it was somewhere in the 19-20k range. I laughed and asked him, and I quote "Is that in fucking YEN? Cause that ain't American dollars!" He told me it was a hot item, and I told him that his hot item will sit on the lot forever at that price. He also told me I couldn't find one on the East Coast cheaper. So when I bought mine @ 17,500 OTD, I drove to that dealer that day in my new car, showed him the sales slip, and made him feel like an ass. We all payed about the same for our cars, couple hundred more or less across the board, in some instances, some got burnt for thousands for yellow paint(which has no surcharge,BTW). But when they first come out, you see it on TV or the first one shows up on the lot, you have to be careful. When they see young (I'm 23) guys come in, saying "ahhh this is nice, i like it, looks cool, etc.," they know they gotcha. Some people get so wrapped up in new cars they could sell you a bag of dog crap for 5K and you would think it is the best thing since sex. You have to be careful w/ car dealers, they may act like your buddy when you are talking to them, but they work for the almighty dollar just like you and I.

Nah, I don't think you got screwed, like I said we all paid pretty much the same. Maybe a few hundred one way or the other, I still feel, as long as no one paid over 20k for it, they did ok. Plus, for the price, we got a much better car than a Civic will ever be.

02-07-2002, 10:35 AM

Guy, ref the warranty issue that concerned me because I am in the military and end up on each side of the border every few years...So I contacted both Mazda USA and Canadian MOT...the info about the warranty being void is incorrect (I did'nt ask about the state of CA)..I bought my P5 here in the states...it is reg'd here and I have has warranty work done in Canada on it...Another guy at work bought his Protege ES in Winnipeg and it is reg'd here in Oklahoma...he has had his serviced under warranty on both sides of the border...daytime running lights is the only thing that a US model needs to be taken to Canada...as for a Canadian model all you need to import it and reg'd it in the US is the custom form signed and a letter from mazda Canada stating it meets US DOT and EPA which they all do. Scared me for a while there, thought I might have to get rid of my P5..
