Corey (MemphisRacer) and I went out yesterday to put these Videos together. And; needless to say; we had a really great time! We actually shot these with my Olympus C3000ZOOM Digital Camera (ZOOM - go figure!!) We hope everyone likes them. They convey, pretty well, what the 'HSM Axle-back Exhaust' sounds like. Enjoy!!! 2 Black Mica MAZDASPEEDS lightly rumbling through Oakland was sweet on a Lazy Saturday afternoon. :D (rockon)

What is the HSM Axle-Back Exhaust....?

High-Strung Motorsports has now completed its first of many projects to come for the MSP. It is an Axle-back Replacement Pipe for the 2003-2003.5 and up Mazdaspeed Protege!!! This piece replaces the factory racing beat muffler with our BOLT UP axle-back assembly and is also considerably lighter at 6.2lbs (6 times lighter than stock!!!). It is very simple to install and no pipe ships out unless it has been installed, on a MSP in the shop to check for alignment and position. It sounds mean as hell and looks excellent! I selected a rolled, slash cut tip that looks VERY aggressive because let's face it, if it sounds the part, it's gotta look the part! It is a one piece assembly and can be installed in under 30 minutes using only a wrench to uninstall the factory muffler and to install our axle back assembly. The cost is $100.00+shipping. E-mail me with your address for shipping details or if you have any other questions at MemphisRacer@yahoo.com.

EDIT:
Payment for this part can be made with PayPal (quickest and easiest), cashier's check, or money order and orders will ship within 7-10 business days (due to the volume of sales.) If paying with Cashier's checks and money orders, please e-mail me for instructions. Thank you very much to everybody that has purchased one or is considering the purchase of one of these awsome axle-backs and we are all anxiosly awaiting your feedback!!!!!

Those vids were pretty badass. I like the sound of the exhaust. Does the exhaust increase performance at all? or is it just for sound? Also does it effect emmisions at all? I feel like getting me one of those! :p

Glad you like it! Perhaps some decrease in backpressure (not sure). Emissions should not be affected at all, since the Cats aren't touched. Just a fantastic sound!

Those turned out great!!!

BakaFoo- The axle-back system reduces backpressure slightly and it in no way affects emmisions. This is a mod that you can install in about 15 minutes!!! It's simple and if you ever decide to re-install your stock system (I doubt you will once you hear it!), it is just as easy and fast to do. E-mail me at MemphisRacer@yahoo.com if you have any more questions and hopefully we can do business with you soon!

I tried running around today with the cat-back simply removed. It sounds pretty good, a lot like the SRT-4 without the popping during deceleration, but the dominant sound under acceleration was the TURBO!!! The hiss at the exhaust end from the turbine was louder than everything else...

I wouldn't want that setup for long drives, the drone would be very tiring, but ti would be fine for a locally driven car.

Word to the wise, though: DON'T just remove the muffler and leave it at that: the way that the pipe turns up right at the flange means that the exhaust is driven straight up into the body of the car. I kept a careful eye on that area for the half mile or so I had my exhaust off, but it would have a BAD effect on the underbody over time....

Useless for hearing the sound of the exhaust. Try recording using a real microphone and encode with a proper audio codec.

this system is pleasant. It lets you know it's there, but not over powering. Everyone has in their own mind, how loud they would like their car to be. The MAZDASPEED with the HSM Axle-Back Exhaust, in my opinion, is just right.

Dude! I drove my car like that around the block before installing the hsm axle-back system and the two sounds are completely different. When the midpipe is just unbolted, all sound is directed upwards to the interior of the car. The result of that isnt just a very loud exhaust note inside, but also, you can cause alot of stress on the rest of the exhaust system by just letting it hang there. With our bolt on system, the interior resonance is minimal. The most you hear out of the system is a deep, mellow tone around 2000-2300 and from there on you hear a fierce, deep growl out of the exhaust when the turbo spools and from there to redline on the outside it sounds like an F16 taking off from an aircraft carrier and on the inside it is still very little interior resonance.

Ok the outtie at the end was cool. Almost has a certain Three Stooge-esque quality to it. You've got Larry and curly all you need is a Moe. Jecky you're a perfect Moe.

I can't argue about the sound directing up into the body, but I can refute the stress comment. Zip ties are a wonderful thing ;) I had that baby strapped down but good!!!

I agree with Rowan: The vids posted don't do the system any justice at all. Can you guys set it up with a better mike? I don't theink we really need vids to make a decision, but better sound would be VERY valuable...

You guys drive like there's no tommorrow....
well done...

exhuast note is slightly on the raspy side. To each their own...but it's not my cup of tea. I was expecting a nice deep growl...something similar to BMW's hamman exhuast.

Corey:

What diameter is the axle back pipe?
What diameter is the exhaust tip?
How is the tip attached to the pipe?
What material is the pipe? Mild steel? Aluminized steel? Stainless? (Doesn't look it, but I'll ask anyway.)
Is the pipe mandrel bent? Crush bent?
What material is the tip? Chromed steel? Polished aluminum? Stainless?
What hardware comes with it? Does an exhaust gasket come with it?

Do you have any supporting evidence for your claim that backpressure is reduced slightly? Did you know that the racing beat muffler is straight through also?

Have you registered with Antoine as an authorized vendor for this board?

Do you offer any warranty? If so, what are the terms?

If you're going to start a business, you might want to put together something that answers the above questions so you can refer future potential customers to it. It'll save you lots of typing. :D

We had sooooo much fun making those videos!!!! I assure everybody here that I dont drive like that often, it was actually the first time since I put the exhaust on, leaned it out a bit, and raised the boost that I really got on it. Traction is a thing of the past with 11psi:D To answer some of y'alls questions and comments....

Vicocola- I started at idle and went to 6500 in most of the videos. I ended up letting out of it most of the time because I either had no traction or was coming up on a sharp curve:eek:

MSP Pro- Thank you, heres the details of the HSM Axle-back System

-2.25" piping with a 3.5" diameter rolled slash-cut chrome tip

-All hardware is manufactured into the axle-back piping and everything is welded for a quick and easy installation.(rockon) This includes all hangers, flanges, and bolts. The axle-back arrives at your door ready to install; no assembly required on this piece! It also utilizes the stock exhaust flange gasket!!

Limited Edition- I assure you man that at no point in the rpm band is this exhaust raspy. I agree that no video or sound recording will give this system justice. The only thing I can say is that untill you hear it on your own car, you cannot trully appreciate what beautiful music your MSP will make.

In some test cases it has cause sexual arrousal, insomnia, and mass fuel consumption:D No, none of the amimals are on the endangered lists yet, but if I have to hard brake for another damn squirel, deer, or armidillo(ya, i didnt know we had them here either!), theres goin to be some empty forrests around these parts!!! The UN disovows all knowlege and if you are caught with it, there is a small pill ducttaped under...oh nevermind(burnout) As for the FDA, they are doing clinical trials with this axle-back as a possible replacement for Viagra; yashooa, I know this should make you happy, they are working on that minute man syndrom problem thingy:D

Here is a pic of my Olympus C3000ZOOM (3.34 megapixels) camera that we used.

http://store4.yimg.com/I/choiceonedigital_1739_3308042

I have had it about 2.5 years, and it has never let me down. I do all of my Digital photography with it. But; this is the first time it has ever been called upon to act as a movie camera. I am quite pleased with the results. I used a single 64mb SmartMedia card, and was able to shoot (6) 30 second movie clips, and still had room on the card for about 15 or so photos. (thumb) It has a wireless remote, which can be really handy, and an RCA patch cord that allows you to plug right into a TV, sit back, and watch a slide show of the photos you just took (via the remote), or watch the little movies. KICK ASS!!!

Thanks to NEED4SPEED for our video hosting!! As far as the tinny sound,,,well; that's a tiny mic on my digital camera. It's the best I have! Realtime; only deep and wonderful! I work with guys that are all about American V8 POWER, and they were impressed with the exhaust. If they thought is was 'rice'; believe me; they would tell me. Remember ; I'm 49. I HATE RICE!!!

Who's MSP is the one on the right in video #4? What is done to it? It looks like it is hauling ass in all the videos.

OK, OK, OK HERE YA GO (or "Here youse go", as they say here in Jersey...) the FIRST non-AGR#7 review of the HSM axle-back exhaust.

These results are based on a one-block midnight test drive and a 12 mile commute to work, and may not be representative but are my first impressions:

1) Installation: A complete non-event. 27 minutes from when I began opening the box the install was completely done, including ALL prep, getting the tools (14mm and 9/16" sockets, monkey wrench, "never sieze"), ramping the car, and clean-up. If you can pick your nose and not get hurt, you can do this.

- get ramps out, back MSP onto ramps
- take MSP off of ramps because they slid on the damn garage floor
- brace ramp against tractor, put rubber mat under other ramp, retry
- silicone spray both exhaust hangers, undo 2 flange bolts and slip hangers off stock exhaust, remove
- "installation is the reverse of removal", use never-sieze on the new bolts Corey supplies (thanks Corey!)
- completely clean up, including put ramps away, wash hands (never-sieze is a bear to remove), and put stock exhaust into the box that Corey sent, hide on shelf so Wife doesn't find out
- Drive around block at midnight, wake neighbors
- check clock when I return

Exhaust is louder than stock, deeper and throatier. I wouldn't say it's NON-intrusive, nor is it really ricey (too deep a sound). It has a bit of a resonance on deceleration around 2400 RPM, just happens to be one long downhill stretch that hits that RPM on my commute. Mellows out at 60MPH but is not as quiet as stock there either. No highway on my commute but I'll be on the highway later today. Sounds VERY much like a Neon SRT4, only not *quite* as loud and has NO rasp to it. Sounds GREAT when you're in the throttle (yummy!)

If you live in a quiet neighborhood or have neighbors with (ahem) good ears, this may not be for you. It's not bad, really, but it's not quiet. I'm pretty conserative, though, when it comes to "sharing" my car habit!

Performance wise I haven't put a clock to it (may do that this weekend), but it really does seem to get into the boost more quickly and certainly feels faster. I tried several times with windows up and down to remove the extra noise from my "sensation of speed" and either way it really does feel a bit faster, more responsive (not night and day, but there if you're attuned to your car). Did I say it sounded great when you hop on it? Well, I'll say it again.

Workmanship: Looks good to my admittedly untrained eye. The tip looks EXACTLY like stock once installed (which is good - the stock tip looks great). The brackets are welded to the pipe itself and those welds look good. The chromed, rolled, slash cut tip is welded to the pipe with a decent sturdy bead - some spatter, but it's not visible from outside the car so who cares? The pipe is not mandrel bent, but the bends are fairly gradual so I expect minimal flow disruption. Pipe fit on the car perfectly, no modifications needed at all, and it even cleared my now-famous Hidden hitch trailer (bicycle rack, really) hitch. The pipes are aluminized steel - which will (given salty roads, etc) eventually rot out - but I'm putting the stocker on for winter so this is not a concern for me. I may remove the exhaust and high-temp-black paint it to help rotproof the thing.

Too early to tell on my long-term view. I'll probably keep it and reinstall the stocker if I need to visit someone on business or go to a job interview or something. If I tire of it, it's 27 minutes (can probably get it to 15 if I'm careful) to revert to stock. The HSM exhaust is good, makes better performance, and sounds good - a little louder than I'd think appropriate for taking a client out to lunch, but OK for taking a colleague on a spin! My wife hasnp't heard it yet and her opinion will count as well, so stay "tuned"!

ON a scale of 1-10 (10 being good), I give HSM:

Service/communication: 10 (nice job, Corey!)
Fit and Ease of installation: 10 (couldn't be easier or better)
Construction: 8 (would be a 10 if: cleaner tip weld, mandrel bent tubing)
Materials: 7-8 (would be 10 if stainless tubing, hardware - but that'd be costlier too)
Performance (dynamic): 8-9
Performance (sonic): 6-7 (hear ya) (this WILL vary by ear - many of the younger set or boy-racer crowd would give this a 10 or even complain it's not aggressive ENOUGH! I'm 41 and a father of 2 middle-schoolers - my ears are attuned to a different set of frequencies than most!)
VALUE: 10++ Corey's really put a quality piece together here for very little jing. WELL DONE!

Summary: 9 Highly recommended if you don't mind it being a little louder than stock

I'm posting this in a separate thread since this one's getting long - perhaps others would want to share their experiences as well.

THANKS COREY! GREAT MOD! (me likey!)(yippy)(2thumbs)
