Hwy 9 Fun Run!

S/Cp5someday and I have been talking about meeting up at the Summit of HWY 9 monday(Memorial Day) or wednesday. I know it's short notice, but we ain't planning anything special, just gonna hang out a bit, then go for a "brisk" drive down HWY 9. Maybe into Santa Cruz, maybe into Saratoga...hell, maybe both!

Anyway, if you're not too busy, and you're interested in hanging out with some fellow forum members/Protege junkies, Let's figure out a good time to meet!

SUMMIT OF HWY 9
From Saratoga, follow HWY 9 south all the way to where it intersects with SKYLINE BLVD and HYW 35. It's a four way stop at the summit of the hill. Look for the big (well, medium-sized)parking lot.
From Santa cruz, do the same except go north!;)

Yeah, Let's stick with HWY 9 for now. I'm not really sure what dates/times would be good for everybody, but as for me, my schedule's gonna be open for awhile. So anytime's good for me, I just need a day or two's advanced notice.
I might go up there for a little "recon mission" tomorrow and make sure that caltrans didn't tear up the parking lot or something. Maybe throw the stick for my dog a few times...I haven't been up there for a couple of months, and it's been beautiful out.

So, I went up there to check things out today and what a surprise! I saw a bunch of Miatas, RX-7s, Boxters, even a 600sl.
It's pretty cool how car-people are, the whole caravan pulled right up to me and parked. Most guys were just there to hang out, but some were part of a car-club. One of the guys said he had a P5 and I told him about this club, and about wednesday. He actually seemed pretty interested! :) This place is pretty popular with car/bike enthusiasts. There had to be 60 people there, most on rice-rockets but a lot of import cars, too. Heck, one lady even had a hot-dog stand set up there!
What I'm getting at is that this is a great place to meet! The parking lot is plenty big, and the surroundings are beautiful, as always around here. Let's Do This!

6 is a good time to meet. It won't be so hot out and hopefully, the circus will have left by then. I had a fun drive home, carving corners all the way to Santa Cruz. The traffic wasn't that bad, actually.

Today it took about 45 min. But the roads were pretty congested. I'm not sure about the milage, Ill check on wed. Such a fun drive, I never saw a cop at all on my way home, except for the wreck I saw. Some guy in a Geo(?) rolled his car onto the roof. He was OK but his car was SMASHED.

I will not be able to make the meet tonight, as I will probably be pulling a 11-12 hour day here at work. :( Sorry, guys. I would love to join ya, but it's just not possible.

It was great to have a little crew of people up there! It also worked out pretty well, I think, going up there in the late afternoon. When s/cp5 and I met up there on monday, we got there at 1 and it was too f-ing hot! This time it was a little cooler and the parking lot was a lot less crowded.
What a cool bunch of guys! Wheelguru tired out my dog playing with her. When we got home, she came in the door, emptied her dish, and CRASHED! Thanks, bro. Now she won't be bugging me to take her for a walk later! :D
Boy, some of those cars(Peter, Rishie, and Sean's mostly) are just hooked-up. It's inspiring to see how nice these little car's have the potential to be.
The only thing that I was a tiny bummed about is that we never went for a Fun-Run. Let's do it again, but drive this time! Maybe we could meet in Saratoga somewhere, and then all drive up to the summit for a pit-stop(stoned), then down to Boulder Creek or somethin'.
I had a fun drive back! All the way (26 mi from the summit) down HWY 9 to Santa Cruz, no traffic!(drive)

Ok. Meet at the Summit, and drive all the way down 9 to Santa Cruz. Turn north on HWY 1.
Go right on Bonny Doon Road, from B.D. road, we would turn right onto Smith Grade. Take Smith Grade to Empire Grade and go left(north). From Empire Grade we would turn right onto Felton Empire road. Down Felton Empire until we end up at HWY 9 in Felton. Once we're in felton, we just take a left and cruise up HWY 9 until we are back where we started.

Total time: I'm guessing 1-1/2 to 2 hours max.

1.5-2 hours sounds good. I'm not familiar with the roads, so I wanted to ask you if traffic is gonna be a problem...if we meet 2:30, say we start driving around 3, thats when bay area traffic usually starts getting bad. But if these are nice secluded roads nobody commutes with, then (2thumbs) (rockon) (thumb)

Y'know, these roads are pretty secluded, so I don't think traffic will be that much of a problem. The only traffic I see us running into would be when we drop down into Felton. HWY 9 from Felton to Boulder Creek might be a little congested. ...We can always avoid that by staying on Empire Grade until we come to Jamison Creek road. That road drops down into Big Basin, which in turn drops us into Boulder Creek, so we would avoid most of the SLV traffic.

There are some kick ass roads down here in the south bay..I am going to try to org a meet down here in addition to all the sweet stuff going on in scruz.

I got a kick ass loop Hicks road --> Old almaden--> Harry--> Hwy 152 --> Llagas road --> Hicks This goes all over the south hills (where we had that huge ass fire last year)

Sorry, I'm not too good at directions :) Let me try again...

Take 17 S. towards Santa Cruz. Take 85 N. towards Mountain View. Exit Saratoga Avenue, go left at signal onto Saratoga Ave. Follow Saratoga Ave all the way through the Village of Saratoga. Saratoga Ave turns into Big Basin Way & Hwy 9. Continue up the same road until you come to the intersection of HWY 9 and Skyline Blvd. Its a four-way stop at the top of the hill. There is a parking lot to your left as you get to the stop sign.

Now I've probably REALLY confused you. It's really pretty simple:
--Take Hwy 85
--exit at Saratoga Ave.
--South on Saratoga Ave
--Straight on Big Basin Way (Hwy 9) in Saratoga
--Left on Skyline Blvd at top of hill
--Left into parking lot.

So my friend who has a company minivan (2000 Ford Windstar) beat me in a friendly stoplight race tonight. (I had a friend in the car but he isn't a big guy).

I want a stick so bad, buying the slushbox was the dumbest thing I ever did. Too bad my only experience with a manual before having this car was with a crappy pickup truck, I have since driven a 2003.5 mazdaspeed and regret my purchase decision evey day. It was so much easier to drive and with the new stretch of 101 open the traffic is still bad but only half as bad as it was before. </rant>

This was a pretty fun drive! :D
Ok. Meet at the Summit, and drive all the way down 9 to Santa Cruz. Turn north on HWY 1.
Go right on Bonny Doon Road, from B.D. road, we would turn right onto Smith Grade. Take Smith Grade to Empire Grade and go left(north). From Empire Grade we would turn right onto Felton Empire road. Down Felton Empire until we end up at HWY 9 in Felton. Once we're in felton, we just take a left and cruise up HWY 9 until we are back where we started.

Total time: I'm guessing 1-1/2 to 2 hours max. :p
