Just wondering. When I had mine out for the test run, I never measured the holes. I'm going up today, taking the measuring tape with me. I'm only going to go as small as I absolutely have to.

gotta talk to dealer, find out $$$$. How much for trade in on the mp3 etc. I was hoping to have it sold by now, so that's the only hold up. Was supposed to go up Friday, but had to work.

They have to fix the stereo, and coolant leak as well before I take it as well. As far as I am concerned, they can take my z828 from the mp3 and stick it in the MSP. it's 10 times better anyways. So is the sub....then again, so are the rear speakers.

Its just a front lip, the old fogs will fit if you remove the lip.

maybe those hella fogs with the angel eyes built in might work. they are a little smaller than the stock mp3/p5/msp fogs. just a thought.

bump

anyone seen the hella angel eye ones? They are 4". So, if the protege stock fogs are too big, there are indeed just a little smaller.

But, do they look good? Are they bright? Do the look ricey?

I'd like to see some pics of 2003.5 fogs if anyone has them. I'm deciding on what to do. I replaced my headlights with the Silverstars last night (def brighter), now comes the fogs!

If u will notice the shooter is not shooting tractor-trailer's , I'm not that crazy (YET !) Not that would ever do something like that ! But you f-ckers do piss me off big time ! ! ! There is no reason for you to us them ! On a regular highway ! or street !

Ok...Can you please use a less aggressive language...We're all adults here. Fog lights aren't suppose to blind the incoming driver. If it is then the install is not correct. What you're probably complaining about are those car with HIDs.

Those four-legged animals that have hooves and white tails and grow antlers are called DEER. D-E-E-R. A 'dear' is an affectionate nickname for someone you care about, or the first word many people use when writing a letter.

And fog lights, when driving in dark strips of 'out in the middle of nowhere' roads where there is no street lighting, increase visibility. And by increasing visibility -- gasp, you can see the DEER earlier!

And if you hate fogs so much .. close your eyes when you see a car with them coming. You CAN drive with your eyes closed, y'know. Duh.

The biggest problem with dear - oops deer - is not being able to see them. They like to run out in front of my (usually every night)! If they only made some kind of lights that could help? Anyone have any ideas? Maybe we can tape two flashlights to the front end of our cars? Wait a minute... don't they already...?

Maybe suggest turning them off when passing traffic or driving behind someone. Don't really need them on then anyway. Did you ever think that maybe foglights can be helpful? Maybe they can also prevent accidents by allowing people to see farther up the road than just having headlights.

I hope you aren't one of those truckers who passes cars on the double yellow even when they are doing the speed limit. That shit pisses me off and I have seen it a lot on my drive to work whatever. I'm ranting, threadjacking and way off topic.

12-11-2003, 03:14 PM
ok guys,

you all are missing the point. Fog lights look cool that is the only reason anyone uses them. They don't do shit for visibility, if anything they make the road surface to brighter to about 10 feet. thats all!

CinTurbo
12-11-2003, 03:27 PM
I'm just going to speak for everyone and say - YOU'RE WRONG! Ummm...

When you turn the fog lights on and things in front of you become more visible (how much depends on the bulb).

ummm.. that's what they're supposed to do.

ummm... I see more! They work! Everyone is happy!

Look out for that deer, dear!

Stay off the crack!

jfuller
12-11-2003, 03:34 PM
fog lights usually do what they are supposed to do. the make the surface of the road directly in front of your car brighter so that you can see through the fog, what is on the ground. They won't help you seed a deer 25 yards down the road.
ps. Im not trying to start a fight here, I am just stating fact

Newf
12-11-2003, 03:56 PM
I use them to see bumps and potholes at night mostly. I also live in a area where we have more people die because of hitting moose then just about anywhere else in Canada.

That being said, when my life is on the line, any light I can use...the better. Fogs do not project light very far. However, a lot of moose accidents are when they jump out in front of you from the side of the road....not when their 150 feet down the road in front of you. I used to drive truck ( on the island only) and I can't tell you how many moose/caribou and whatever else I've seen, and most of the time it's on my right hand side as they get startled when you come past them.

Most truck drivers here have enough lights on them to light up a city....and it's NOT for looks, it is for moose. They have lights up on the roof, and down by their bumpers.

Stock P5 lights when aimed right do produce a bit of light out towards the sides of the car. It ain't much, and I have had so many better fogs before, but it might be enough for the light to catch the eyes of an animal in time to make you turn away from it. I know this, because it's happened. And now that I don't have fogs ( had a mp3 remember), there is a difference of the amount of light on the side of the car, and of course directly in front on the ground.

Now, lets not turn this into yet ANOTHER bullshit thread. Where are all these people coming from anyways that just yell and bitch all the time. People are entitiled to their opinions, just do it in a civil manor please

Back on topic, there is only one car here I know of with the 2003.5 lip and fogs. it's a P5, and the fogs are nothing like the stock ones, they are the little blue pencil ones you can get at any autoshop. Not quite what I'm looking for. But to be honest, I haven't tried very hard at looking for fogs for months as I have really grown to like the looks of the front of the car without them. I do miss that extra bit of light though.

CinTurbo
12-11-2003, 03:58 PM
That is true - they won't help with things that are far away. But I see deer every night and most of the time they are along side the road at a fairly close distance waiting to jump out.

To me, any kind of light helps. I used to own a Mustang and I would always drive home with the fogs on b/c of the noticeable difference.

You are also right about the fog. I pretty much live in a river valley where there is a lot of fog. It'gets so bad that you can bairly see 10ft in front of your car. That's when fogs will absolutely help out.

Gbourdon
12-11-2003, 04:03 PM
Okay so how about driving lights?

fog tends to hover about 12 to 18 inches off the ground. So by projecting light in that fog-free pocket, you can illuminate the road a greater distance from your car and therefore see farther ahead. Some people swear by fog lights. Others claim that they don't really make much difference. (Stolen from click and clack)

The only reason I wouldn't want those in there is because they always look like a bolt on. Which they are of course but I guess it really depends on the install. If you could put them behind a grill or something then i think it would be pretty slick but the grill would be in the way so it would be pointless.

the wiring looks VERY VERY easy, I did all of the wiring in about 10 min. The only semi difficult part was making the hole for the switch to go in. For this I dremel'd out a small hole (square) in one of the empty slots on in the dimmer switch pannel (you can pop off the little panels individually by taking a small screwdriver (i used one out of an eyeglasses kit) and putting it on the side and working it out.

Other than that the wiring was very easy, everything was crimped already and it was just plug and play. As far as power, you just need to wire it to the positive battery terminal. It has a relay and a fuse built in to deal with the increased power.

As far as mounting... It is going to be a bitch, but it will fit and look nice. I mocked it up last night. I am just going to need to make a custom bracket. Or pick one up at a hardware store. I haven't decided which one I will go with yet, anyone have any suggestions as to what to do? there is one hole that I can see through the hole, I can mount it to that but im not sure how well it will support the light.

At a last resort I can just mount it to the top of the hole. However it will stick out a bit to far for my taste. I was wanting it to sit back in the hole a bit more.

One thing to be noted. If you pop out that black mesh. You can see, if you look closely. The holes and whatnot to hole the above mentioned mesh piece in. You can still see it slightly (if you are within 2 feet) with the light in place. The light will not completely cover it. However moving back a bit you cannot see it anymore.

I any case, I will post tomorrow letting you know how I attacked the above problems. Will let you know.

SirJaime - ur right, this is a free country and we are allowed to say watever we want...but this mazda forum is like a community and we respect each other's views and opinions. some ppl might like cars with foglights and others don't, who are you to say which is right?

And technically, ppl who have foglights DO NOT blind other drivers. The lights your talking about are called HID. They have NOTHING to do w/foglights. So here's a heads up for you: the next time you plan on opening your ass, make sure you know what ur talking about or you'll just look like a fool!!!

Also, i think you need some serious help or at least cut-down on watever your on!!!!!! peace

not that you can really see without getting really close. I took the black plastic grating that used to be there and cut it so that the bracket and foglight fit into it. So it looks a ll nice instead of the open area all around it.

oh ok..

but if u completely removed that little grill, would the fogs sit further back?

tbl

no, it was because they couldn't sit further back that i added the grill =)

haha, deer are easy (from what i hear), they stand in the road!!, kangaroos will jump out in front of your car, i mounted some driving lights on mine to cope with the damn things, so i geta good head up, and the drivers also light up a patch like fogs, and to the sides... they are the best things ever!!

here its illegal to drive with them on anyway, but everyone does.....

those rounds look good in there, how about mounting it to the side of the hole???

I don't think they look too bad - but does anyone know if we could use a smaller fog that will at least sit flush or even sit back a little? Maybe something other than Angel Eyes? Maybe something even a little smaller?

Nice work tbl! Thanks for the pics!

well i dont think fog lights would blind you, simply because their range is outwards and not straight forward like your head lights...

did u have to remove the lip first?

how tough was it? i don't wanna have to go to a shop and pay for installation

tbl

if i were to do it again it would only take me like 30 min. You don't need to remove anything. All I did was attach the bracket to the top of the hole (as far back as it could go. Wiring is cake you can funnel the wires down the hole where the injen cai goes. The hardest part of the install (after i figured stuff out) was getting the 3 wires for the switch through the grommit in the firewall. If you have any other questions post them here or drop me an email and i will do my best to answer

have a sense of humor =D

i might get around too it, but i lack a digital camera to take pictures step by step. and i lack time to describe everything! its quite simple if you just give it a shot it should be no problem.

hey where did you put your trigger wires? also where did you locate the relay? i was gonna put mine in the relay box, but ran out of wire (remember i have to cross sides....)

tbl

i bundeled up in between the cai and the headlights. Just some electrical tape. i don't know what trigger wires are! if you mean the switch, i put it next to the dimmer switch using one of the blanks (i cut out a box for the switch that came with the angel eyes).

oops, i should of said, what did you run your trigger wire (switching) off?

did you have the fog lamp wires behind that dimmer switch???????

Doesn't look bad at all, but this is not how I would be doing it. That grill would be coming out, and the light would be sitting back another 2-3 inches at least. Was the bracket the reason why you didn't put it back further? Looks like the lense would have no troubles sitting back further in the pics . But that bracket is all wrong four our purposes. We need something that mounts from behind like the stock ones. You should not be able to see the bracket at all.

Oh I agree, I spent about 8 hours trying to fabricate a bracket that would mount it further back. It is not really possible (at least with my skill). I would of mounted it back there if I could. The problem is that the OEM holes on the 03 bumper aren't quite in the Line of Sight of the vent hole. The vent hole is VERY small. Like 3x3inches. The back end of these foglights barely fit into the hole at all.

There was a switch that came with the kit. you can see it in this picture.
http://www.obstinate.org/msp/images/DSC00018.JPG

I ran the wires through the gromit in the firewall and put them up through next to the dimmer switch, cut a square hole for the switch to go in. and plugged them in.

P.S. I have made some temporary "mock" brackets and yes, I have been able to get the angel eyes 2.25" further back with them.

Whoa elite, let us know how it goes.
